The Arrowhead Christian boys volleyball team may have fallen short in its quest for its first-even CIF-SS championship this past Saturday, but the season isn't over for the Eagles, who are taking part in the CIF-State Southern California Regional boys volleyball tournament this week.

The Eagles, seeded No. 5 in Division III, will play at top-seeded Laguna Beach tonight at 7 p.m in the regional semifinals. Arrowhead Christian advanced by defeating No. 4-seeded Los Angeles Foshay Learning Center 25-15, 25-18, 25-17 in the quarterfinals Tuesday.
Should ACA pull the upset against Laguna Beach, which won the CIF-SS Division 2 championship, it would be matched up with the winner of the semifinal between San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's -- which defeated ACA in the CIF-SS title game -- and Solana Beach Santa Fe Christian.

ACA advances to CIF title game

A technical error in the Sun this morning killed the writeup of this game, so I thought I'd do one of my own.

The No. 4-seeded Arrowhead Christian boys volleyball team got a gargantuan effort from senior outside hitter Will Quanstrom and setter David Shippee to advance to the CIF-SS Division 5 final with a four-game victory over Palos Verdes Chadwick in the semifinals late Tuesday.

The Eagles will face No. 2-seeded San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's in the D5 final Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at Cypress College. To get there, ACA defeated Chadwick 18-25, 25-23, 27-25, 25-18 thanks to the heroics of Quanstrom, who set a school record with 48 kills while adding 10 digs and seven blocks. Shippee had 50 assists for the Eagles while Josh Shaw had seven kills and nine blocks.

A few county teams survived the first round of CIF-SS boys volleyball play Tuesday and will be playing in the second round today, with three teams (Miller, Arrowhead Christian and Summit) hosting games.

Miller was the only Citrus Belt League team to survive the first round Tuesday, defeating Montebello in four games (21-25, 25-12, 25-22, 32-30) to notch the first playoff victory in school history. The Rebels will be tested tonight at 7 p.m. against Torrance Bishop Montgomery in Division 4 action.

ACA, the No. 4 seed in Division 5, will host Saddleback Valley Christian at 7 p.m. tonight after sweeping Gardena Serra in three games by the score of 25-15, 25-23, 25-23. San Andreas League champion Summit also advanced in D5 play by taking care of Glendale Adventist in routine fashion, sweeping it 25-10, 25-10, 25-13. The SkyHawks will host Bellflower St. John Bosco at 7 p.m.

Ontario Christian also advanced in the D5 playoffs with a four-game victory over Carson CAMS -- 25-16, 25-11, 21-25, 25-21. The Knights will play at No. 2 seeded San Juan Capistrano St. Margaret's at 5 p.m. today.
