March 2011 Archives

Oak Hills junior wrestler Robert Marchese, competing at the NSCA National Wrestling Championship, Junior Division, in Virginia Beach, Virginia has advanced all the way to the finals.

Marchese, who was seventh at the state meet four weeks ago, had to win five matches in the 171-pound weight class to reach Friday's final. The medal rounds for the juniors are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. PDT today.

Marchese won his first two matches of the tournament 12-3 and 11-1, then won by fall. His last two were close: 9-7 and 3-1 to advance to the final where he'll face California State champion Nikko Reyes of Fresno Clovis West. Marchese and Reyes did not meet in the state tournament.

Oak Hills freshman heavyweight Justin Gillham, competing in the Freshman division of nationals, advanced all the way to the semifinals, before losing 2-1 on Thursday. He'll be competing in consolation today before wrestling for a medal.

The Senior Division gets underway Friday, including 135-pound state champion Chris Mecate of Redlands East Valley.

Barstow names new football coach

Barstow recently hired its next football coach, as Victor Valley assistant coach John Marquez was named to replace Jose Rubio, who coached the Aztecs the last three seasons.

Rubio, who resigned after this past season to spend time with family, was highly successful during his first two years at Barstow, leading the Aztecs to a 17-8 overall record and two playoff appearances, including a run to the CIF-SS Eastern Division championship game in 2008. But Barstow struggled last year, only going 1-9 with a young team.

San G baseball on Florida vacation

The San Gorgonio baseball team is spending its spring break in sunny, though sometimes rainy, Florida, as the Spartans are competing in the Orlando Invitational. With the Inland Empire Classic tabeled this year, the Spartans raised money through fireworks booths, program sales and even proceeds from the County Clash.

The trip harkens back to trips San G used to make in the past, as the Spartans used to travel to Las Vegas for baseball tournaments before working with the IE Classic.

"I think (San G coach) Bill (Eatinger) has a job as a travel broker when he retires from coaching," San G athletic director Matt Maeda said. "He's done such a great job managing money and getting the most out of this trip and the kids are really appreciative of it."

Along with playing some of the premier high school baseball teams in the United States, the Spartans have gone to Disney World and dealt with chaotic Florida weather, as tornado warnings and thunderstorms have made their Florida vacation an adventure at times.

"It's been crazy out here with the tornado warnings and power going out," Maeda said. "We are definitely getting quite an experience from being out here."

Heartbreaker for the SkyHawks

Dorian Cason's inbounds pass with 18.7 seconds left went over Montigo Alford's head, resulting in the final two points of Mitty's 53-50 victory over the SkyHawks. Alford saved the pass, which came from midcourt along the sidelines, under his basket but threw it into the arms of White, who laid it in to give the Lions a 53-50 lead.

Alford dribbled the ball up the court but was off on a contested 3-pointer, leaving Summit just short of a state championship. Both players played their hearts out, with Cason scoring 15 of his game-high 19 points in the second half and pulling down 10 rebounds. He held his own against Mitty sophomore Aaron Gordon, who finished with 17 points and 21 rebounds after having 13 and 12, respectively, in the first half. Alford finished with 14 points for Summit.

Brandon White hit 1 of 2 free throws for the Lions to give them the lead after Summit scored four straight points to tie it. Dorian Cason drained two free throws with 1:15 left and found Quinton Lilley for the tying basket with 22.7 seconds left before White was fouled by Montigo Alford.

50-46 Mitty, 2:19 left

Summit hasn't been able to push past the Lions and they are running out of time to do so, as the SkyHawks have yet to hit a 3-pointer. Dorian Cason is keeping Summit afloat at the free-throw line, hitting seven of eight foul shots in the fourth quarter.

48-43 Mitty, 3:57 left

The Lions have opened up a five-point lead thanks to the efforts of Brett Younger, who hit two crucial baskets for Archbishop Mitty. However, Aaron Gordon has picked up his fourth foul and is on the bench, so perhaps this is the time for Summit to strike.

The SkyHawks' senior leaders are doing their thing, with Montigo Alford and Dorian Cason scoring 14 points each thus far.

39-36 Mitty through 3

A 3-pointer by Neil Vranicar with 45 seconds left in the third quarter gave Archbishop Mitty the 3-point lead going into the final quarter. Summit tied the game three times in the third period but hasn't been able to take the lead. Montigo Alford has 11 points and four assists to lead the SkyHawks while Dorian Cason has 10 points and eight rebounds.

Aaron Gordon has 17 points and 17 rebounds for Mitty.

Summit has come out firing in the second half, outscoring Mitty 15-8 to tie the game 34-34 with 3:07 left in the third. Montigo Alford has six of his 11 points in the third quarter, also assisting on a dunk by Dorian Cason. Cason now has eight points for the SkyHawks.

The story for Mitty continues to be Aaron Gordon, who has 17 points and 15 rebounds thus far.

Summit within one

The SkyHawks have scored six points in the first 1:18 of the third quarter, moving within 26-25. Montigo Alford, Darrick Arnold and Devon Alexander have each scored, with Alexander making an acrobatic layup to force a 30-second timeout from Mitty.

26-19 Mitty at the half

Sophomore Aaron Gordon has been dominant for the Lions, scoring 11 of his 13 points in the second quarter and pulling down 12 rebounds, allowing Mitty to establish a little cushion. Summit has struggled from the field, only shooting 28.6 percent in the first half. Montigo Alford has five points to lead the SkyHawks, with Darrick Arnold, Dorian Cason and Cameron Lewis adding four points each. Cason also has six rebounds, but Summit was beaten 25-16 on the boards in the first half.

19-14 Mitty, 3:30 left in 2nd

Mitty super sophomore Aaron Gordon has started to get untracked, scoring six points in the second quarter to open up a five-point lead. He did get overexuberant after a dunk with 5:38 left, getting called for a technical foul for slapping the backboard. He has eight points to lead the Lions, while Darrick Arnold's four points leads Summit.

Tied through one

Summit and Mitty go into the second quarter tied 9-9. It's been a game of runs so far, as Summit scored the first seven points over the first 4:02 with Mitty responding with nine points in a row after that. Devon Alexander tied the game with the SkyHawks with a jumper with 14 seconds left and Cameron Lewis blocked a Mitty shot as time expired.

7-2 Summit, 3:23 left in first

The SkyHawks' D came out playing hard, holding Archbishop Mitty without a point for the first 4:26 of the game. Darrick Arnold scored Summit's first four points, with Dorian Cason adding the next three along with four rebounds. Point guard Montigo Alford has also been active early.

Summit about to tip

Doing the introductions right now. Matchup to watch is Summit's 6-foot-8 center Dorian Cason against Mitty's 6-7 sophomore forward Aaron Gordon. Should be fun.

St. Mary's wins state championship

Rialto's dream season fell one game short, as Stockton St. Mary's full-court man-pressure was too much in a 64-48 victory. Rialto was turned over 33 times by the Rams, who held star Knights point guard Janae Sharpe to eight points.

Brittani Walker led Rialto with 17 points and 10 rebounds while Denae Williams added 13 points, but it wasn't enough against a seasoned St. Mary's squad that saw four players score in double figures. Courtney Range led the way for the Rams with 17 points.

53-40 St. Mary's through 3

If Rialto has a run in it, now is the time to unleash it, as St. Mary's continues to lengthen its lead. Turnovers have been the main issue for the Knights, who have now committed 28. Brittani Walker continues to lead the way for Rialto, scoring 15 points and pulling down eight rebounds. Courtney Range has 15 for the Rams while Ali Gibson has 12.

46-34 St. Mary's, 3:11 left in 3rd

Rialto is in a dangerous spot right now, as the Rams have used seven points from Oregon State-bound forward Ali Gibson in the third period to move out to a double-digit lead. Gibson now has 12 points for St. Mary's, which has forced 24 Rialto turnovers.

Denae Williams has not played in the second half thus far due to her three fouls. Brittani Walker is continuing to play well for Rialto, as she now has a game-high 13 points along with seven rebounds.

St. Mary's up 32-27 at half

Kendall Kenyon hit a putback as time expired, giving the Rams a five-point halftime lead. Rialto scrapped to a 27-2 tie with 1:33 left on a basket by Bianca Brown, who scored five points off the bench in the second quarter, but St. Mary's ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take the lead.

Janae Sharpe got on the board with a 3-pointer late in the second quarter, but Rialto has been led by Denae Williams' 10 points and six rebounds and Brittani Walker's nine points, five rebounds and two assists. Williams has three fouls, something that could come back to haunt the Knights.

Courtney Range has eight point and five rebounds for St. Mary's, which forced 18 Rialto turnovers in the first half.

24-19 St. Mary's, 3:30 left in 2nd

Denae Williams is continuing to produce for Rialto, as she now has 10 points and six rebounds for the Knights. However, she just picked up her third foul on a questionable call, leaving Rialto in peril for the rest of the half.

St. Mary's has been up by as many as seven points thus far and has forced 15 Knight turnovers. Janae Sharpe remains scoreless for the Knights, but Brittani Walker has picked up some of the slack with seven points and four rebounds.

St. Mary's up 11-10 after 1

Despite committing 10 first-quarter turnovers, Rialto led for the majority of the first quarter before Courtney Range put the Rams up with seconds left in the first. Denae Williams has six points and five rebounds for the Knights, but picked up her second foul with 1:05 left in the first period. Brittani Walker has four points and four rebounds as well for the Knights.

Rialto up 8-7, 3:01 left in 1st

Denae Williams has come out firing for the Knights, scoring six of the team's eight points and adding four rebounds. The St. Mary's full-court pressure is causing Rialto problems though, as the Knights have five turnovers thus far.

Carter had a couple of underclassmen wrestlers excel in tournaments earlier this month, as sophomore heavyweight Kenny Clark won the state title as the state Frosh/Soph competition in Fresno March 12 while 106-pound junior Carlos Navarro won the state title at the junior tournament that same weekend in Lemoore.

Clark, who finished fifth at CIF and won a match at Masters, ripped through the field in the state's most prestigious tournaments for underclassmen.

Summit trailed by 10 points after a quarter, nine at halftime, and was still down eight after three quarters, but outscored top-seeded San Diego LIncoln 26-13 in the fourth quarter for a 72-67 victory in the Division II Regional Final at the Galen Center.
It was a 14-1 run to start the fourth that gave Summit a five point lead. Lincoln, the defending state champion, never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
Montigo Alford outscored Lincoln 9-1 by himself at one point during that run.
It is the first trip to the state finals for Summit, which will play on Friday at 8 p.m. in Sacramento.

Summit, behind nine straight fourth-quarter points by Montigo Alford, holds a 64-62 lead over top-seeded San Diego LIncoln with 2:16 to go

Summit down 9 at the half

Lincoln started off fast against Summit in the Division II boys basketball regional final, taking a 22-12 lead after a quarter.
But the SkyHawks got their legs in the second, and trimmed the lead ever so slightly, trailing 37-28 at halftime. Darrick Arnold leads Summit with six points, while Doran Cason has seven rebounds.
Lincoln's UCLA-bound guard Norman Powell has a game-high 10 points at the half.

For the second time in as many meetings with Buena, Janae Sharpe made a buzzer-beater to give RIalto the victory. This time, Rialto's 44-42 win vaulted the Knights into the Division II state championship game.
Sharpe's basket with 8.5 seconds to go tied the score 42-42. Then Denae Williams took a charge with 2.8 seconds to go. Sharpe then caught a long inbounds pass and hit a runner from the free throw line as time expired.
Rialto is headed to the state finals for the first time in school history. They will play on Friday at 6 p.m. at Arco Arena in Sacramento

After the offensive doldrums of the second quarter, both teams shot better in the third.
Buena went on an 11-4 run to take the lead for the first time since the first quarter.
Now, after three quarters, Buena leads Rialto 33-32.
Could we be in for another great finish?

Each team scored only four points in the second quarter, but Rialto leads Ventura Buena 18-15 at halftime of the Southern California Division III championship at the Galen Center.

Rialto led 14-11 after a quarter, then held Buena to a single free throw until a 3-pointer in the final minute cut the Knights' lead to 18-15.

Here are some ugly second quarter numbers: Buena 1-10 from the field, 1-4 from the line. RIalto 2-17 from the field, 0-0 from the line.
Overall, Rialto is shooting 23 percent from the field at the half, while Buena is at 26.

But the bottom line is, Rialto is leading, 16 minutes away from a berth in its first state championship game.

Ashley Simmons, who would've been one of the pitchers used by Cajon softball coach Jerry Tivey this season, now won't be. That's because Simmons has transferred to San Gorgonio.

Simmons was with Cajon just before the season started but has since transferred to San Gorgonio. Her transfer was approved by the CIF-Southern Section on Friday. She has not yet played varsity softball and I believe she is a senior.

Interestingly enough, Cajon opens league play on Tuesday -- you guessed it -- at home against San Gorgonio.

Cajon, meanwhile, finished play in the Hemet Tournament on Friday night, beating Palm Desert 19-8 in four innings to capture seventh place. Although she didn't pitch her best, Sharon Estrada had a record-breaking day at the plate. Estrada went 4-for-4 with two home runs and a school-record nine RBIs to lead the Cowgirls.

The problems that were highlighted by Referendum E at the Fontana Unified School District's School Board meeting last Tuesday aren't restricted to Southern California apparently, as Duval County in Florida is seriously considering taking that approach to combat a $97 million deficit.

Duval County isn't exactly a small county as far as population, as it encompasses the city of Jacksonville and has produced hundreds of Division I athletes over the years. Needless to say, the uproar is huge, as evidenced by this blog entry at jacksonville.com. Another take on the situation can be read here. It will be interesting to see if Duval County will do what the FUSD thankfully reconsidered doing.

The junior center had 17 of her game-high 25 points in the second half and added 19 rebounds as Rialto pulled away from North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake 76-60 in a CIF State Division II Southern Regional semifinal at Rialto High School.

Top-seeded Rialto (32-3) advances to the regional final on Saturday against second-seeded Ventura Buena. Rialto defeated Buena 55-53 in the CIF-SS Division 2AA championship game last week. This time, the game will be played at USC's Galen Center. Game time is 2 p.m. Saturday.

The Rialto-Buena game will be the first of back-to-back games featuring area teams.
Following that game, at 4 p.m., the Summit boys will face San Diego Lincoln in the Division II Final. Summit downed Palos Verdes Peninsula 79-74 in another regional semifinal on Saturday.
One of the other games on Saturday at Galen Center is the Division III boys final, featuring La Canada and La Verne Lutheran at noon.

Cajon girls basketball coach Mark Lehman and boys basketball coach Randy Murray are once again spearheading the annual Boys and Girls Senior All-Star Basketball Game between All-Star teams from San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The 31st Annual edition of these games will be played April 22 at 6 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) at Cajon High School and both coaches are looking for nominations for the game, which will feature a 3-point shooting contest at halftime of the girls game and a slam-dunk contest at halftime of the boys game.

Nominating coaches and athletic directors should send Lehman (girls) and Murray (boys) the following information in their nominaton -- player's name, jersey number, high school, position, email address, cell and/or home phone number, height, statistics and why they should be representing their county. This information should be e-mailed to Lehman for the girls at mark.lehman@sbcusd.com or Murray for the boys at randy.murray@sbcusd.com.

The Colton football CIF celebration will continue tomorrow at Colton High School, as the team and coaches will be presented their rings as part of a ceremony at 6:30 p.m. at the Colton High School auditorium. Should be quite the affair.

That very well could be the case tonight, as the Fontana Unified School District school board will meet in a closed-door session tonight to discuss the cutting of $8 million from the district's budget. That could include the entire athletic department, as stated in Referendum E.

"Suspension of All Athletic Programs (Ref. E).
This item is for consideration by the Board of Education to take action to suspend all Athletic Programs and eliminate the Athletic Directors ..."

I'm no economist and I won't pretend to have the slightest idea of all of the factors that presently has FUSD drowning in red tape. And I definitely am not going to advocate the resumption of athletics in FUSD sports at the expense of other extracurricular programs or teacher jobs. But it would just be an absolute shame if athletics were taken out as a response to the budget crisis.

Athletics are not only a fun extra-curricular activity, but a source of pride for the community and a diversion for the athletes from negative outside influences. They also provide a form of academic support, as an athlete has to make certain grades to be able to play athletics. It would be sad to see hundreds of students be deprived of that outlet. And it would stink as a sportswriter to miss out on the Summit football and basketball programs, the Kaiser football program, the Fontana boys soccer team, the Miller football program and see the development of Jurupa Hills cut off at the knees.

I'm not sure what is going to happen. But this could drastically change the landscape of Inland Empire and Southern California athletics permanently.

Only two county teams, the Ayala girls and Oak Hills boys, advance on to the regional tournament, which starts Tuesday and will end Saturday at Downey Warren High School. The pair of Bulldogs are looking to avenge CIF-SS championship losses, with Ayala falling to Bishop Amat in the Division 2 finals Friday and Oak Hills losing to Pico Rivera in the D4 championship Saturday. Mecate advances to finals

Redlands East Valley senior Chris Mecate is his school's first-ever state finalist in wrestling after downing Timmy Box of Bakersfield 11-5 in the 135 pound semifinals at the CIF State Championships in Bakersfield Saturday morning.

Mecate entered the tournament ranked No. 1, while Box was ranked No. 3
Mecate, who has fifth and sixth-place medals from his junior and freshman years, respectively, will face No. 2- ranked Shane Yacuta of Porterville in the championship match tonight.

A total of seven county wrestlers made it to Day 2. Mecate and Oak Hills' Ray Delgado (119) were the lone semifinalists. Delgado, ranked sixth, was pinned in his semifinal by second-ranked Daniel Gaytan of Clovis in 51 seconds. Delgado will wrestle in consolation.

Bloomington's Juan Alvarado (152) won his first match Saturday 5-1 to earn a spot in the top 8. Etiwanda's J.J. Everard (215) and Los Osos' Jon Solano (160) were eliminated Saturday morning.

Redlands East Valley senior Chris Mecate (135 pounds) and Oak Hills senior Ray Delgado (119) both advanced to the semifinals at the CIF State Championships Friday in Bakersfield.
Check back with this blog Saturday for updates on Mecate, Delgado and the other county wrestlers.
Both Mecate and Delgado secured a spot in the top six, and still have a shot at a state title.
But overall, it was a rough day for San Bernardino County wrestlers.
Of the 25 state qualfiers for the county, only seven made it to day 2.
Joining Mecate and Delgado today, but competing in consolation are: Bloomington's Juan Alvarado (152), Los Osos' Jon Solano (160), Oak Hills' Robert Marchese (171), Etiwanda's J.J. Everard (215) and Oak Hills' Gerardo Aguirre (215).
Marchese was his school's first state placer last year, and Solano is hoping to be his school's first this year. Colony, Kaiser and Chino Hills all had wrestlers at state hoping to be the first from their schools to place, but none made it to day 2.

Berich will be honored by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association for his longevity in coaching.

Redlands Adventist wins D6A title

48 hours ago, there were zero Seventh-Day Adventist schools with CIF-Southern Section titles. Now there are two, as the Redlands Adventist Academy boys team joined Mesa Grande Academy's girls team with a 61-42 victory over Los Angeles Arshag Dickranian this afternoon at Mater Dei High School.

RAA (21-7) overwhelmed Dickranian with a 15-2 run to start the fourth quarter, outscoring Arshag 21-6 in the final eight minutes. Mikael Anderson had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, including a thunderous dunk right before the end of the first half that put RAA up four points. Tino Mkorombindo had 15 points and 12 rebounds for RAA while Kamaal Thomas added 10 points.

Jack Kerepetyan had 20 points and 15 rebounds for Arshag, but all of his points came in the first half, as RAA's pesky 5-foot-10 duo of seniors Stephen Lawson and Chido Mutodo frustrated the 6-6 Kerepetyan in the second half.

With 25 wrestlers from the County competing at state, here's a look at their brackets.
