Paul named interim coach at Los Osos

Just got an e-mail from Los Osos principal Chris Hollister saying that assistant coach Jeff Paul was named the interim coach of the Grizzly baseball team, a position that he'll assume for the remainder of this season.

Paul was chosen after a meeting this morning on campus between Hollister, coaches, players and parents after the removal of Dominick Copas as head coach last week. According to a source, Copas was suspended and removed after a profane voicemail to a player left in the fall surfaced and was reported to administration.

The Los Osos baseball program received a jolt this past week, as Dominick Copas was removed as head coach, according to telephone conversations with Copas and Los Osos athletic director Tom Martinez.

"I am no longer the baseball coach," Copas said during a telephone interview Monday. "I have been instructed to not comment further on anything else, but I was removed as the baseball coach last week."

The Grizzlies (12-5 overall, 5-4 Baseline League) are currently tied for second with Alta Loma in league, two games behind first-place Glendora. He is 43-23 since taking over for Anthony Vasquez prior to the 2009 season, leading Los Osos to the playoffs in his previous two seasons.

According to a source, the nexus of Copas' removal was a profanity-laced message left on the voicemail of a Grizzly player last week. Neither Copas nor Martinez would comment on that or other allegations.

Despite the loss of his position as head baseball coach, Copas still remains employed as a Web Page and Design teacher at the high school, as position that isn't threatened by last week's action.

"This whole thing has nothing to do with my teaching or my standing as a teacher," Copas said. "That much I can comment on. My standing as a teacher remains the same as it was last week."

That stance was reiterated by Los Osos principal Chris Hollister Monday in an e-mailed statement.

"I will not discuss the details surrounding Mr. Copas' removal as our baseball coach. He has made many positive contributions to the Los Osos community and remains on our faculty as a teacher," Hollister said. "I expect that he will continue to make positive contributions in the classroom and on campus."

What is unclear is where Los Osos goes from here. According Hollister, a decision on an interim coach for the remainder of the season will be made after meetings with remaining coaches, players and their families.

Chino will be playing San Dimas in the finals of its tournament on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Chino High School, the last of four games that will be played on the final day of the tournament. Admission to each game, which will be held in three-hour intervals at 9 a.m., noon, 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., is $3.

San G baseball on Florida vacation

The San Gorgonio baseball team is spending its spring break in sunny, though sometimes rainy, Florida, as the Spartans are competing in the Orlando Invitational. With the Inland Empire Classic tabeled this year, the Spartans raised money through fireworks booths, program sales and even proceeds from the County Clash.

The trip harkens back to trips San G used to make in the past, as the Spartans used to travel to Las Vegas for baseball tournaments before working with the IE Classic.

"I think (San G coach) Bill (Eatinger) has a job as a travel broker when he retires from coaching," San G athletic director Matt Maeda said. "He's done such a great job managing money and getting the most out of this trip and the kids are really appreciative of it."

Along with playing some of the premier high school baseball teams in the United States, the Spartans have gone to Disney World and dealt with chaotic Florida weather, as tornado warnings and thunderstorms have made their Florida vacation an adventure at times.

"It's been crazy out here with the tornado warnings and power going out," Maeda said. "We are definitely getting quite an experience from being out here."

County clash set for Saturday

The 15th Annual County Clash will take place Saturday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park in San Bernardino with a baseball tripleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Arroyo Valley and Carter start the day at 1 p.m., with crosstown rivals Cajon and San Gorgonio playing at 4 p.m. and Citrus Belt League foes Fontana and Yucaipa facing off in the nightcap at 7 p.m. Tickets for the event are $4 and can either be purchased at Arrowhead Credit Union Park or at each participating school. For more information contact Sam Farber at (909) 495-7632 or at sfarber@ie66ers.com.

While football got almost all of the National Signing Day coverage Wednesday, Los Osos had two water polo players - Dominic Vicino and Matt Wong - sign letters of intent to the Air Force Academy. Wong and Vicino were key components in Los Osos' CIF championship team as sophomores in 2008, along with their CIF finalist team in 2009 and this year's team, which lost in the semifinals. Vicino was the MVP of the Southern California High School All-Star game this past season as well.

Wong (left) and Vicino (right) are pictured below along with Los Osos baseball player Cody Rogina, who signed with UC Riverside.

Damien's Kohler commits to USC

Straying over into Clay Fowler's territory a bit with this post, but Damien sophomore pitcher/outfielder Christopher Kohler verbally committed to USC yesterday according to his parents, Michelle and Richard Kohler. Kohler, who is a lefthanded pitcher and a centerfielder, gave his commitment after a visit to USC.

"Christopher has been a huge Trojan fan all of his life, so this wasn't a hard decision," Richard Kohler said. "Because of his age they can't do anything but send us mail and questionnaires. We visited there a couple of times, they offered and we accepted."

Kohler, who doesn't turn 16 until May 4, is one of the top Southern California prospects in the class of 2013, getting USC's attention during a showcase this past summer at the Dodgers' spring training complex in Glendale, Ariz. While USC was his first scholarship offer, Kohler was getting attention from almost every notable baseball school on the West Coast, most notably UCLA, UC Irvine, Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State.

Hanson, Chatwood stop by REV

The Redlands East Valley Winter Baseball Camp got a couple of high-profile alumni visitors Wednesday, as Atlanta Braves pitcher Tommy Hanson and Angels pitching prospect Tyler Chatwood dropped by the camp for a question and answer session with the 8-14 year old campers.

Hanson, a 2004 graduate, and Chatwood, who graduated in 2008, answered questions and signed autographs for the 146 campers in attendance -- a 50-person upgrade from the year before according to REV baseball coach James Cordes.

"It was a great event and the kids were thrilled to see Tommy and Tyler," Cordes said. "Any time you can get successful alumni like that to come back and help out its a great thing. I thought it was a big success."

The day camp, and the celebrity appearances, aren't over at REV. Today's installment of the two-day camp will feature former major league player and Angels broadcaster Rex Hudler. Hudler will give a speech to the campers around 11:30 a.m. today.

"The kids don't know Rex as much for being a player because he played in a different generation, but he's one of the best speakers out there," Cordes said. "I'm very interested in hearing what he has to say."

The schedule for the Coach Tony baseball tournament to be held Saturday at Redlands East Valley and Redlands High Schools has been set. The tournament is being held in remembrance of former REV freshman baseball coach Tony Hernandez, who passed away last month due to a heart attack. Hernandez has a son, Drew, who is a senior infielder on the Wildcats.

The schedule for the games at both sites is as follows. At Redlands East Valley the Wildcats will play San Gorgonio at 8 a.m., followed by a game against Chino at 10:30 a.m. Chino will then play Yucaipa at 1 p.m., with the Thunderbirds playing San Gorgonio at 6 p.m.

Redlands at Cajon will start off the RHS action at 8 a.m., with the Cowboys then playing Citrus Valley at 10:30. Redlands will play again at 1 p.m. against Rancho Cucamonga, with the Cougars playing Citrus Valley in the final game of the day at 3:30 p.m. All donations from ticket sales and concessions will go to the Coach Tony Scholarship, which REV will give out to a senior at the conclusion of every season.

The Redlands East Valley baseball program will be holding the "Coach Tony" fall baseball tournament Oct. 16 in memory of former freshman coach Tony Hernandez, who passed away Sept. 24 because of a heart attack.

Hernandez, an active Wildcats baseball supporter and the father of senior infielder Drew Hernandez, also will have a scholarship in his name given out annually in his name at Redlands East Valley every June. Proceeds from next weekend's tournament will go to that scholarship and to charity.

"It's a tough loss for the whole REV community because Tony meant so much," coach James Cordes said. "In talking with the family, they wanted a tournament honoring Coach Tony because of his love for baseball. I called and e-mailed some coaches and the response was great."

The tournament will take place at Redlands East Valley and Redlands highs and have a round-robin format, with each team getting two games. Other participating schools include San Gorgonio, Yucaipa, Chino, Cajon, Citrus Valley and Rancho Cucamonga.

The accolades continue to pour in for Barstow pitcher Aaron Sanchez and San Gorgonio infielder Adam Quintana, as both were named to the Maxpreps Medium School All-American team.

Sanchez, who was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays with the No. 34 pick in the draft, made the first team thanks to a 7-0 record on the mound with a 0.73 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 57.2 innings pitched. Sanchez also hit .403 with five home runs.

Quintana, the CIF-SS Division 3 co-MVP and the San Andreas League MVP, earned second-team honors after a monster year in which he batted .545 with four home runs and a section-best 47 RBIs. He also starred on the mound, going 11-3 with a 1.92 ERA and 114 strikeouts.

Cal Hi-Sports, through ESPN Rise, has been releasing their all-state teams this week, with several local players being honored. Here are some of the players recognized by the website.

Sanchez signs with Blue Jays

Barstow pitcher Aaron Sanchez, the 34th pick of last week's Major League Baseball draft, has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and will head off to their rookie ball team in Dunedin, Florida this upcoming weekend.

Sanchez, the first player in the county to be selected, chose not to go into details on the terms of his contract, but Jim Callis of Baseball America indicated that Sanchez is receiving a $775,000 bonus in this tweet. Either way, Sanchez is excited about embarking on his professional career.

"It's awesome," said Sanchez, who had signed with the University of Oregon. "It's made better by the fact that I'm still in school. It's kind of cool being the only kid in high school that's a professional baseball player."

Sanchez graduates from Barstow this upcoming Thursday and will head to Florida three days later. Florida may seem like a different world from the High Desert, but Sanchez is ready for the challenge.

"The humidity will be something to get used to, but its hot up here and its hot down there," Sanchez said. "I can't wait to get going."

San Gorgonio junior outfielder Andy Crowley was selected to be part of the Southern California All-Star Team for the North-South All-Star Showcase this upcoming weekend in Santa Clara according to San G coach Bill Eatinger. Crowley, an All-San Andreas League and all-CIF selection, was selected from a deep pool of candidates from around the state.

"Each school gets to submit a couple underclassmen and of those, only 24 are picked," Eatinger said. "It's quite an honor."

Redlands East Valley pitcher Griffin Murphy, the 61st pick in this week's Major League Baseball draft, has agreed in principle to a contract with the Toronto Blue Jays. The second-round pick said that he agreed to a signing bonus worth $800,000, which is the value that he was looking for prior to the draft.

"I'm really excited right now," said Murphy, who will forgo a scholarship to the University of San Diego to sign. "This is a dream come true and I can't believe that I'm about to play professional baseball. They came up from the number that the pick was slotted to get and met the number we wanted."

Murphy indicated that the bonus number slotted for the 61st pick was $600,000. There is plenty to be done before he joins the Blue Jays' organization though. The paperwork for signing the contract will be delayed some due to exchange rate and other issues that come from the Blue Jays' location in Canada.

"I probably won't start with the organization until early July," Murphy said. "I just can't wait to go and play ball."

The Inland Empire Baseball Coaches Association, in partnership with the 66ers, is hosting the San Bernardino County All-Star Baseball Game on Tuesday, June 8 at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. The all-star game, which was run before by San Bernardino Valley College, is resuming after not being played last year. For more information and to submit nominations, contact Redlands High School baseball coach and IEBCA president Estevan Valencia at estevan_valencia@redlands.k12.ca.us.

With its 11-1 victory over Pacific, the Colton High School baseball team won its first league title since 1995 according to head coach Mike Reh. The Yellowjackets (18-8 overall, 12-3 league) split with San Gorgonio, who won its second consecutive league title and will get the No. 1 seed by virtue of its 2-1 head-to-head advantage over Colton. The Spartans (22-4, 12-3) defeated San Bernardino 18-0 Thursday.

Cajon (17-8, 11-4) had a chance to make it a three-way split, but fell to Arroyo Valley 5-3 Thursday to pull into the No. 3 spot out of the SAL. Playoff seedings for Division 3 will be released Monday.

County clash set for Saturday

The 14th annual County Clash will take place Saturday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park with a baseball tripleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Colton and San Bernardino will start things off with a San Andreas League game at 1 p.m. and will be followed by two Citrus Belt League clashes -- Eisenhower vs. Redlands East Valley at 4 and Carter vs. Yucaipa at 7. Tickets can be purchased at the schools or at the 66ers' box office on Saturday.

This is the first of two County Clashes, with another one set to take place May 8.

Yucaipa won its semifinal game of the Sal Pointe Classic in Tucson, Arizona on Thursday night, beating Burbank 6-4 in a game that was reported after our deadline.
Yucaipa overcame six errors as Kevin Davidson (3-0) allowed only one earned run in six innings and went 2-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate.
Yucaipa plays in Friday's championship game against Tucson Canyon del Oro at 7 p.m. Canyon del Oro is 12-0 on the season and is currently ranked eighth in Arizona and second in its division by maxpreps.com. Sounds like it will be a second straight good test for the Thunderbirds, who crushed opponents in the early part of the tournament en route to the semifinals.

Six county players were honored as top 100 high school prospects in the latest issue of Baseball America. Barstow pitcher Aaron Sanchez tops the list at No. 25. Sanchez, a 6-foot-3 righthander who has verbally committed to Oregon, was also listed on the magazine's third-team Preseason High School All-America Team.

Other county players in the top 100 include Yucaipa pitcher Taijuan Walker (No. 37), former REV pitcher Tyler Shreve (No. 60), REV lefthanded pitcher Griffin Murphy (No. 61), Los Osos catcher Jake Hernandez (No. 77) and Upland pitcher Scott Frazier (No. 98).

It's come to my attention that REV senior quarterback/shortstop Tyler Shreve has been arrested for assault after physically attacking Wildcats baseball coach James Cordes during practice Wednesday. Redlands Daily Facts reporter Jesse Gill has been on this story from the jump and reported that Shreve attacked Cordes after being dismissed from the team for an undisclosed reason.

Gill's story can be read here. It's an updated version of the one that was linked earlier and includes a statement from Shreve on the incident.

One of the subplots of the story is Shreve's football scholarship to the University of Utah, which is sure to be in jeopardy after this incident. Gill contacted the university, which is in the process of reviewing the incident at this time.

Pete Marshall originally published this in the Daily Bulletin's blog, but here it is in case anyone on this side is interested.

Just got a call from Redlands East Valley athletic director Rhonda Fouch notifying me of three REV athletes signing during the early signing period. Volleyball player Johnna Fouch will sign with San Diego State Friday at 7 p.m. in the REV ASB room, while softball player Amy Nece will sign with North Carolina early next week, as will baseball player Griffin Murphy with San Diego. Nece is going on an official visit to North Carolina this upcoming weekend according to Fouch.

Yucaipa duo to sign

Its not a Fall Signing Period without some input from the Yucaipa baseball team, which will have two players signing this week. First baseman Wyatt Padgett will sign with BYU while outfielder Brian Derryberry will sign with UC Riverside at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, according to a voicemail I received from YHS athletic director Mark Anderson.

Any other coaches, athletic directors or parents who have athletes signing with Division I schools this week should e-mail me at tj.berka@inlandnewspapers.com or comment on this blog. We don't want to miss anyone.

Yucaipa baseball free to advance

The protest of Yucaipa's 15-7 CIF-SS Division II first-round victory over La Crescenta Crescenta Valley Thursday was rejected Friday according to Yucaipa athletic director Mark Anderson.

The protest, filed by Crescenta Valley coach Phil Torres, was filed because Torres claimed that Yucaipa catcher Cody Meservey didn't leave the premises promptly after having been ejected in the top of the second inning. However, according to Anderson, Meservey didn't need to leave the premises at all.

"The rule is different for players than coaches," Anderson said. "If a coach is ejected, he must leave the premises, but a player can stay in the dugout or in the stands as long as he is supervised by an adult, which we did."

After Meservey blew off some steam from the ejection, Anderson escorted Meservey from the baseball field and took him over to the football stadium, where he watched the rest of the game by looking over the bleachers.

"The rule is different because what are you supposed to do if a player is ejected on the road?" Anderson said. "He can't leave the campus, like the rule for coaches states. That's why it's different. I think its unfortunate that the umpires didn't know this rule and this got as far as it did."

Anderson drove to the CIF-SS offices in Los Alamitos to make the case for the No. 2-seeded Thunderbirds Friday morning. It didn't take much of an argument though, as the CIF had no inclination to change the result of the game.

"They said that I really didn't need to go down there because there were no grounds for a reversal," Anderson said. "I just wanted to make sure that we did everything in our power to explain our point of view."

Yucaipa will continue its playoff run with a second-round game against Cypress Tuesday at 3:15 p.m. at Yucaipa High School.

CIF rules against Mills

The CIF-Southern Section offices decided Tuesday that San Bernardino athletic director Patrick Mills should be suspended from coaching the Cardinals baseball team after pulling his team off of the field in the bottom of the fifth inning of San Bernardino's game with San Gorgonio on Friday afternoon. The San Bernardino Unified School District will comply with the CIF's suggestion according to CIF Director of Communications Thom Simmons.

Contacted via e-mail, Simmons submitted the below explanation on the CIF's position:

"CIF Southern Section Bluebook Rule 125.2 states very clearly that the expectation of the CIF Southern Section Executive Committee is for a coach that removes his team from a court or field prior to the end of a contest should be relieved from his/her duties for the balance of the season or face potential sanctions from the section. It is our understandiing that San Bernardino High School has done just that. We commend the San Bernardino principal for taking the actions he has to this point and await a final report from him with any possible additional penalties against Mr. Mills."

The last statement suggests that more sanctions against Mills could arise from the incident, where Mills had the San Bernardino baseball team walk off the field down 8-1 in the fifth inning to the Spartans. The Cardinals (3-21 overall, 1-12 San Andreas League) will conclude their season with an interim coach with two games against Cajon, playing at Cajon today and hosting the Cowboys Friday.
