All-star basketball games are certainly fun, but in a different way than regular season games.
If you're looking for polished team offense and defense, look elsewhere.
If you're looking for fast-paced action with slam dunks (for the boys) and a great collection of individual talent, then this is for you. And that's what you got to see on Friday night at Cajon High School in the Inland Empire All-Star Basketball Games.

The Summit girls basketball team was as close as one point as late as the third quarter, but they eventually fell 69-59 at top-seeded Santa Ana Mater Dei in a CIF State Division I Southern California Regionals semifinal on Tuesday night.
Jillian Alleyne scored 18 points with 17 rebounds, Ajaee Foster scored 11 of her 14 points in the second half, Ashley Weissmann made 3-of-5 3-pointers and scored 12 points, while Brooklynn Jackson made two 3-pointers and scored eight points and Adrianna Brodie scored seven. All the Summit points were scored by the starters, who played almost the entire game.
Summit, the CIF-SS Division 1A champion, actually fell behind 60-46 in the fourth before battling back one final time to get within 64-59 when Weissmann made three free throws with 32.4 seconds left. But Mater Dei made 5-of-8 free throws from there on out to close out the game.
With Summit trailing by 14 points in the first half on Saturday night in the CIFState Division I Southern California Regional second round game against Corona Santiago, I had a feeling the SkyHawks would make a run.
After all, they had held a second-half lead against Santiago in their meeting earlier this season before falling in the championship game of the Ayala Best of the West Tournament, 76-69.
They weren't going to get blown out, but as is the question often with comebacks, will the comeback take too much out of a team?
As it turns out, no.
It's the dreaded 4-5 matchup, the one that messes up many a NCAA men's basketball pool and both Summit and Etiwanda hope to pull the minor upset on Saturday.
Both the Summit girls and Etiwanda boys are seeded fifth in the Division I South Regional, and are playing at the No. 4 seeded team in the second round on Saturday. Summit is at Corona Santiago, while Etiwanda is at Los Angeles Loyola.
Some of the county's best basketball teams are playing in one-day events the next two weekends: Jan. 28 at the SoCal Shootout at Azusa Pacific University and Feb. 3-4 in the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.
I don't have the SoCal Shootout Schedule yet, but here is the one for Mater Dei:
Friday Feb. 3

4:30pm Rialto (Girls) vs Rosary (Girls)
6:00pm Orange Lutheran (Girls) vs Oaks Christian (Girls)

The Rialto girls basketball team after its involvement in a fight in Tuesday's game against Pacific, will have to forfeit its next game, on Thursday against Colton, coach Michael Anderson learned on Wednesday.
"The officials lost control of the game," Anderson said. "I started talking to them about it 1:40 into the game."
Rialto coach Michael Anderson revealed this on Wednesday. The fight in the second half of the win over Pacific resulted in the halting of the game and five Rialto players and some Pacific players ejected. That left 4 Rialto players and Anderson assumed he could use those 4 plus call up a couple players from the JV team to compete in Thursday's game against last-place Colton.
However, he learned Wednesday that all 9 varsity players were suspended and the team will forfeit its game against Colton. That will drop Rialto to 15-2 overall, 7-1 in the San Andreas League.
OK, here they are, for better or for worse.
I compiled the first Top 5 rankings for the county in the winter sports. They are running in Thursday's paper. Due to coaches not submitting results, some of the rankings are based on CIF polls as much as anything. Rialto girls basketball, unranked despite being 14-1, is the biggest slight I've found in the CIF polls. Are there others?

Rialto's do-everything forward Brittani Walker will sign with La Sierra University in a ceremony in the Rialto High School Gymnasium according to a phone call I received from Knights coach Michael Anderson. Other teams to be ranked include fellow SAL co-champion Rialto at No. 15. The Knights also won the CIF-SS Division 2AA title and made it to the CIF-State Division II championship game before losing to Stockton St. Mary's. For the second time in as many meetings with Buena, Janae Sharpe made a buzzer-beater to give RIalto the victory. This time, Rialto's 44-42 win vaulted the Knights into the Division II state championship game.
Sharpe's basket with 8.5 seconds to go tied the score 42-42. Then Denae Williams took a charge with 2.8 seconds to go. Sharpe then caught a long inbounds pass and hit a runner from the free throw line as time expired.
Rialto is headed to the state finals for the first time in school history. They will play on Friday at 6 p.m. at Arco Arena in Sacramento
After the offensive doldrums of the second quarter, both teams shot better in the third.
Buena went on an 11-4 run to take the lead for the first time since the first quarter.
Now, after three quarters, Buena leads Rialto 33-32.
Could we be in for another great finish?
Each team scored only four points in the second quarter, but Rialto leads Ventura Buena 18-15 at halftime of the Southern California Division III championship at the Galen Center.
Rialto led 14-11 after a quarter, then held Buena to a single free throw until a 3-pointer in the final minute cut the Knights' lead to 18-15.
Here are some ugly second quarter numbers: Buena 1-10 from the field, 1-4 from the line. RIalto 2-17 from the field, 0-0 from the line.
Overall, Rialto is shooting 23 percent from the field at the half, while Buena is at 26.
But the bottom line is, Rialto is leading, 16 minutes away from a berth in its first state championship game.
Cajon girls basketball coach Mark Lehman and boys basketball coach Randy Murray are once again spearheading the annual Boys and Girls Senior All-Star Basketball Game between All-Star teams from San Bernardino and Riverside counties. The 31st Annual edition of these games will be played April 22 at 6 p.m. (girls) and 8 p.m. (boys) at Cajon High School and both coaches are looking for nominations for the game, which will feature a 3-point shooting contest at halftime of the girls game and a slam-dunk contest at halftime of the boys game.
Nominating coaches and athletic directors should send Lehman (girls) and Murray (boys) the following information in their nominaton -- player's name, jersey number, high school, position, email address, cell and/or home phone number, height, statistics and why they should be representing their county. This information should be e-mailed to Lehman for the girls at mark.lehman@sbcusd.com or Murray for the boys at randy.murray@sbcusd.com.
The brackets for the next step of California's February/March Madness were released today by the CIF-State offices. The San Andreas League saw three basketball streaks, all of which involved Cajon in some way, shape or form, disinegrate during this season. The most notable of the three came on the girls' side, as the Cowgirls saw their 85-game league winning streak -- a streak that dated back to the 2002-03 campaign -- snapped Jan. 28 with a 43-41 loss against Rialto. Cajon and the Knights, the No. 1 seed in the Division 2AA playoffs, tied for the league championship. Summit now has the longest league win streak in the county for girls basketball, having won all 50 of its Sunkist League games since opening its doors in 2006.
San Bernardino also broke a pair of streaks this past season, as the Cardinals defeated Cajon for the first time in 18 years en route to winning their first league title since 1993. San Bernardino, the No. 6 seed in the D2A playoffs, broke their streak of futility against Cajon with an 83-57 win Jan. 19 and extended their winning streak over the Cowboys with a 79-71 win last Monday. San Bernardino has now won 18 SAL games in a row dating back to last year.
Other boys basketball teams with long league winning streaks include Eisenhower and Summit, who won undefeated league titles in the Citrus Belt and Sunkist Leagues, respectively. The Eagles have now won 32 CBL games in a row dating back to the 2008-09 season while the SkyHawks have won 29 games in the Sunkist League dating back to 08-09.
Rialto and Mesa Grande Academy each notched No. 1 seed, with the Knights getting the top seed in Division 2-AA and Mesa Grande doing the game in D6-AA. Redlands Adventist Academy came through with the No. 2 seed in D6-A as well.

It didn't take long for the girls basketball season to get going, as two tournaments - Rialto's "Jam the Gym" and the Big Daddy Tournament, tipped off today.
Both tournaments will have their championship games Saturday, with the Jam the Gym title game being played at 6:30 p.m. at Rialto High School while the Big Daddy Gold Division championship game will be played at 6 p.m. at Notre Dame High School in Riverside. Joining Rialto in the Jam the Gym are Palm Springs, Upland, Ayala, Serrano, Fontana, Corona Centennial, Chino Hills, Victor Valley, Riverside North, Patriot and Ganesha High Schools.
The Big Daddy Tournament is a 18-team tournament with a Gold Division and a Green Division. The Gold will feature Cajon, Eisenhower, Lake Elsinore Lakeside, Moreno Valley, Temecula Valley, Vista Murrieta, Riverside Arlington, Redlands, Sultana and Riverside Poly. The Green Division will have Riverside Ramona, Banning, Corona, Mesa Grande Academy, Notre Dame, Norte Vista, Aquinas and Colton High Schools. Aquinas, Moreno Valley and Notre Dame will all host the tournament.
Also on the horizon is the Arroyo Valley Tournament, which will be held Dec. 6-10 at Arroyo Valley and Pacific High Schools. Teams involved in the tournament, which is straight bracket format, are Valley View, San Bernardino, Riverside Poly, Oak Hills, San Gorgonio, Rim of the World, Pacific, Patriot, Cajon, Kaiser, Fontana, Corona, Bloomington, Redlands, Arroyo Valley and Rubidoux. The title game will be held at Arroyo Valley at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 10.
Two months before the basketball season is set to tip off, the Ontario High School athletic department is looking to fill its varsity girls head coaching position. The position is open to in-district and out-of-district candidates and inquires can be sent via e-mail to OHS athletic director Rhonda Purwin at rhonda_purwin@cjuhsd.net.
The previous coach of the Jaguars was Bryan Grant, who led Ontario to an 18-5 record last year and a second-place finish in the Mt. Baldy League. Grant was 34-35 in three seasons at Ontario, leading the Jaguars to playoff berths the last two years.
Ayala didn't waste much time replacing the retired Mel Sims, as it promoted newly-hired assistant coach Amy Campbell to take the head job last week.
Campbell, 29, has been a jack of all trades in the Chino Valley Unified School District, serving as the head coach for the Chino High girls basketball team, an assistant coach for Ayala's CIF-championship winning softball team and a teacher at Magnolia Junior High School. She's happy that she only has to wear one hat this upcoming year.
"I just got hired as a social studies teacher, so I'll be able to stay on this campus," Campbell said. "I've been willing to teach or coach anywhere where I'm needed, but it will be great to just wear red and black."
Campbell was hired initially to be the coach-in-waiting to Sims, 69, who has constructed Ayala into one of the elite programs in Southern California, taking over after a year or two under Sims' tutelage. But Sims' retirement accelerated the timetable, though he will consult with Campbell on the side while she gets her feet wet.
"We were going to have Amy gradually take over the program from Mel, but Mel's daughter is going to be a senior next year and plays soccer," Ayala athletic director Steve Martin said. "Basketball and soccer season run at the same time, so Mel decided to step down. Once he did, Amy was our No. 1 target."
Campbell was offered the job after the Bulldogs defeated Bonita in the CIF-SS Division 3 softball semifinals. Martin came up to her after the game while she was in celebration mode and she eagerly accepted.
More than a week later, the eagerness hasn't faded.
"I'm ready to go," Campbell said. "We start Monday and I can't wait to get this thing started. I'm hoping to continue the great things Mel brought here and add a few wrinkles of my own."
Eight San Bernardino County players make up the list of CIF-SS All-Stars who will face off against the L.A. City Section All-Stars on Saturday April 24 at 5 p.m. at El Camino College.
Making the team are Etiwanda center Jasmine Bernard, Colony forward Te'onna Campbell, Ayala forward Rhema Gardner, Ayala guard Ariel Marsh, Miller forward Cassandra Mitchell, Chino Hills guard Ericka Norman, Summit guard and All-Sun Player of the Year Adrienne Thomas and Miller guard Chloe Wells. Wells and Mitchell did not play this year, as they were forced to sit out due to CIF-SS transfer rules.
Not that it's much of a shock, but LaTrina Duncan was officially named the permanent head girls basketball coach at Summit High School yesterday according to a text I received from her this morning. This was pretty much assumed to be Summit's course of action once Alexis Barile - who went on maternity leave in January - said that she wasn't going to reassume the position, but it's finally official.
Duncan, the all-Sun girls basketball coach of the year, was an assistant under Chris Stephens at Chaffey College and Los Osos High School prior to taking a job as Summit's JV coach this past offseason. She took over the SkyHawks on January 7 when Barile went into labor with twins 10 weeks premature and led Summit to a Sunkist League championship, the Division 1-A finals and the Division I SoCal regional semifinals.
The Yucaipa High School head football coaching position, which opened up in early February when John Hallenbeck was removed, is inching closer to being filled.
Thunderbirds athletic director Mark Anderson indicated that a series of interviews will be held April 23, with a possible recommendation coming from them.
"We have been patient with the process to make sure that we get the best possible candidates," Anderson said. "We'll sit down April 23 and see where we are at."
Yucaipa also is looking for a new girls basketball coach, as Anna Collins stepped down following the season. Collins, a newlywed, was teaching in Grand Terrace and the commute to Yucaipa was too much according to Anderson.
The inaugural East/West all-star girls basketball game, to be held April 23 at 6:30 p.m. at Whittier College, has a pretty substantial local flavor, as five county players have been added to the East's roster. San Bernardino guard Jasmine Ray, Summit guard Adrienne Thomas, Alta Loma forward Sylvia Shepherd, Colony guard Te'onna Campbell and Upland Christian forward Destinee Duncan are all scheduled to play as of now. The website highlighting the event can be accessed here.

These were e-mailed to me last Thursday by Arroyo Valley athletic director Matt Howell, but I was in Las Vegas and out of e-mail access. Plus, my typing could have been ugly after spending afternoons at various sportsbooks watching my brackets spontaneously combust.
So I apologize for the delay and here they are.

Unlike the boys, there's not a team ranked No. 1 in the girls right now - a marked departure from the past couple years. There are a lot of top 5 teams though, led by Ayala's No. 3 ranking in Division I-A.
After having the appeal of the CIF-Southern Section's ruling which made Miller senior girls basketball players Chloe Wells and Cassandra Mitchell ineligible denied last Thursday, the parents of Chloe Wells is trying to get the ACLU involved as part of a possible lawsuit.
The ruling on Wells - who starred for Miller's CIF championship teams as a freshman and sophomore before moving out to North Carolina for her junior season - and Mitchell was handed down by the CIF-SS offices in November, as they denied the hardship waiver for Wells and Mitchell, who moved with Chloe to Southern California over the summer. After taking it to the CIF-State appeals court, Chloe's mother Nyla is trying the ACLU route.
"It's just a shame what they are doing," Nyla Wells said. "It's not right and we are going to fight it. Cassandra left a bad home situation to come out here and get to play and hopefully, get a scholarship. How they can say she's not a hardship is beyond me."
The Wells have just started the process of getting the ACLU involved, as they have presented their case to the organization's lawyers. From there, the ACLU will decide whether they want to take on the case, a process that takes roughly a week according to Nyla Wells.
"We feel its gotten to the point where the civil rights of Chloe and Cassandra have been violated," Wells said. "Hopefully they'll take on the case and we can proceed with our next move."
An investigation into allegations of recruiting made by the family of former player Diamond Smith in the Rialto girls basketball program and head coach Michael Anderson has found no wrongdoing according to Rialto principal Andres Luna.
A source within the Rialto Unified School District indicate that the findings regarding the inquiry into the Rialto High School girls basketball program will be released shortly after Superintendent Dr. Harold Cebrun returns from a conference in Monterey later this week.
The inquiry into the program and head coach Michael Anderson started after the family of former player Diamond Smith met with school and district officials about problems between Smith, a standout player for the Knights for three years, and Anderson -- who led Rialto to a share of the Citrus Belt League championship last season and the CBL lead going into Wednesday night's game at Redlands East Valley. Smith has transferred to Carter since the meeting according to her mother, Betsy Wilson.
Wilson accused Anderson of recruiting from outside of RHS' enrollment zone, a charge that prompted the inquiry. However, Anderson has gotten support from parents of players still within the Rialto program.
"Michael Anderson is a great person and has done a lot for my daughter and the Rialto community," said Kimberly Dobard, mother of junior forward Brittani Walker. "He is a great teacher and the team has done great since he's been the coach. He's given my daughter opportunities that she might not have had."
The CIF-SS office, through e-mail correspondence with Director of Communciations Thom Simmons, has indicated that it will wait for RUSD's findings before deciding whether or not to launch an inquiry of its own.
"Neither Rialto High School, Rialto Unified School District nor the family involved has asked us to intercede in any way at this time," Simmons said via e-mail. "As is standard operating procedure whenever an accusation is brought against a school or a member of that school's athletic department we allow the school the opportunity to do their due diligence first and only intercede if their is a feeling that more needs to done whether that be in terms of investigations and/or sanctions applied. It is my understanding that the school district is conducting their own investigation and we will respect their process."
After an inexplicable drop in last week's rankings, Cajon moved up to No. 4 in the Division I-AA poll, setting up a meeting with D1-A No. 2 Summit Saturday in Fontana. Besides that, it was pretty much the status quo as far as county teams are concerned.
Rialto junior guard Janae Sharpe is 16 points short of setting the Rialto High School scoring record for both boys and girls, according to a phone call from Knights assistant coach Larry Claunch. Sharpe, who has 1,538 points in 2.5 seasons with the Knights, will likely break the record tonight, as the Knights play Carter.
The record is held by Okeme Oziwo, a 1996 graduate of RHS who went on to star at Arizona State - where he recovered from a devastating car crash to become a starter for the Sun Devils - and the Harlem Globetrotters after his time with the Knights. Tonight's game is at 6 p.m. at Rialto High School.
This week's installment of the rankings sees Summit and Ayala ranked No. 2 and No. 3 in Division I-A and Etiwanda leading a contingent of county teams in DI-AA with a No. 4 ranking. Cajon strangely fell from No. 5 to No. 8 in that division despite not losing a game.
The Ayala Extravaganza, one of the top one-day girls basketball showcases in the Southland will start at 9 a.m. Saturday at Ayala HS and have nine different games going on throughout the day into the evening. One of the featured matchups will take place at 3 p.m., as two-time defending CIF champion Cajon takes on Harbor City Narbonne -- one of the top teams in the Los Angeles City Section. The Cowgirls are currently ranked No. 8 in the CIF-SS Division I-AA polls.
Ayala, the No. 3 team in DI-A, plays DI-AA No. 6 Lynwood at 6 p.m. while Chino Hills plays Perris in a matchup of teams ranked in D1-A at 4:30 p.m. Alta Loma starts off the proceedings with a 9 a.m. matchup against Pasadena Blair.
The complete schedule for the Extravaganza, with all games held at Ayala High School:

When I was covering the REV-Redlands boys basketball game tonight I overhead the REV public address announcer announcing that Wildcats senior girls basketball player Dreanna Underwood set the school record for career points scored last night in REV's 50-43 victory over Miller on Tuesday night.
Underwood, a four-year starter who is averaging 18.1 points per game for REV, took a bit of a breather Wednesday against Redlands, only scoring eight points in the Wildcats' 52-35 victory. But breathers have obviously been rare for her.
Rialto High School, in coordination with the Rialto Unified School District, is looking into the girls basketball program after allegations of misconduct against head coach Michael Anderson by the family of former player Diamond Smith.
Local high school girls basketball starts off with a bang with Rialto's "Jam the Gym" Classic, which will run through Saturday at RHS. Hosting the tournament is Rialto, which split the Citrus Belt League title with Redlands last year and return much of that team, namely junior guard Janae Sharpe and senior guard Diamond Smith.
Also playing in the tournament was Chino Hills, led by Sacred Heart signee Ericka Norman, San Bernardino - led by senior guard Jasmine Ray - and La Puente Bishop Amat.

The transfer of girls basketball players Chloe Wells and Cassandra Mitchell to Miller from Apex (N.C.) High School was denied by the CIF earlier this week according to Miller athletic director Dwight Berry, leaving the seniors ineligible for varsity play.
"They originally approved the transfer, but someone complained and I guess they decided to re-evaluate their decision," Berry said. "We knew that we would have to file the paperwork with CIF and we figured once it was approved, everything was fine. But they found something I guess that made them change their decision."
The blow to the Miller girls basketball program, which was 0-21 last season, is huge, as Wells was a two-time all-CIF and all-Sun first-team player for the Rebels as a freshman and sophomore, leading Miller to consecutive CIF titles before moving to North Carolina last offseason. The 5-foot-7 guard signed with Duke University late last week.
Mitchell, who is living with the Wells family according to Berry, is also no slouch, as she was second behind Wells in scoring for Apex last season.
The next step in the process is for the Wells family to appeal the decision, something that it will most assuredly do. Efforts to reach the Wells family have been unsuccessful to this point.
"It's not over," Berry said. "They can appeal to a panel, to a single arbiter or take it all the way to the state office. It's in the family's hands right now - I can provide them paperwork but that's about it at this point."
This isn't a unique situation for Miller, which went through a similar situation with football player David Dash last offseason. Dash, a senior running back on the Rebels, was originally banned from varsity play for two years after transferring from Fontana High School, but was cleared to play by a court order after appealing the decision.
Got an e-mail earlier today from REV athletic director Rhonda Fouch mentioning a couple more signings of REV athletes to scholarships. According to the e-mail, softball player Leanne Lopez signed with Cal State Northridge while girls basketball player Shelby Kaenel signed with Cal Baptist.
One season after making it to the CIF-SS Division VI-A championship game, Packinghouse Christian has decided not to field a girls basketball team for the upcoming season.
With five players having graduated from last year's squad and a sixth out with a torn knee ligament, the Bears were reduced to three players, which necessitated the cancellation of the season.
"It's a very sad thing," Packinghouse Christian athletic director Paul Verhoeven said. "You never want to have to take that kind of step, but we also owed it to our opponents and the tournaments we were scheduled to play in to have a decision in the appropriate amount of time."
The Bears went around campus looking for players to fill the spots before making the decision to cancel last week. The boys team, which consists of six players, will play this season.
"One of the great things about a small school is the ability to jump right in and be able to play," Verhoeven said. "It's too bad more students didn't take advantage of the opportunity."
The 2009-2010 boys and girls playoff divisions were released Tuesday with a few notable changes. One of the most notable dealt with Hesperia, which dropped from Division I-AA to Division II-A in both genders. Redlands East Valley also dropped in both genders, moving down from I-AA to I-A.
Another notable team that moved up was the Colony girls basketball team. After winning the D3-A CIF title two years ago and the D1-A title last year, the Titans will have a chance to win a third title in a third different division, as they've moved up to D1-AA. Summit also made a leap up, moving from D2-A to D1-A.
Other notable girls teams to move up include Fontana (D1-A to D1-AA), Colton and Ontario (D2-AA to D1-A) and Alta Loma (D2-A to D2-AA). Boys teams to move up include Los Osos (D1-A to D1-AA), Colton and Ontario (D2-AA to D1-A), Yucaipa (D2-A to D1-A) and Summit (D2-A to D2-AA).
Of the new schools, Oak Hills was placed in D4-AA in both genders while Citrus Valley was put in D4-A.
With the fall signing period coming up next month, basketball recruiting is starting to pick up. Three county players have made verbal commitments to Division I schools.
Ayala senior Rhema Gardner verbally committed to UCLA earlier this week according to ESPN.com, joining her older sister and former All-Sun first-team selection Rebekah Gardner. The 6-foot-2 Gardner averaged 12.9 points and 11.1 rebounds for the Bulldogs last season.
Chino Hills guard Derek Brown also made his choice according to Scout.com and picked San Jose State after an official visit last month. Brown, a 6-foot-2 senior, won Sierra League MVP honors by averaging 16.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game.
But it wasn't just seniors who committed this week. Etiwanda junior swingman Byron Wesley, an all-Sun first-team selection at Cajon last year, committed to USC according to Rivals.com. The 6-foot-5 Wesley averaged 18.7 points and 7.4 rebounds as a sophomore.
Summit senior forward Maiya Michel has become the third SkyHawk girls basketball player in the last two seasons to commit to a Division I college, verbally committed to the University of Denver after an official visit to the school a couple weeks ago.
Michel, who averaged 11.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game last year, joins Meghin Williams (Nebraska) and Adrienne Thomas (Arizona State) as Summit Division I basketball players.
"I'm definitely spoiled," Summit coach Alexis Barile said. "I came into this school and these type of players are here for me. It's a great thing to have as a coach."
San Bernardino High School girls basketball coach Damian Staricka has been put on administrative leave by the San Bernardino Unified School District according to Linda Bardere, the district's Director of Communications.
Cassandra Williams has been named the interim coach while Staricka is on leave, which is the result of an internal investigation according to Bardere.
"The investigation is a personnel matter that is separate from his duties as a basketball coach," Bardere said. "He's been put on leave until that investigation concludes and he is re-evaluated."
Bardere did not know when Staricka was placed on leave. At Tuesday's school board meeting, a personnel report indicated that Staricka had been approved as a coach at SBHS for the 2009-10 season as part of a standard annual review by the school district.
Also discussed at the Tuesday school board meeting was air conditioning for the Cajon High School gymnasium. A measure for renovations of the high school included air conditioning for the gym, but unforeseen money spent on asbestos removal now leaves the gym, without AC.
"They did a lot of renovations first that weren't really necessary, like new doors to classrooms," said Cajon girls basketball coach Mark Lehman, who spoke in front of the school board Tuesday. "But the asbestos discovery sidetracked the project, and by the time they got to the gym, apparently there was no more money."
That leaves the gym a sweatbox, according to Lehman, as vents were sealed up as part of the yet-to-be-completed insertion of air conditioning, allowing even less air in and out of the facility. He appealed for a rearranging of funds to complete the project, something the school board said it would look into, according to Lehman.
The Cajon girls basketball team, fresh off consecutive CIF-SS titles, looks to be in good shape despite graduating star players Layshia Clarendon and Darshae Burnside, as the Cowgirls have advanced to the finals of the Los Angeles Summer Watts games. The Cowgirls, the only IE team in the field, will play Los Angeles Washington at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Southwestern College.
After working out this past weekend at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Cajon senior guard Layshia Clarendon was named as one of 14 finalists for the Under-19 National Team Sunday. Clarendon, a 5-9 point guard who will play for California next season, will return to Colorado Springs July 9 to compete for a spot on the final roster, which will consist of 12 players. The 14 finalists were culled from a pool of 27 high school and college players that tried out this past weekend.
The United States' Under-19 National Team then will travel to Thailand for the 2009 FIBA World Championships, which start July 23.in Bangkok. Past standouts that have played on this team include Lisa Leslie, Rebecca Lobo and Don Lugo alum Diana Taurasi.
Cajon senior guard Layshia Clarendon continues to rub her elbows with the elite in girls basketball, as she is in Colorado Springs currently working out with top high school and college players at the U.S. Olympic Training facility according to an e-mail sent by Cowgirls coach Mark Lehman.
Clarendon is among a handful of high school players chosen to compete with college players for spots on the Junior National Basketball Team, which will compete in the World Championship Games this summer. More information on the event can be found at www.usabasketball.com.
The one in the paper is a quoteless, shorter version due to deadlines, but this one can be found at www.sbsun.com/sports as well as here.
Loma Linda Academy is the only local team in the Division V-AA playoffs and will play at No. 2 seed Morningside Wednesday. In Division VI-AA, No. 2 Hesperia Christian gets a bye and plays the winner of the Glendale Adventist Academy-Thacher game Saturday. Other games of note include The Grove at No. 10 Ribet Academy, La Verne Lutheran at No. 11 LA Adventist, Redlands Adventist at No. 12 Highland Hall, Apple Valley Christian at No. 5 Lone Pine, No. 9 Hillcrest Christian at Victor Valley Christian and Boron at No. 16 Trona.
Rim of the World gets a tough draw in the first round of the Division IV-A playoffs, as it plays at No. 1 Orange Lutheran Wednesday. Big Bear is set up to play the winner of that game in the second round if the Bears win at home against No. 16 Montclair Prep.
Division IV-AA sees Yucca Valley play at No. 14 Ontario Christian and San Dimas play at No. 10 Bishop Amat.
On the girls side, Twentynine Palms grabbed the No. 8 seed in Division IV-A and will host Flintridge Sacred Heart Thursday. Big Bear also plays at Los Angeles Baptist in that division. Yucca Valley was named the No. 8 seed in D4-AA and hosts Ridgecrest Burroughs, while San Dimas hosts No. 13 Calabasas.
Diamond Ranch grabbed the top seed in the D3-A playoffs, where it will host Anaheim Magnolia Wednesday. Miramonte League rival Bonita grabbed the No. 6 seed and hosts Corona del Mar.
Other locals in the D3A bracket are No. 12 Twentynine Palms, which hosts Mountain View, Barstow, which hosts No. 13 Brea Olinda, and Apple Valley, which hosts No. 7 Cerritos. Granite Hills is the only local team the DIII-AA. The Cougars will host No. 9 Riverside Ramona.
The D3-AA bracket on the girls side sees two local seeds, as No. 4 Diamond Ranch has a bye and will play the Loara-Segestrom winner Saturday, while No. 11 San Bernardino will host Beaumont Thursday.
Barstow received the No. 7 seed and will host Heritage Thursday, while No. 12 Bonita will host Beckman.
The Summit girls basketball team received the No. 2 seed in the D2-A playoffs, only behind Mater Dei. The SkyHawks will host Lakeside on Thursday. Don Lugo also received a seed, as the No. 13 Conquistadores will host Riverside Patriot.
Other games of note are Alta Loma at No. 4 Norco and Eisenhower at No. 15 Jurupa Valley.
On the boys side, Eisenhower grabbed the No. 1 seed and a first-round bye in the process. Ike won't get its playoffs started until Friday, where it will play the winner of Westlake and No. 16 Santa Barbara.
Other seeded locals are No. 8 Summit, which hosts Mark Keppel, No. 10 Ayala, which plays at San Jacinto, No. 13 Damien, which plays at Baldwin Park, and No. 15 Yucaipa, which hosts Mira Costa. Don Lugo also hosts No. 14 Peninsula.
Nothing too crazy on the boys side, as there aren't any local teams seeded. However, San Bernardino was included in the bracket as an at-large team and will play at No. 14 La Serna Wednesday. Alta Loma, behind star junior J.J. O'Brien, plays at No. 9 Huntington Beach Edison.
Other games of local interest include Ontario at No. 3 Glendora and No. 10 West Ranch at Serrano.
On the girls side, Sultana notched itself the No. 14 seed and will host Temecula Valley Thursday. Other games of note are Serrano at No. 15 Anaheim Katella, No. 6 Huntington Beach at Kaiser and Ontario at No. 4 Moreno Valley Vista del Lago.
The Cajon boys basketball team didn't get a No. 2 seed like their female counterparts did, but the Cowboys weren't far off, as they were named the No. 4 seed in the Division I-A pairings released moments ago. Cajon hosts Corona Wednesday.
Chino Hills was the next seeded local team, grabbing the No. 8 seed. The Huskies will host Riverside Poly and could eventually be placed against No. 1 Murrieta Valley in the third round next week. Los Osos was made the No. 12 seed and hosts Whittier California, while other local games include Rancho Cucamonga at No. 7 Hemet West Valley and No. 14 Perris at San Gorgonio.
On the girls side, Colony was named the No. 1 seed, one of two County teams among the top 4 seeds. The Titans host Capistrano Valley Thursday while No. 4 Ayala hosts Fontana.
Other local seeds are No. 8 Rancho Cucamonga, which hosts Riverside King, and No. 10 Chino Hills, which hosts Yucaipa. San Gorgonio will play at No. 12 Murrieta Valley while Chino plays at No. 3 Moreno Valley Canyon Springs.
Today is basketball pairings day, and the first of those pairings was released moments ago with Division I-AA boys and girls. Starting with the ladies, Cajon grabbed the No. 2 seed behind No. 1 Long Beach Poly, which was expected. The Cowgirls will start off hosting Redondo Union, the third-place team out of the Bay League, on Thursday.
Other seeded local girls teams are No. 5 Etiwanda, which hosts Diamond Bar, No. 12 Silverado, which hosts Downey Warren, No. 13 Rialto, which hosts Riverside La Sierra, and No. 15 Redlands, which plays at Dana Hills. Other games of note are No. 14 Vista Murrieta at Los Osos, Hesperia at No. 9 Palmdale Knight and Redlands East Valley at No. 11 Oxnard Pacifica.
On the boys side, Etiwanda leads the locals as a No. 5 seed. The Baseline League champs will host Lakewood Wednesday. Other seeded County teams are No. 7 Colony, which hosts Diamond Bar, No. 10 Redlands, which hosts Arroyo Valley, and No. 16 Upland, which plays at Desert Sky champion Silverado. The Upland-Silverado winner will almost certainly get the unenviable task of playing No. 1-seed Santa Ana Mater Dei in the second round Friday. Miller also has a tough matchup coming up, as it'll host No. 3 Compton Dominguez. Hesperia also hosts Corona Santiago.
I received an email from Summit girls basketball coach Alexis Barile earlier this afternoon saying that the SkyHawks will be wearing pink uniforms for their home game against Bloomington at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 10. The SkyHawks will be "GOING PINK" in an effort to fight breast cancer.
The pink jerseys are being donated by Ken's Sporting Girls and Summit is expected to get pink items donated by Nike. The proceeds and donations taken will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for fighting breast cancer in honor of former N.C. State women's basketball coach Kay Yow, who passed away last week due to the disease. Summit also will be honoring community members that have survived or have lost someone to breast cancer.
Two of the top girls basketball teams in the County, Cajon and Etiwanda, will play each other at 3 p.m. Saturday at Staples Center as part of a tripleheader that includes the Clippers' game with the Milwaukee Bucks that night. The "Downtown Showdown" will start with a game between South Torrance and Palos Verdes at 1 p.m., followed by Cajon and Etiwanda at 3 and the Bucks-Clippers game at 7:30.
The 13-0 Cowgirls, the CIF-SS Division II-A champions a year ago, are led by 5-foot-9 senior point guard Layshia Clarendon, who has signed a letter of intent to play at California, and 6-2 senior center Darshae Burnside, who has signed with Arkansas. Clarendon averages 20.5 points, 8.8 assists, 8.5 rebounds and 3.9 steals per game while Burnside averages 19.8 points and 18.5 rebounds per game.
Etiwanda comes in with a 10-5 record but played the Cowgirls tough in the championship game of the Magnolia Classic on Dec. 20, falling 60-58. The Eagles are led by senior guard Amber Williams - who averages 17.5 points and 4.3 steals per game - junior guard Natalia Hawthorne (11.8 points, 3.7 steals) and 6-1 junior center Jasmine Bernard (10.4 points, 8.5 rebounds).
Tickets to all three games are $20 for upper-deck seats and $43 for lower-level seats prior to Saturday. On Saturday, they'll be selling for $25 and $50, respectively. You can also click this link or call Rob Strikwerda at 213.742.7541 to order by phone, or via email at RAS@Clippers.com
Cajon coach Mark Lehman just confirmed to me that senior guard Layshia Clarendon and senior post Darshae Burnside were signing national letters of intent with California and Arkansas, respectively.
"I think we pretty much knew this day was coming," Lehman said. "They came in their freshman year and started right away. With their talent, you knew that they had a shot to have this happen for them."
Cajon is trying to set up an assembly in front of the student body for the formal signing sometime in the next week, as the Fall Signing Period starts Wednesday and runs through Nov. 19. Lehman indicated that a date hasn't been picked as of yet, but a few were under consideration.
The 5-foot-9 Clarendon, the CIF-SS Division II-A player of the year, was a first-team all-state selection by calhisports.com and was the Sun's All-County Most Valuable Player this past season. Clarendon averaged 20.7 points, 7.5 rebounds, 6.7 assists and four steals per game for the Cowgirls, who won their first-ever CIF title last March with a 51-47 victory over Ayala.
"It feels pretty great right now," said Clarendon, who chose from a final three of Cal, UCLA and Arizona State. "It's one of those things that I always hoped would happen, but I wasn't sure if it would come together like this. Cal was a perfect place for me and I feel as if everything is falling into place."
Burnside, a first-team all-state, all-CIF and all-County selection a year ago, averaged 15.5 points, 16.1 rebounds and 4.0 blocked shots per game. She has quickly climbed up the all-time state rebounding leaders, with Lehman saying that she is roughly 160 rebounds away from being the leading rebounder in state history.
I only got a brief word in with Burnside before her cell phone cut out, basically me congratulating her and her saying "Thanks." I guess that's as good of confirmation as any until I can speak with her more.
The new basketball playoff divisions were released today. Gone are the league-based divisions - where every team in a league is assigned to the same division. Instead, it looks to be a mostly individual, enrollment-based dividing process.
Performance isn't as much of a factor, but was factored in, which explains some differences between the boys and girls divisions. So if this looks funky, that's why. For the constraints of space, I'll just list the teams in the Sun and Bulletin areas.
