All-star basketball games are certainly fun, but in a different way than regular season games.

If you're looking for polished team offense and defense, look elsewhere.

If you're looking for fast-paced action with slam dunks (for the boys) and a great collection of individual talent, then this is for you. And that's what you got to see on Friday night at Cajon High School in the Inland Empire All-Star Basketball Games.

It's the dreaded 4-5 matchup, the one that messes up many a NCAA men's basketball pool and both Summit and Etiwanda hope to pull the minor upset on Saturday.
Both the Summit girls and Etiwanda boys are seeded fifth in the Division I South Regional, and are playing at the No. 4 seeded team in the second round on Saturday. Summit is at Corona Santiago, while Etiwanda is at Los Angeles Loyola.

It was a racuous, hot and overflow crowd on Thursday night as Ontario Christian pulled out a 65-58 victory over host Aquinas to take home the Ambassador League boys basketball title.
Aquinas, which earlier endured a 6 minute,15 second scoreless stretch late in the 3rd and early in the fourth quarter, went cold again in overtime as the Falcons were held scoreless for the first 3:15 of overtime while Ontario Christian was scoring the first nine points.
Ontario Christian won despite a poor night from the foul line, as the Knights made just 19 of 32 free throws.
it wasn't quite as thrilling a finish as my other overtime game this week, when Cajon beat Arroyo Valley by 1 on a Michael Henley buzzer-beater in overtime. It could have been, as Ontario Christian's Kevin Ross missfired on a long attempt in the final seconds of regulation.
Demetrius Overstreet scored 20 points, Joseph Rushing had 15 and Carlos Padilla had 13 for Aquinas. Brandon Zuidema scored18 points, Cameron Levise scored 16 and Daylan Lawrence and Ross had 13 points apiece for the Knights.

That had to be the most tightly contested game I've seen all year on Tuesday night, when Cajon downed Arroyo Valley 62-61 in overtime, to clinch the San Andreas League boys basketball crown.
It probably wasn't the best-played game, but it was definitely the most fun to watch.
Great crowd at Arroyo Valley on senior night.
It was a tight game that featured 8 lead changes and 6 ties.
The last tie came after Arroyo Valey's Bobby Bonner sank a 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds left in regulation to tie the score 55-55.
Arroyo Valley scoring machine Stephen Marshall (no relation to me, as far as I know) made eight 3-pointers, including two in overtime and scored 31 points. His last 3-pointer with 1:52 to play in overtime gave Arroyo Valley at 61-59 lead.
Alonzo McCain missed a chance to tie the game when he made only one of two free throws with 1:05 to play in overtime. But Michael Henley made the off-balance jumper as time expired in overtime to lift the Cowboys to victory.

I was at the Southern California Shootout at Azusa Pacific, with some very intriguing games involving county boys basketball teams.

First, I arrived for the end of the Chino Hills-Upland game, which went into overtime tied 50-50. Myles Pearson went 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute of overtime, snapping a 53-53 tie en route to a 59-53 Upland win.

Next, it was Bloomington Christian and coach Danny Fuller facing his former JV high school coach Mike LeDuc of Glendora. Bloomington Christian, from 5AA, represented itself well, but ultimately came up short, losing 57-46 to the 2A Tartans.

Then it was a wild-and-woolly game between Colony and Santa Maria Righetti. Colony's offense was way off in the first half and the Titans trailed 33-22 at halftime. They picked it up in the second half, and got to within 69-66 in the final minute before Righetti held on for a 77-71 victory. So there were 55 points scored combined in the first half and 93 combined in the second half.

Next was the marquee game of the event, Etiwanda and Damien. Two years ago the same teams played in the same event at APU, and Etiwanda won it on a shot at the buzzer.

This time, Damien led for most of the first half and was ahead 25-23 at halftime. Etiwanda's defense went from very good to stifling in the second half. Damien went more than six minutes from late in the second quarter to the third quarter without scoring a point and Etiwanda began the second half with a 14-0 run. The Eagles never really looked back (Damien never got closer than 9 points) and sophomore Jordan McLaughlin scored 15 of his 27 points in the second half of a 64-45 Etiwanda victory.

Some of the county's best basketball teams are playing in one-day events the next two weekends: Jan. 28 at the SoCal Shootout at Azusa Pacific University and Feb. 3-4 in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.

Due to coaches not submitting results, some of the rankings are based on CIF polls as much as anything. Rialto girls basketball, unranked despite being 14-1, is the biggest slight I've found in the CIF polls. Are there others?

Newly-appointed Summit athletic director Steve Hickey has decided that he will not resume his duties as boys basketball coach, as the school has opened up the position within the Fontana Unified School District.

The 41-year old Hickey, the all-Sun boys basketball Coach of the Year, was named Summit's athletic director June 29 replacing Ed Kearby, who was promoted to assistant principal at the school. After nearly a month on the job, Hickey wasn't comfortable with the task of balancing his old position with his new job.

"You have to be 100 percent sure, and I wasn't," Hickey said. "I didn't want it to be a situation where I didn't take care of my duties with the other sports on campus because I was focusing on the basketball team. I didn't want to be put in that position, so I will not participate in the day-to-day duties (of the boys basketball team)."

Summit boys basketball coach Steve Hickey was officially named the school's athletic director Wednesday night, getting approval from the Fontana Unified School District's school board to replace Ed Kearby. Kearby was promoted to assistant principal at the high school.

"It hasn't really sunk in," Hickey said. "I have some big shoes to fill, because Ed did a great job of getting this thing going and building a lot of success in the five years since this school was opened."

The 41-year-old Hickey was an integral piece of Summit's overall athletic success, as he led the SkyHawks to the CIF-State Division II championship game this year en route to All-Sun Coach of the Year honors. But the new position might prevent Hickey from a return trip, as the veteran coach isn't sure whether he'll be able to coach with his new responsibilites.

"I don't want to shortchange other sports because I'm focusing on my sport," Hickey said. "That wouldn't be fair and I don't want other coaches to perceive that I'm showing favoritism to my sport. I'd like to coach, but I have to do what's best for the athletic department first.

"I'll have a decision by the end of August. Once school starts, I'll see how everything works out and go from there."

Hickey, Kearby move on up at Summit

Summit basketball coach Steve Hickey, the All-Sun boys basketball coach of the year this past season, will be promoted to athletic director Wednesday at the Fontana Unified School District board meeting according to the FUSD agenda. Hickey would replace Ed Kearby, who will be the assistant principal at Summit.

Hickey led the SkyHawk boys basketball team to the CIF-State Division II championship game at Arco Arena in Sacramento this past March, where it fell to San Jose Archbishop Mitty. How the promotion will affect his status as Summit's coach is unclear at this time.

A little outside of my normal reach, but I just got an email from IEBP club basketball coach Keith Howard saying that former Damien guard Chris Adams has committed to the University of San Francisco. Adams, a 2010 graduate of Damien, has played for the last year at Mack Academy in Charlotte, N.C. Local fans might remember him from the 2010 CIF-SS Division 2-A semifinal against Eisenhower, as he valiantly scored 34 points in an 82-74 loss to the eventual CIF champion Eagles.

Five county-based basketball players made ESPNRise's All-State Underclass Junior teams recently. Three county girls -- Summit center Jillian Alleyne, Cajon guard Sophia Bhasin and Rialto center Denae Williams were among 20 recognized by the website for their achievements this past season. Bhasin and Wiliams were first-team all-Sun selections this past season while Alleyne was a second-team pick.

Two boys with county selections were among 15 juniors selected for the boys underclass team. Chino Hills native Grant Jerrett, who attends two-time defending state champion La Verne Lutheran, and Chino native Chris Reyes, who is at Damien, were both selected. Jerrett has verbally committed to the University of Arizona.

Alta Loma High School has hired Colony assistant coach David Furman as its next basketball coach according to an e-mail sent last night by ALHS prinicipal James Cronin. Summit trailed by 10 points after a quarter, nine at halftime, and was still down eight after three quarters, but outscored top-seeded San Diego LIncoln 26-13 in the fourth quarter for a 72-67 victory in the Division II Regional Final at the Galen Center.
It was a 14-1 run to start the fourth that gave Summit a five point lead. Lincoln, the defending state champion, never got closer than two points the rest of the way.
Montigo Alford outscored Lincoln 9-1 by himself at one point during that run.
It is the first trip to the state finals for Summit, which will play on Friday at 8 p.m. in Sacramento.

Summit down 9 at the half

Lincoln started off fast against Summit in the Division II boys basketball regional final, taking a 22-12 lead after a quarter.

Lincoln's UCLA-bound guard Norman Powell has a game-high 10 points at the half.

REV's Berich to be honored

Redlands East Valley boys basketball coach Bill Berich will be honored at halftime of tomorrow's CIF-SS Division 1A boys championship game between Los Angeles Loyola and Capistrano Valley. Berich will be honored by the Southern California Interscholastic Basketball Coaches Association for his longevity in coaching.

Berich had one of his best years of a stellar career at REV this past season, leading the Wildcats to a 25-6 record and a berth in the D1A semifinals, where they fell to top-seeded Loyola.

Redlands Adventist wins D6A title

48 hours ago, there were zero Seventh-Day Adventist schools with CIF-Southern Section titles. Now there are two, as the Redlands Adventist Academy boys team joined Mesa Grande Academy's girls team with a 61-42 victory over Los Angeles Arshag Dickranian this afternoon at Mater Dei High School.

RAA (21-7) overwhelmed Dickranian with a 15-2 run to start the fourth quarter, outscoring Arshag 21-6 in the final eight minutes. Mikael Anderson had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulldogs, including a thunderous dunk right before the end of the first half that put RAA up four points. Tino Mkorombindo had 15 points and 12 rebounds for RAA while Kamaal Thomas added 10 points.

Jack Kerepetyan had 20 points and 15 rebounds for Arshag, but all of his points came in the first half, as RAA's pesky 5-foot-10 duo of seniors Stephen Lawson and Chido Mutodo frustrated the 6-6 Kerepetyan in the second half.

I was going to have an article in tomorrow's paper on San Bernardino senior guard Choncey White. However, the Cardinals were upset 62-54 by Manhattan Beach Mira Costa last night in the first round of the CIF-SS Division 2A playoffs, so the story won't run.

Luckily, this is one of the main reasons I enjoy having this blog, because, quite frankly, White is one of the more impressive players I've had the pleasure to watch this season and deserves to be lauded. He stands about 5-foot-10, which means I can look him straight in the eye. But anyone who watches White knows that he plays much bigger than that.

"I go into the lane without fear because I really feel that no one can stop me," White said. "They may be bigger than me, but I'm going to get where I want to go and I'm not going to be scared off by bigger players."

White exhibited this tenacity in San Bernardino's historic 83-57 victory at Cajon Jan. 19 - the Cardinals first victory over the Cowboys in 18 years. At a key juncture in the second quarter of what was a close game, White and Cajon's 6-7 center Lorelle Martin were locked in a scramble for a loose ball when the bigger Martin pushed White out of the way.

White was unintimidated, getting right back into Martin's face (or more accurately, arching his neck to talk to Martin at close range) and bugging the Cajon player to the point where Martin pushed him off, earning a technical foul and setting the fire for a Cardinal burst that eventually overwhelmed Cajon.

The San Andreas League saw three basketball streaks, all of which involved Cajon in some way, shape or form, disinegrate during this season. The most notable of the three came on the girls' side, as the Cowgirls saw their 85-game league winning streak -- a streak that dated back to the 2002-03 campaign -- snapped Jan. 28 with a 43-41 loss against Rialto. Cajon and the Knights, the No. 1 seed in the Division 2AA playoffs, tied for the league championship. Summit now has the longest league win streak in the county for girls basketball, having won all 50 of its Sunkist League games since opening its doors in 2006.

San Bernardino also broke a pair of streaks this past season, as the Cardinals defeated Cajon for the first time in 18 years en route to winning their first league title since 1993. San Bernardino, the No. 6 seed in the D2A playoffs, broke their streak of futility against Cajon with an 83-57 win Jan. 19 and extended their winning streak over the Cowboys with a 79-71 win last Monday. San Bernardino has now won 18 SAL games in a row dating back to last year.

Other boys basketball teams with long league winning streaks include Eisenhower and Summit, who won undefeated league titles in the Citrus Belt and Sunkist Leagues, respectively. The Eagles have now won 32 CBL games in a row dating back to the 2008-09 season while the SkyHawks have won 29 games in the Sunkist League dating back to 08-09.

San Bernardino High School boys basketball coach Darin Graham gives his team the night of and the morning after a big win to celebrate. After Monday's 79-73 victory over Cajon clinched the Cardinals' first league championship in 18 years, Graham will give his players the afternoon to celebrate as well.

"In one word, the feeling is great," Graham said. "This was a long time coming and the mood around campus is something I haven't seen here in a while. Students, teachers, administrators, everyone is happy and school spirit is as high as it has been in years."

That school spirit contributed to an electric atmosphere at Cardinal City Arena Monday night, as famed alumni such as Mark Seay and Jack Brown were among the fans attending. Recent Cardinal alumni spearheaded the Gatorade bath of Graham after the victory and helped lead the throng of fans who rushed the floor to celebrate the historic win.

"Everyone who has been in this program can share in this victory," Graham said. "Cajon has dominated across the board for a long time and for us to get this victory meant so much, from our current players to our former players. They all were a part of what led up to this."

After losing to the Cardinals 83-57 at Cajon Jan. 19 for their first loss to San Bernardino in 18 years, Cajon came out playing well, leading for most of the first two quarter and only being down 33-32 at halftime. But a 22-13 Cardinal spurt in the third quarter led by seniors Choncey White, who ended with 23 points, and Jeremiah Tardy, who had 17 on the game, gave San Bernardino wiggle room and eventually got the party started.

"We were 12-0 coming in, they were 11-1," Graham said. "I told our guys that they weren't going to back down and let us have this, that we had to take it. That's exactly what we did."

Los Osos High School will be holding its annual Martin Luther King Day Classic one-day boys basketball tournament Monday starting at 8 a.m., with several local teams dotting the nine-game schedule.

The host Grizzlies will play in the second-to-last game of the day against Ontario at 6:30 p.m. That game is sandwiched between two of the premier games of the day: Etiwanda -- the No. 2 team in the latest CIF-SS Division 1AA poll -- will play Ventura at 5 p.m., and Chino Hills will play Rancho Cucamonga in the last game of the evening, at 8.

The rest of the Classic will go as follows: Claremont vs. Alta Loma at 8 a.m., Monrovia vs. La Puente Bishop Amat at 9:30 a.m., Twentynine Palms vs. Miller at 11 a.m., Jurupa Hills vs. Glendora at 12:30 p.m., Damien vs. San Dimas at 2 p.m., and Santa Monica vs. Eastvale Roosevelt at 3:30 p.m.

Cason commits to Portland

Summit basketball player Dorian Cason verbally committed to the University of Portland Wednesday according to Keith Howard, Cason's travel ball coach. Cason, a 6-foot-7 senior forward, averaged 12.5 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots a game for the SkyHawks last season en route to all-Sunkist League honors.

I just got off the phone with Aquinas director of marketing Gina Roquet, who told me that Aquinas has hired Gabriel Padilla as its new boys basketball coach. Padilla, an assistant at Aquinas, will replace David Johnson, who has taken an assistant coach job with the Pepperdine women's basketball team.

Also, Aquinas promoted assistant volleyball coach Sarah Rice to head coach to replace Jessica Granados. Granados, who played with Rice at Cal State San Bernardino, left after a season to pursue professional volleyball opportunities in Europe.

Inland Empire Basketball is having a banquet to honor the Eisenhower boys basketball team's back-to-back CIF-SS Division 2-A championships on Tuesday from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at Sierra Lakes Golf Club in Fontana. The black-tie-optional event will feature UC Riverside athletic director Stan Morrison will be the keynote speaker at the event, which will celebrate the Eagles' achievements from the last two years, including their Division II state championship of 2009 and the awarding of the Wooden Award to senior guard Alex Varner.
Entry fee to the event is $30, with checks payable to Inland Empire Basketball.

Another note from Fowler that I thought should be passed along...

Considering the amount of its graduates who play basketball for a living, the Etiwanda High School alumni basketball game on May 21 won't exactly be full of players trying to capture their former glory.

Fresh off their NBA rookie seasons, New Orleans Hornets point guard Darren Collison of UCLA fame and Portland Trail Blazers power forward Jeff Pendergraph will headline a group of players that includes some who play professionally overseas.

Collison, who won a CIF championiship at Etiwanda with the Arizona State-bound Pendergraph in 2005 and led UCLA to three final four appearances in four seasons, thrived in the absence of injured Hornets point guard Chris Paul, averaging 19 points and 8.5 assists the last three months of this season.

The alumni game will begin at 6:30 p.m. at Etiwanda on May 21.

Eisenhower boys basketball player Alex Varner and former Colony boys basketball player Tyler Lamb will be honored Friday by the John R. Wooden Award Comittee, as they won the Wooden Awards for Division 2 and Division I respectively.

Varner, the D2 winner, and Lamb, the D1 winner, will be honored at a banquet at the Los Angeles Athletic Club alongside the men's and women's college basketball players of the year. They will also receive a plaque and $300 to go to their school's athletic fund.

These were e-mailed to me last Thursday by Arroyo Valley athletic director Matt Howell, but I was in Las Vegas and out of e-mail access. Plus, my typing could have been ugly after spending afternoons at various sportsbooks watching my brackets spontaneously combust.

So I apologize for the delay and here they are.

Just got the e-mail on this from Redlands athletic director Ken Morse. The player of the year wasn't really a surprise, as Eisenhower senior guard Alex Varner - the "closer" in many of Ike's victories this year - won MVP honors.

As for other leagues in the area, please send all-league basketball and soccer teams to tj.berka@inlandnewspapers.com or sports@inlandnewspapers.com.

Redlands' Scott announces retirement

One of the more notable basketball coaches in the county is stepping down, as Redlands boys basketball coach Brad Scott announced his retirement Wednesday night at the Terriers' postseason banquet. Scott took over the Terriers in 2001 and has won at least 20 games a season for the past seven seasons, including a 20-7 mark this past season.

Kevin Trudgeon's article in the Daily Facts can be accessed here. In working with Scott the last three seasons, I always found him to be extremely accessible and friendly, win or lose. The next coach at Redlands will definitely have some sizable shoes to fit into.

Four county teams - Eisenhower, Etiwanda, Colony and Summit - qualified for the state playoffs, with defending state champion Eisenhower grabbing the No. 1 seed in Division 2. The Eagles get a bye from Tuesday's Round 1, hosting the Mark Keppel-Liberty winner in the quarterfinals Thursday.

Etiwanda is also seeded, as the CIF-SS Division 1-AA runner-up Eagles are the No. 3 seed in Division 1 and host El Camino Tuesday. Summit plays at San Pedro in D2 Tuesday while Colony plays at No. 2-seeded Westchester in D1 Tuesday.

Things are a bit different this year. Instead of playing out the SoCal regional this week - culminating in the SoCal championship on Saturday - the first, second and semifinals will be played this week, with a week off before the SoCal finals March 20 and the state finals March 27. Why they did this, I have no idea.

After a week off for National Signing Day and disease, the polls are back! The county is representing at the higher levels, as Chino Hills (Division I-A) and Summit (Division II-AA) have joined D2-A No. 1 Eisenhower as top-ranked teams. Should make for some fun when the pairings get released Sunday.

CIF-SS boys basketball polls

Nothing too crazy this week, as Eisenhower remains No. 1 in Division II-A while Chino Hills and Summit retain the No. 2 spots in D1-A and D2-AA. Saturday will have an interesting matchup, as the SkyHawks host Division I-A No. 4 Cajon.

A few days late, but I thought I'd put these out here for public consumption. Eisenhower remains No. 1in Division II-A while Summit and Alta Loma take the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, respectively, in D2-A. Chino Hills remains No. 2 in DI-A as well.

The San Bernardino boys basketball team is back in Southern California after spending Dec. 27-31 in Logan, Utah playing in the Cache Valley Electric Holiday Classic. But as far as Cardinal coach Darin Graham is concerned, a lot of them wouldn't have minded staying in snowy Utah for much longer.

This particular tournament is a bit unusual in that it has an out-of-state team, El Paso (Texas) Chapin, competing. And because of a UIL rule (Texas' equivalent to the CIF) prohibiting Texas teams from playing on the 26th, Chapin and its first-round opponent, Barstow, will have to play its first and second-round games on Dec. 28.

Butler to be honored at Victor Valley

Former Victor Valley High School boys basketball coach Ollie Butler will be honored by the school next Thursday, as VVHS will dedicate the floor in Keith Gunn Gymnasium in his honor as part of a game against Granite Hills.

The dedication will come before the 7 p.m. start and will be accompanied by a reception after the game. Butler, 79, coached at Victor Valley for 29 years from 1962-1990 after spending time in the Air Force and graduating from the University of Oklahoma. In that time, he accumulated 605 wins to 251 losses and led the Jackrabbits to 13 league titles during that span -- including 10 in a row from 1974-83.

Wednesday recruiting roundup

Redlands defensive end Jordan Thomas verbally committed to San Diego State this past weekend, according to Rivals.com. The 6-foot-1, 240-pounder, a three-star prospect according to Rivals, chose the Aztecs over San Jose State.

Thomas joins Colony cornerback Jered Bell, who verbally committed to Colorado last week after paying a visit to the campus in Boulder, Colo., on Nov. 6, according to Colony head football coach Anthony Rice. Bell was drawing interest from Colorado State, among others, but Colorado made his only scholarship offer.

This week also saw Los Osos forward Khalil Kelley sign with University of Pacific. The 6-foot-7 power forward averaged 9.3 points and 7.3 rebounds last season in helping the Grizzlies to a second-place finish in the Baseline League.

Basketball playoff divisions released

The 2009-2010 boys and girls playoff divisions were released Tuesday with a few notable changes. One of the most notable dealt with Hesperia, which dropped from Division I-AA to Division II-A in both genders. Redlands East Valley also dropped in both genders, moving down from I-AA to I-A.

Another notable team that moved up was the Colony girls basketball team. After winning the D3-A CIF title two years ago and the D1-A title last year, the Titans will have a chance to win a third title in a third different division, as they've moved up to D1-AA. Summit also made a leap up, moving from D2-A to D1-A.

Other notable girls teams to move up include Fontana (D1-A to D1-AA), Colton and Ontario (D2-AA to D1-A) and Alta Loma (D2-A to D2-AA). Boys teams to move up include Los Osos (D1-A to D1-AA), Colton and Ontario (D2-AA to D1-A), Yucaipa (D2-A to D1-A) and Summit (D2-A to D2-AA).

Of the new schools, Oak Hills was placed in D4-AA in both genders while Citrus Valley was put in D4-A.

Three local hoopsters commit

With the fall signing period coming up next month, basketball recruiting is starting to pick up. Three county players have made verbal commitments to Division I schools.

Ayala senior Rhema Gardner verbally committed to UCLA earlier this week according to ESPN.com, joining her older sister and former All-Sun first-team selection Rebekah Gardner. The 6-foot-2 Gardner averaged 12.9 points and 11.1 rebounds for the Bulldogs last season.

Chino Hills guard Derek Brown also made his choice according to Scout.com and picked San Jose State after an official visit last month. Brown, a 6-foot-2 senior, won Sierra League MVP honors by averaging 16.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.

But it wasn't just seniors who committed this week. Etiwanda junior swingman Byron Wesley, an all-Sun first-team selection at Cajon last year, committed to USC according to Rivals.com. The 6-foot-5 Wesley averaged 18.7 points and 7.4 rebounds as a sophomore.

Mater Dei worthy of the hype

With a No. 1 national ranking and five athletes who have either signed National Letters of Intent to or have verbally committed with Division I schools, the Santa Ana Mater Dei boys basketball team have become the high school basketball version of The Beatles, employing an army of passionate Monarch fans and drumming up interest at every venue they play at.

The Monarchs made a stop in the IE Friday, heading to Upland High School to play the Highlanders in a Division I-AA second round game. The result wasn't surprising, as Mater Dei rolled 85-52 against a game Upland team who, while brilliant in spurts, couldn't quite keep up.

I sat courtside at that game and saw Upland senior post Zach Robbins, junior guard Chris Powell and freshman guard Myles Pearson hold their own against the Monarchs. But as curiousity would have it, I also watched the four Mater Dei Division I guys closely - the fifth, 6-foot-8 forward Andy Brown, who signed with Stanford, didn't play due to injury - and formulated this analysis.

So Etiwanda, who will almost certainly play Mater Dei in the D1-AA semifinals Friday if it defeats Lynwood tonight, take note.

Tyler Lamb, junior forward: Lamb is the one that most of us are familiar with, as he starred at Colony for the first two years of his career. At 6-foot-5 with quick-twitch athleticism and a smooth perimeter jumper, the UCLA verbal commit is an almost impossible one-on-one matchup at this level.

But the thing I like about Lamb is his unselfishness. With the 6-10 twins David Wear and Travis Wear, Lamb doesn't have to be "The Man". And quite frankly, he plays like he cares less about being the man. He's a jack of all trades, as he can guard the perimeter, poke out the occasional steal and rebound well in the post. But he can make the jaw-dropping athletic play, as he serving a dipsy-doo layup and a tomahawk layup against the Highlanders. He'll score more next year, but is content to be a glue guy this season.

David and Travis Wear, senior forwards: I glumped the Wear brothers together because they are twins and I am lazy. However, the McDonald's All-Americans showed a great deal of physicality and fluidity on the interior. Despite their heights, David and Travis were very arely out of control, showing good footwork while setting up in the post and on the spin move, which resulted in 12-foot jump shot opportunities and layup opportunities at the rim. David Wear also showed athleticism, being on the receiving end of an alley-oop pass from Lamb. They really didn't shoot outside of 12 feet, but they really didn't have to against Upland/

The brothers, who signed with North Carolina, also showed a great deal of maturity on the court. Whenever either of the twins were called for a foul (usually while defending Robbins), they would both quietly put their hands up acknowledging the foul and, on a couple occasions, even told the whistling referees "Good call." In a sport where whining has become more and more commonplace, that was refreshing to see.

Gary Franklin, junior guard: This was the guy that stood out to me more than anyone. Franklin, a USC verbal commit, had his way against the smaller Upland guards, creating offense pretty much at will. He's got good size at 6-3 and elite speed, as he blew by pretty much everyone on the court en route to 24 points. He also showed very good court vision, feeding the Wears in good position in the post and finding perimeter shooters for open 3-point attempts.

My only criticism really is that there seems to be a shot-put motion to his shot, especially from long range. That motion doesn't seem to have any negative effect though, as he nailed four of seven 3-pointers.

Division IV-AA, Division IV-A pairings

Rim of the World gets a tough draw in the first round of the Division IV-A playoffs, as it plays at No. 1 Orange Lutheran Wednesday. Big Bear is set up to play the winner of that game in the second round if the Bears win at home against No. 16 Montclair Prep.

Division IV-AA sees Yucca Valley play at No. 14 Ontario Christian and San Dimas play at No. 10 Bishop Amat.

On the girls side, Twentynine Palms grabbed the No. 8 seed in Division IV-A and will host Flintridge Sacred Heart Thursday. Big Bear also plays at Los Angeles Baptist in that division. Yucca Valley was named the No. 8 seed in D4-AA and hosts Ridgecrest Burroughs, while San Dimas hosts No. 13 Calabasas.

Division III-A, III-AA pairings

Diamond Ranch grabbed the top seed in the D3-A playoffs, where it will host Anaheim Magnolia Wednesday. Miramonte League rival Bonita grabbed the No. 6 seed and hosts Corona del Mar.

Other locals in the D3A bracket are No. 12 Twentynine Palms, which hosts Mountain View, Barstow, which hosts No. 13 Brea Olinda, and Apple Valley, which hosts No. 7 Cerritos. Granite Hills is the only local team the DIII-AA. The Cougars will host No. 9 Riverside Ramona.

Barstow received the No. 7 seed and will host Heritage Thursday, while No. 12 Bonita will host Beckman.

Division II-A pairings

The Summit girls basketball team received the No. 2 seed in the D2-A playoffs, only behind Mater Dei. The SkyHawks will host Lakeside on Thursday. Don Lugo also received a seed, as the No. 13 Conquistadores will host Riverside Patriot.

Other games of note are Alta Loma at No. 4 Norco and Eisenhower at No. 15 Jurupa Valley.

On the boys side, Eisenhower grabbed the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the process. Ike won't get its playoffs started until Friday, where it will play the winner of Westlake and No. 16 Santa Barbara.

Other seeded locals are No. 8 Summit, which hosts Mark Keppel, No. 10 Ayala, which plays at San Jacinto, No. 13 Damien, which plays at Baldwin Park, and No. 15 Yucaipa, which hosts Mira Costa. Don Lugo also hosts No. 14 Peninsula.

Division II-AA pairings

Nothing too crazy on the boys side, as there aren't any local teams seeded. However, San Bernardino was included in the bracket as an at-large team and will play at No. 14 La Serna Wednesday. Alta Loma, behind star junior J.J. O'Brien, plays at No. 9 Huntington Beach Edison.

Other games of local interest include Ontario at No. 3 Glendora and No. 10 West Ranch at Serrano.

On the girls side, Sultana notched itself the No. 14 seed and will host Temecula Valley Thursday. Other games of note are Serrano at No. 15 Anaheim Katella, No. 6 Huntington Beach at Kaiser and Ontario at No. 4 Moreno Valley Vista del Lago.

The Cajon boys basketball team didn't get a No. 2 seed like their female counterparts did, but the Cowboys weren't far off, as they were named the No. 4 seed in the Division I-A pairings released moments ago. Cajon hosts Corona Wednesday.

Chino Hills was the next seeded local team, grabbing the No. 8 seed. The Huskies will host Riverside Poly and could eventually be placed against No. 1 Murrieta Valley in the third round next week. Los Osos was made the No. 12 seed and hosts Whittier California, while other local games include Rancho Cucamonga at No. 7 Hemet West Valley and No. 14 Perris at San Gorgonio.

On the girls side, Colony was named the No. 1 seed, one of two County teams among the top 4 seeds. The Titans host Capistrano Valley Thursday while No. 4 Ayala hosts Fontana.

Other local seeds are No. 8 Rancho Cucamonga, which hosts Riverside King, and No. 10 Chino Hills, which hosts Yucaipa. San Gorgonio will play at No. 12 Murrieta Valley while Chino plays at No. 3 Moreno Valley Canyon Springs.

Division I-AA pairings released

Today is basketball pairings day, and the first of those pairings was released moments ago with Division I-AA boys and girls. Starting with the ladies, Cajon grabbed the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Long Beach Poly, which was expected. The Cowgirls will start off hosting Redondo Union, the third-place team out of the Bay League, on Thursday.

Other seeded local girls teams are No. 5 Etiwanda, which hosts Diamond Bar, No. 12 Silverado, which hosts Downey Warren, No. 13 Rialto, which hosts Riverside La Sierra, and No. 15 Redlands, which plays at Dana Hills. Other games of note are No. 14 Vista Murrieta at Los Osos, Hesperia at No. 9 Palmdale Knight and Redlands East Valley at No. 11 Oxnard Pacifica.

On the boys side, Etiwanda leads the locals as a No. 5 seed. The Baseline League champs will host Lakewood Wednesday. Other seeded County teams are No. 7 Colony, which hosts Diamond Bar, No. 10 Redlands, which hosts Arroyo Valley, and No. 16 Upland, which plays at Desert Sky champion Silverado. The Upland-Silverado winner will almost certainly get the unenviable task of playing No. 1-seed Santa Ana Mater Dei in the second round Friday. Miller also has a tough matchup coming up, as it'll host No. 3 Compton Dominguez. Hesperia also hosts Corona Santiago.

San Bernardino forfeit upheld

The forfeit of the San Bernardino boys basketball team's 94-85 victory at San Gorgonio on Jan. 23 was upheld by a 5-1 vote at a San Andreas League athletic directors meeting according to San Bernardino AD Patrick Mills and San Gorgonio AD Matt Maeda.

The Cardinals forfeited the game to the Spartans after a freshman basketball coach, who had been ejected from a game at another site earlier in the day, sat on the end of the San Bernardino bench for the varsity game. San Gorgonio filed a protest of the game shortly after.

"I was notified in the fourth quarter of the varsity game by our freshman coach," Maeda said. "He told me that the coach had been ejected from the freshman game earlier that day at San Bernardino High and asked if he was allowed to be on the bench. I said absolutely not."

The athletic directors and coaches talked briefly after the game about the coach in question, though they had different interpretations of what should have been done.

"I talked to (San G boys coach) Cedric Wells at the end of the game and he said that he didn't want the forfeiture, but would give it to his players for a vote and let me know," Mills said. "However, Maeda had already sent the paperwork in.

"The coach's oldest daughter plays on the varsity basketball team and he was there for that and asked if he could sit on the end of the bench. He was told it was OK as long as he didn't do any coaching."

Maeda felt that the rule, which is Rule 16.27 according to the CIF rulebook, needed to be enforced, as it was impossible to quantify what affect the ineligible coach did or did not have.

"The rule states that a coach or player that is ejected isn't even allowed to be in the building to watch, much less on the bench," Maeda said. "They stated the rule like that so there is no grey area. You can't just say 'You can stay there as long as you are not really involved' because how do you determined how involved you can be?"

The vote Wednesday was for seeding preferences for the upcoming playoffs rather than the overall record. The playoff brackets will be released Sunday by the CIF offices and San Bernardino didn't want the forfeited loss, or the extra win, under consideration for league seeding purposes.

"It's happened before," Mills said. "(Pacific athletic director) Carmel Brand mentioned that Pacific's 1995 boys basketball team went 10-0 but had to forfeit all of its games due to an ineligible player but we were awarded the top seed out of the league. The league can award its seeds however it wants and that's what we were asking for.

"We didn't use an ineligible player. We didn't have a varsity coach participating illegally. I've never seen a coach make a basket for a team."

Said Maeda: "In my opinion, voting for that would have been a contradiction of why the rule is in place. If you are going to have that rules, you have to enforce the consquences that result from it."

The ruling puts the Cardinals, who have lost their last two games, in a precarious spot. San Bernardino (14-10 overall, 5-4 SAL) is tied with Arroyo Valley (12-11, 5-4) for third place in the league, one game behind second-place San G (12-13, 6-3). One game remains in the regular season, with San Bernardino playing at first-place Cajon, San G hosting fifth-place Pacific and Arroyo Valley playing at winless Colton.

Should things hold up, the Cardinals will be looking at relying on an at-large bid to qualify for the Division II-AA playoffs. Only three teams automatically qualify from the six-team SAL, which will leave the Cardinals on the edge of their seats for the CIF-Southern Section's version of Selection Sunday if the expected results take place.

"I don't know if we'll make it in or not," Mills said. "It depends on how many automatic qualifiers get in from the other leagues. It's going to be a tight one."

Whatever the result may be, San Gorgonio desires to put the incident in the past and focus on the future.

"We didn't want this," Maeda said. "It's as stressful for our school and our administration as it has been for San Bernardino's. We want all of the San Bernardino schools to do well and we want to avoid situations like these.

"Had we known about it before the game, we would have let them know. No athletic directors want to go through this."

In the hustle and bustle that comes with deadlines in the newspaper business, sometimes things get in too late to be put in the next day's paper. That happened with the San Bernardino boys basketball team, which is starting to turn some heads in the San Andreas League.

The Cardinals made history Wednesday night, defeating Arroyo Valley 81-74 for their first-ever varsity boys basketball win over the Hawks. The Cardinals (12-6 overall, 3-0 San Andreas League) went 23 of 27 from the free-throw line and had three players score over 20 points. James Harper led the way with 26 points, Jeremiah Tardy scored 22 and Devonte Chatman added 20.

Wednesday's win was the sixth in a row for San Bernardino, which plays at San Gorgonio Friday before hosting a big game with SAL co-leader Cajon next Wednesday.

The new basketball playoff divisions were released today. Gone are the league-based divisions - where every team in a league is assigned to the same division. Instead, it looks to be a mostly individual, enrollment-based dividing process.

Performance isn't as much of a factor, but was factored in, which explains some differences between the boys and girls divisions. So if this looks funky, that's why. For the constraints of space, I'll just list the teams in the Sun and Bulletin areas.
