Marymount defeats pesky Wildcats

It's not a four-peat for REV, as Marymount grabbed the fourth game 25-23 to win the CIF-SS Division 1-A championship, but the Wildcats made Marymount work, leading for much of the fourth game.

A service ace by setter Lauren Greskovics-Fuller ended the match, which is ironic considering Marymount's 21 service errors in the match. Things aren't done for the Wildcats (29-5) though, as they'll start play in the Division I state playoffs starting Tuesday.

Final stats will come in a bit.

REV isn't dead yet

The Wildcats aren't going to give up the CIF title without a fight, as they defeated Marymount 25-20 in game 3 to continue the match. The Wildcats won the last six points of the game, as Alyssa Mason ended it with two blocks and a kill on game point.

Mason had a good game defensively, compiling six of her seven blocks. Krista Vansant also got going offensively, notching seven of her 14 kills. Peyton Moyles has 17 assists while Cherylain Dizon has five kills and four blocks.

Kathleen Harris leads Marymount with 15 kills while Lauren Greskovics-Fuller has 28 assists.

Marymount up in game 2

A 7-0 run early in the game paved the way for the Sailors to take game 2, as Marymount never looked back from the resulting 11-7 lead in defeating REV 25-17 to come within one game of the CIF-SS Division 1-A championship. Their service game gave REV issues in game two, as Victoria Shepherd had four aces while Atlanta Moye-McLaren and Carly Wagenbach also had aces.

REV got a early lift from Cherylain Dizon, who had two kills and three blocks in the game, but have scuffled otherwise. Krista Vansant has seven kills and two digs while Peyton Moyles has eight assists and two kills.

Marymount takes game 1

Taylor Bantle finished off the game for the Sailors with consecutive kills, giving Marymount a 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead in games. The Sailors have 15 kills to REV's 7, as the Wildcats have struggled to get their attack going.

Krista Vansant has six kills to lead the Wildcats while Peyton Moyles has five assists. Libero Emily Hargrove has three digs as well.

Marymount up 23-19

The Sailors have been pretty balanced offensively in taking the early lead, as Manon-Greskovics-Fuller has four kills while Kathleen Harris and Atlanta Moye-McLaren have three kills each. Setter Lauren Greskovics-Fuller has nine assists.

Krista Vansant has six of REV's seven kills. Service errors have plagued both teams, as Marymount has five errors while REV has two.

Live blogging from REV volleyball

In what has become an annual rite of late fall, the Redlands East Valley girls volleyball team is going for its fourth straight CIF championship in about two minutes here, facing Marymount. The Wildcats are actually underdogs, as Marymount is the No. 1 seed to REV's No. 2. I'll try to keep you updated, though being situated by the roof here at Cypress College isn't the greatest situation for internet access ever.

Mountain View holds on

Oak Hills wasn't really able to make a last-minute charge, as a header attempt off a throw in the 76th minute that went wide was their best chance to tie the game. Mountain View holds on 2-1 and repeats as D6 champs while Oak Hills falls just short in an otherwise outstanding season.

Rivera puts Oak Hills on the board

The Bulldogs still have life in the D6 championship game, as Miguel Rivera's goal in the 69th minute has Oak Hills within 2-1. Rivera's goal was a rebound off a header by Sergio Romero which Mountain View keeper Oswaldo Martinez deflected. Rivera got the rebound and delivered a bullet that Martinez had no shot at.

2-1 Mountain View, 71st minute currently.

Mountain View scores again

The Vikings took advantage of a corner kick in the 57th minute to take a commanding 2-0 lead over Oak Hills. Fabian Villasenor passed to Manuel Garcia off the corner, who shot the ball toward the net. Oak Hills keeper Broderic Capps saved that, and the rebound shot by Carlos Zarate, but the rebound off Zarate's shot was put in by Pablo Tellez.

2-0 Vikings, now in the 61st minute.

Mountain View goes ahead

An own goal by Oak Hills gives Mountain View the first goal of the D6 title game in the 46th minute. A throw-in from Fabian Villasenor into the penalty box in the 46th minute was headed by Jesus Mariscal off the shoulder of Oak Hills midfielder Brett Croft into the goal, giving the Vikings the 1-0 lead.

Now in the 48th minute.

Apologize for the lateness of this post, but logistical problems delayed the game blog a bit. The first half of the Division 6 title game here at Warren High School was pretty even, with each team having one good chance in the first half. But now things are tied up 0-0 going into the second half.

Sultana left no doubt tonight, as Brianna Gonzalez scored twice and Britney Roberts had a goal and an assist for the victorious Sultans, who felt like this year's victory redeemed the close, penalty-kick nature of last year's triumph against Granite Hills.

"This was a lot less nerve-wracking," Sultana coach Daniel Polmounter said. "We proved a point tonight. All we've been hearing is how Granite is going to run the score up on us. We just played hard the entire time."

Granite Hills had its chances at times and was only outshot 11-9, but the Cougars fell in the title game for the third straight year. In four title-game appearances since 2006, all Granite Hills has to show for it is a split title in 2006 back when the CIF awarded two titles in the event of regulation ties.

Cougars coach Mike Bradbury didn't want to talk, instead asking Daily Press reporter Matthew Peters and I to direct the story toward Sultana. That story will be available in a couple hours online and in the paper tomorrow.

Gonzalez scores again for Sultans

It doesn't look like Sultana will need to go to penalty kicks to win the CIF title this year, as Brianna Gonzalez scored her second goal of the game to give the Sultana a commanding 3-0 lead with 15 minutes left. The goal was the result of some pretty heavy Sultana pressure over the course of 3-4 minutes, with Gonzalez ending it off a pass from Britney Roberts.

Looks like they'll be partying in Hesperia tonight. Barring another goal, this will be my last post until the post-game wrapup.

Sultans tack on another

Sultana scored in the 52nd minute to up its lead to 2-0, as Britney Roberts took a throw-in from Megan Morgenstern and powered a shot past Katy Nearhoff.

Up to that point, Granite Hills had kept the ball in the Sultana end during the second half and came up with a golden scoring opportunity in the 53rd minute immediately after the goal, as Rayna Speight had a shot at an open goal with Sultan keeper Vaitea Tahauri out of position. But Brianna Gonzalez came over and cleared the ball out of danger.

2-0 Sultana with just over 24 minutes left.

Second half just starting

About to get going again here at Warren High with Sultana holding a 1-0 lead on Granite Hills. Granite Hills actually had a 5-4 lead on shots, with Sultana goalkeeper Vaitea Tahauri making a diving save on a BK Smith shot in the 33rd minute shortly before the Sultans scored.

After biding its time for much of the first half, Sultana struck for a goal in the 38th minute, as junior midfielder Brianna Gonzalez ended a flurry of shots on the Granite Hills goal by punching one past Cougars' keeper Katy Nearhoff.

Gonzalez's goal was the last of three rapid-fire shots at Nearhoff, which started with a shot by Brianna Johanson that was saved by Nearhoff. The rebound went to Gonzalez, who had a shot deflected by Nearhoff before scoring on the rebound. The rally was started by a cross by Kelly Keyes.

Halftime horn just sounded with the Sultans up 1-0.

Got some breaking news, so I had to break up the live game blog for a sec. But we are back.

Granite Hills has had its share of chances thus far in its scoreless Division 4 title-game matchup with Sultana, coming up with three corner kicks in the last 12 minutes. The first one, off the foot of Ashley Ibarra in the 15th minute, almost resulted in a goal, as it just flew past the head of Bree Bodiford at the left post. Kristine Pasek also an an opportunity to score again in the 14th minute for the Cougars, as she ripped a shot off the crossbar.

Sultana has not registered an official shot, but has had a couple opportunities in the Granite zone.

Now in the 29th minute.

Granite Hills got the first real good scoring chance in the 4th minute, as Kristine Pasek had a point-blank shot on goal that Sultana goalkeeper Vaitea Tahauri stopped. Sultana had one good run at the net in the 5th minute, but didn't get a shot on goal.

12th minute now, still scoreless.

Live from Sultana-Granite Hills

The CIF-SS Division 4 girls soccer championship match between Sultana and Granite Hills is about to kick off here in a minute at Warren High School here in Downey. This is a rematch of their epic title match a year ago which the Sultans won on penalty kicks. Definitely a spirited crowd here from the High Desert here for the rematch.

I'll be keeping up as this goes. Never live blogged a soccer match, so bear with me a bit.

Santa Monica wins 69-63

Just finished writing on deadline - not too fun. But I probably am having more fun than Summit is right now, as the SkyHawks lost their second CIF championship game in the last three years. Free throws were the story, as Summit only made 10 of 20 while the Vikings drained 19 of 24.

Summit just called a timeout after Moriah Faulk hit a 3-pointer in the corner to put Santa Monica up 30-24. Thea Lemberger has 14 points and three assists to lead the Vikings, while Alyssa Domingo has eight points for Summit.

18-16 Santa Monica through 1

Bianka Baltizar made two free throws as the first quarter completed, giving the Vikings a narrow lead. Adrienne Thomas leads Summit with four points while Ana Brodie and Brooklynn Jackson each have three rebounds. Thea Lemberger has eight points to lead Santa Monica.

Second quarter about to start.

Yep, its late and yep, deadline is going to stink because of it. But I'll try my best to keep up with the Division 1-A girls basketball championship game between Summit and Santa Monica. And the wireless signal is kind of sketchy as well. But we'll see. Tip in a few seconds.

They are starting to play Queen's "We are the Champions" on the Upland side and for good reason, as Aaron Hale picked off Blake Loncar's desperation pass at the Highlander 14 with 17 seconds left to seal Upland's 19-7 win and head coach Tim Salter's 3rd CIF championship.

Upland gets some insurance

Gianni Olivas just scored on a 3-yard run with 2:01 left, putting Upland up 19-7 after the Highlanders missed the 2-point conversion. The Highlanders marched 78 yards on 10 plays, all on the ground, to get the score. So barring a miracle - and considering that the Los Osos offense hasn't scored on Upland in 7-plus quarters, that's exactly what it would take - Upland is set to win its first CIF crown since 2000.

Upland running it down

The Highlanders are looking to choke Los Osos out at this point, as they have used the running of Corey Sims, Walkeem McDonald and Gianni Olivas to move from their own 22 to the Los Osos 17 with 3:00 left. Sims just broke a 20-yard run to get the Highlanders in the red zone and Los Osos is in time-out mode. A score here pretty much seals this up with Upland up 13-7.

Big sack knocks Osos back

The Grizzlies used three runs by Cody Rogina to move to the Upland 41, but on 3rd-and-3, Upland defensive lineman Gregory Triay sacked Blake Loncar, forcing yet another Grizzly punt.

Fumble! Then Fumble! again.

A missed exchange between Kori Grant and Cody Rogina out of the "Wildcat" formation caused a Los Osos fumble, which Upland LB Anthony King recovered at the Grizzly 24.

After an illegal procedure penalty, Upland gave the ball right back, as Cole Chapman fumbled an exchange from Justin Nunes which Garrett Tobin recovered for the Grizzlies.

Los Osos ball down 13-7 with 8:48 left.

Upland has the ball 2nd-and-5 on its 44 as we head into the final period with the Highlanders up 13-7. The Highlanders forced Los Osos into a 3-and-out after scoring the touchdown, with Fred Green coming up with Upland's third sack of Blake Loncar.

Touchdown Upland!

Upland tight end Anthony King caught a 71-yard touchdown pass from Justin Nunes, putting the Highlanders up 13-7 after a missed extra point. On 3rd-and-2, Nunes hit King on a stop pattern at the 36. King dodged a tackler and outran the remainder of the Los Osos defense for the score.

13-7 Upland, 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Exchange of punts

Walkeem McDonald broke a 20-yard run on Upland's first play of the second half but crapped out after that, punting back to the Grizzlies. Los Osos proceeded to go 3-and-out on its possession, necessitating a punt.

Still 7-7, 3:10 left in the third.

Grizzlies stopped on first drive of 3rd

Los Osos got a couple first downs on its first drive of the second half, but a sack by Gianni Olivas on Blake Loncar left the Grizzlies in a 3rd-and-long situation which they could not convert.

Upland now has its first second-half possession with the game tied 7-7 and 8 minutes left in the third.

Tony Washington picked up a Corey Sims fumble out of mid-air and rumbled 41 yards for a touchdown, tying things up at 7-7 with 5:08 left. Upland called a toss to Sims, who was smacked by a couple of Los Osos defenders to force the fumble. The ball popped into Washington's arms and he did the rest, giving Los Osos its first score against Upland this season.

The Highlanders marched 76 yards in 9 plays, capped by a 7-yard touchdown run by Corey Sims on a toss sweep to take a 7-0 lead. Sims dominated the drive, rushing five times for 50 yards culminated with the touchdown. Justin Nunes also hit Kenneth Lawler on a 23-yard pass in the drive.

Los Osos started another drive with great field position, this time at its own 49, but wasn't able to do anything with it, going 3-and-out. Los Osos' starting field position thus far has been at its own 47, while Upland has started on average at its own 23.

The Grizzlies drove to the Upland 20 with their second possession before settiling for a 37-yard field goal attempt by Andres Magallon. But Upland linebacker Shane Pincin came in off the right side and blocked the kick, leaving the game scoreless with 1:25 left in the first quarter.

Los Osos got the first down after the recovered fumble but the Highlander D bowed up, forcing the Grizzlies to punt. Los Osos QB Blake Loncar was sacked by a host of Highlanders led by Marcus Gluck on a 2nd-and-5 from the Upland 45, killing whatever momentum the Grizzlies had built up from the turnover.

Upland is now punting on its 2nd possession. Scoreless tie, 4:44 left in the first.

Upland looked to have something going, as Justin Nunes hit Dilan Clark on a 21-yard pass down to the Grizzly 35. But Clark was stripped of the ball, which Connor Jahnke recovered and returned five yards to the 40.

Almost kickoff

I published my first entry a little late - must be having pre-game jitters of my own. Anyway, the national anthem was just sung by some Upland student and the teams are about to do the coin flip.

The student doing the national anthem had a good voice, but she seemed to miss a line near the end. We'll see if that's karma for the Highlanders. Kickoff to come in about 5 minutes.

Crowd is kind of sparse, leaving Lou Brewster to chime in with a quote from former Riverside Poly coach Mike Churchill - "Got to wait until cocktail hour is over before they show up."

Well, Grizzly and Highlander fans, its time to start chugging, as this one is about to get going.

20 minutes until Los Osos-Upland

Just got situated here at Citrus College, where it's perfect football weather - if you are from the Midwest. Its about 50 degrees with a light mist/fog and you can see your breath. I like seeing my breath, so its all good - though I wish I had remembered that Citrus had an open-air press box.

Anyway, according to esteemed colleague and boss Louis Brewster, there was a mini-trashtalk brouhaha at midfield between the two teams about 20 minutes ago. No punches or pushes - just good, old-fashioned woofing for a good old-fashioned Baseline League game.

Mitty wins state title

REV showed spunk as the match went on but Mitty was too much, taking the third and final game 25-21 to win 25-16, 25-18, 25-21. Kristina Graven ended it with a thunderous kill. Will have final stats in a bit.

Mitty repelling REV for now

The Wildcats took their first lead of the match at 5-4 and went up by as many as 11-9, but a 7-2 run by Mitty has the Monarchs up 16-13 looking to end this match. Brianna Potter has been revived in this game for REV with four kills and two blocks.

Mitty takes game two

REV got within three points, but Mitty recovered to take the second game 25-18 and now stand one game away from winning its second consecutive state title.

REV showing life

Mitty is still up 16-2, but the Wildcats, down by as many as 12-1, have scrapped back a bit and caused the Monarchs to call a timeout. Krista Vansant has four kills and an ace in game two.

6-0 Mitty in game two

Not looking so good for REV here as it calls a timeout to try to get composed.

Mitty takes game one

The Monarchs made short work of the Wildcats in game one with a convincing 25-16 victory. Rachel Williams had seven kills, including the last two for the Monarchs. We'll see if REV can pick it up and make Mitty work a bit harder than it has.

Mitty in control of game one

REV has played a little looser since I blogged last, but Mitty is up 20-14 and seems in control of game one. Libero Ryan Shaffer has flown around the court thus far while star outside hitter Rachel Williams, who has signed with Stanford, has four kills thus far.

Krista Vansant has four kills for REV while Danielle Newcombe has added two.

Mitty starts out fast

Archbishop Mitty is playing like it expects to roll, breaking out to a 10-5 lead. Setter Joan Caloiario already has five assists and two kills, while the Wildcats have been held to one kill thus far.

A little live volleyball action from UC Irvine up in this piece, as Redlands East Valley tries to get revenge for its D2 volleyball state title loss to San Jose Archbishop Mitty in a few minutes. If REV pulls off the upset, it will be akin to Buster Douglas knocking Mike Tyson out in Tokyo in 1990. Ok, that's hyperbole, but if the Wildcats defeat a 38-0 Monarch team, it would be quite the surprise.

Almost go time.

Three-peat!

Redlands East Valley won its third straight CIF title, closing out Corona del Mar 26-24 in the fourth game. The Sea Queens actually had game-point on REV, but three straight Krista Vansant kills sealed the match, making the Wildcats the second county girls volleyball team in history to win three straight CIF titles, joining Rim of the World - which won five straight titles from 1981-85.

I'll have final stats in a bit.

CDM within 1

A block-kill by Hailey Senske and a hitting error by Krista Vansant has Corona del Mar within one at 22-21. The Sea Queens have fought back despite an erratic serving game that has committed five errors in this game alone.

Corona del Mar scrapping

The Sea Queens are giving REV all it can handle in game four, scoring three of the last four points to move within 20-18. We'll see if REV can close it out.

15-10 REV

The Wildcats seem to have refound the mojo they had earlier in the game, as they are starting to pull away from the Sea Queens. Johnna Fouch had a big block-kill on Morgan Boukather while Alyssa Mason had a powerful kill right before a CDM timeout.

REV off to early game 4 lead

After CDM came out with five of the first six points, the Wildcats have scored eight of the last nine to take a 9-6 lead. Just like in game one, Brianna Potter provided a spark, with two kills and a block.

Going to game 4

REV was never really in game 3, as Corona del Mar cruised to the 25-15 victory. REV also lost game 4 in their semifinal victory over Bishop Montgomery after taking a 2-0 lead, so it'll be interesting to see how this next one plays out.

Corona del Mar stunted REV's attack, as the Wildcats were held to 7 kills in the third game after being brutally efficient in the prior two.

Game 4 about to start.

CDM creating space

The Sea Queens won seven points in a row after REV clawed back to tie it at 11, taking an 18-11 lead and making it look as if we are going to be here a little while longer.

Corona del Mar not going down quietly

The Sea Queens are playing for their CIF-SS lives and its evident in game 3, as they are up 11-7 on a REV team that's, quite frankly, used to losing game threes. REV has fallen in the third game after building a 2-0 lead in its last two matches. We'll see if the trend continues.

Yeah, the phantom point didn't matter

as REV closed out game two with a 25-17 victory. Krista Vansant ended it with a finesse bloop kill, even though she was tattooing CDM with most of her eight kills in the game. Besides that, the old cliche' "It's a team effort" is holding true for the Wildcats.

Let's see if REV can make it a short afternoon.

The Wildcats are rolling, up 17-8 on Corona del Mar in game two. It should be 18-7, but a serving error by CDM was inexplicably ruled a Sea Queen point despite everyone on press row (OK, EPJ and I) and the REV faithful having the 18-7 score. Doesn't look like it will matter.

Sea Queens need a TO baby

REV is continuing the momentum it grabbed at the end of the first game, starting off game two with an 8-2 lead. Johnna Fouch is doing a great job mixing up her sets, getting Krista Vansant, Alyssa Mason and Danielle Newcombe involved on the attack.

REV roars out to 1-0 lead

After a slow start, the Wildcats got rolling, winning the first game over Corona del Mar 25-21. Krista Vansant had seven kills, including four in a game-ending 11-3 run. Alyssa Mason notched the last two points for REV on a block kill and a kill from an assist by Johnna Fouch, who had 11 assists in the game.

Game two about to start.

REV getting its legs

Corona del Mar is still up 17-14, but REV seems to have gotten into a bit of a groove. Brianna Potter has just delivered two consecutive kills, which might be the spark the Wildcats need.

Corona del Mar up early

The Sea Queens have it going on so far, taking an 11-6 lead thanks to three kills by Morgan Boukather. REV is having problems getting a set off of Corona del Mar's serves.

Just had a rousing rendition of the national anthem and we are ready to go. REV and Corona del Mar met in this Division II-AA title game last year and REV is trying to become only the second county team to win three straight CIF titles. Los Altos wins

Los Altos carried over the momentum from game 4 to win game 5 15-10. Its serving game kept Bonita off-balance throughout and eventually ruled the day.

And by the way, the girl I've been calling Brittany Fulton is Jazmen Russell. The program had their numbers confused. Thankfully I figured out out late rather than never.

REV-Corona del Mar comes up in a half-hour.

We're going 5

After falling down 21-20, Los Altos rallied to force a fifth game, winning 25-23 on a block-kill by middle blocker Amanda Brown. Place is getting crazy.

20-20 in game 4

Bonita has stormed back from five points down to tie the game at 20 thanks to two Allie LaPierre aces. Let's see if Bonita can close this out.

Los Altos up 10-8 in game 4

The internet connection had a minor stroke, so I'm a little late on this update. Bonita continued the momentum it received in the middle of game three, closing out the game 25-18 to take the 2-1 lead.

Game three about to start. Oh yeah, its 14-3 Ohio State at half. Boo.

Bonita up 14-13 in game two

Bonita came out in the second game pretty fast, taking a 12-7 lead, but a 6-2 Los Altos run has the Bearcats up one. Allie LaPierre and Victoria Dennis have two kills each in this game for Bonita, with LaPierre leading Bonita with 3 overall.

Brittany Fulton has nine kills and an ace to lead Los Altos and is serving right now.

Los Altos takes game one

A service ace by Meagan Macias closed out the first game, a 25-16 Los Altos victory. Amanda Brown added two aces during a key juncture that saw the conquerors score four points in a row to take a 21-13 lead.

Bonita's attack has faltered thus far, as five of their points came from Los Altos service errors. Allie LaPierre has two aces to lead the Bearcats.

Game two about to start.

Los Altos up 16-12 game one

Brittany Fulton has five kills to lead Los Altos right now. Bonita's struggling a bit, with Allie LaPierre's one kill, one block and one ace leading the way so far.

Live from CIF volleyball

Just made it to Cypress College for the CIF volleyball championships. I'll be trying to do three things at once - cover two volleyball championship games (DIII-AA between Bonita and Los Altos and DII-AA between Redlands East Valley and Corona del Mar), live blog at them and still watch parts of the Michigan-Ohio State football game online.

The third is looking to be tough, as they have us in some bird's nest atop the gym where internet access is spotty. Only a few minutes away from Bonita-Los Altos.

Poly wins 67-54

Colony ran out of gas a bit in the fourth quarter of a physical matchup with Long Beach Poly, as Poly's bench helped it slowly expand the lead in the fourth. The Titans didn't do themselves any favors from the free-throw line, only hitting 7 of 14 foul shots in the final period. Colony also went 6:21 without a field goal at one point in the quarter.

6-0 run has Poly up 7, 5:08 left

Long Beach Poly's full-court press defense, which forced 35 Colony turnovers during the first three periods, spurred a 6-0 run that has the Jackrabbits up 52-45 with just over 5 minutes left. Both teams have had issues holding the ball against the in-your-face pressure defense that the other employs.

Long Beach Poly ended the third period on a 6-0 run to take a slim 43-40 lead over Colony going into the fourth quarter. It's been a sloppy game filled with turnovers, but the Titans' physical defense has given them a good shot with a quarter to go.

Colony up 4 at half

Colony continue the spirited play it showed at the end of the first quarter, holding Poly to 10 points in the second period to take a 25-21 lead at the half. Colony is using a similar formula to what Cajon used against the Jackrabbits in the CIF-SS Division I-AA title game last week, keep Poly's interior players from getting going and forcing the Jackrabbits to shoot from the perimeter.

Poly up 13-11 after 1

After a slow start which saw Colony fall behind 11-4, the Titans have stabilized a bit and now are just down 13-11 going into the second quarter of their girls Division I regional title game.

Ike going to Sacramento

Naz Richardson's two free throws with 8.1 seconds left started the part, as Eisenhower defeated Los Angeles Loyola 68-62 to become the first boys team from San Bernardino County to ever makde the state championship game. Pretty crazy stuff.

26.1 seconds away

Eisenhower is up 66-58 and has the ball with 26.1 seconds left against Loyola, guaranteeing itself a berth in the state championship game in Sacramento next weekend barring an apocalyptic collapse. Loyola is in foul mode right now as it tries to keep hope alive.

The scoreboard goes kablooey

A little delay in the game here, as the Pauley Pavilion scoreboard went out. Looks like they have fixed the problem, but the delay was long enough to allow this insightful writeup. 60-50 Eisenhower, 4:01 left.

And now, the CIF-State people blantantly refuse to run the clock in the correct manner.

Ike increases lead to 10, 4:37 left

Ike scored the first seven points of the fourth quarter and holds a 60-50 lead with a little under five minutes left. Alex Varner provided a spark, scoring the first four points and assisting on a Bryan Bock 3-pointer that gave Ike the double-digit margin.

Ike up 5 through 3

Eisenhower High School is eight minutes away from going to its first-ever state championship game, as it holds a 51-46 lead over Los Angeles Loyola. The Eagles led by as many as 11 points, holding the Cubs without a point for four and a half minutes, but two three-point plays by Carl Hoffman and Miles Cartwright brought Loyola within striking distance.

Ike up 40-37, 4:29 left in 3rd

A layup from Devin Garner with 5:37 left gave the Eagles their current lead. Loyola came out quick, with Carl Hoffman scoring consecutive baskets to give them a 37-36 lead, but has been scoreless for three minutes now. Ike has also ratcheted up the defensive pressure, having now forced 15 Loyola turnovers.

Ike up one at half

After a frenetic first quarter that saw Loyola take a 24-20 lead, the scoring slowed down quite a bit in period No. 2. The Eagles took the lead with 39 seconds left on a 3-pointer by Bryan Bock.

They also dealt with Carl Hoffman much better. The Loyola bruiser had 14 points and five rebounds in the first quarter alone but was less of a factor in the second, only scoring two points.

Andrew Bock leads a balanced Eagle attack with 8 points, while Keyon Sayles and Kirby Gardner came off the bench to score four points each in the second half and provide Ike with a shot in the arm.

Ike tied at 24, 6:18 left in 2nd

The Eagles are matched with Los Angeles Loyola in a rematch of their CIF-SS Division II-A championship showdown last week at Honda Center, won by the Eagles 79-73. Ike has overcome a hot start from 6-foot-9 Loyola center Carl Hoffman, who scored 14 points in the first quarter.

No drama at Mater Dei tonight, as Colony has pulled away to a 69-52 lead with 1:24 left in the game. Camille Buckley is possessed, with 30 points and an unofficial 17 rebounds. Te'onna Campbell has 17 points while Jazmyne White has scored all 12 of hers in the second half.

The Titans have outscored the Cougars 34-18 in the second half and are on the verge of another CIF title.

Colony up 10 after 3

The Titans defense did some work in the third period, holding Canyon Springs to seven points and forcing five Cougar turnovers to take a 51-41 lead. Camille Buckley and Te'onna Campbell continue to cook for Colony, with Buckley at 22 points and 12 rebounds while Campbell has 15 of her own.

Eight minutes separate Colony from a second straight CIF title.

Colony up 1 at half

The Titans ended the second period on a 10-3 run, edging out to a 35-34 game in a frenetic, tight game. Camille Buckley and Te'onna Campbell are the big players for the Titans, with Buckley compiling 16 points and 11 rebounds and Campbell adding 11 points.

Amber Smith has 20 points to lead Canyon Springs while Tre'shonti Nottingham has six points and five steals. Nottingham also has three fouls, as each team compiled high foul counts in the first half.

15-13 Canyon Springs after 1

Kind of a scattershot game thus far, with Canyon Springs taking the slight 15-13 lead into the second quarter. Tre'Shonti Nottingham has seven points and four steals to lead the way for the Cougars, while Camille Buckley is ruling the boards for Colony with nine rebounds to go with her eight points.

Canyon Springs takes early lead

10-7 Canyon Springs with 2:18 left in the first. The Cougars have pestered Colony into four turnovers, including consecutive steals by Tre'shonti Nottingham that turned into baskets. Camille Buckley has four points and five rebounds already for Colony.

Game 2 in the heezy

After watching Ike defeat Loyola early this afternoon, I killed some hours at the ESPNZone at Disneyland today before venturing back to Mater Dei High School - the scene of Cajon's triumph over Long Beach Poly.

At Mater Dei today is the Division I-A final, pitting No. 1 seed Colony against No. 3 Moreno Valley Canyon Springs. The last time these schools met in a CIF final was in football in 2007, when the Titans rolled in a game marred by multiple personal fouls and police cars on the field to break up brawls. Not good times.

Don't expect an unruly repeat though. Colony, the D3-A champions a year ago, boast 6-foot-2 center Camille Buckley and the White combination of 6-0 swingman Jazmyne White and 5-7 junior guard Haley White.

Canyon Springs has sophomore Sophia Ederaine. Ederaine looks out of place repping the Chris Sabo-like Rec-Specs, but is long and athletic and can cause problems in the post. Her matchup with Buckley is a key to watch.

Tipoff to come in less than three minutes.

Ike wins 79-73

Eisenhower wins its first CIF title since 2003 with a 79-73 win over Loyola. It was a very well-played game that saw Andrew Bock score 27 of his 29 points in the second half for Ike while Nick Carter hit two clutch 3-pointers in the final minute and a half to swing the game in the Eagles' favor. Bernard Ireland also had 19 points for Ike.

Miles Cartwright scored 33 points in a losing effort for the Cubs, while Ryan Oliver and Carl Hoffman added 19 and 12 points, respectively.

Carter hits 2 quick treys

Ike's Nick Carter has hit two 3-pointers from the left wing in a span of 30 seconds, giving Ike a 75-71 lead with 54.9 seconds left. Loyola ball.

Loyola 71-69, 1:38 left

Miles Cartwright just drained two free throws to put the Cubs in the lead in a back-and-forth fourth quarter. Cartwright has a game-high 32 points for Loyola while Andrew Bock leads Ike with 26. Free-throw shooting has been Ike's flaw thus far, as they are 3 of 8 from the charity stripe.

Ike up 55-48 through 3

And Andrew Bock continues to feel the flow, hitting another 3-pointer as the Eagles built their lead to as many as nine. Bock had 15 in the quarter and has 17 overall. Great quarter for the Eagles, who outscored Loyola 26-15 and neutralized the Cubs' size advantage inside.

Fourth quarter to start.

Bock feeling the flow

Andrew Bock has awoken suddenly in the third quarter, scoring 12 points in the last four minutes and most recently, assisting Nicholas Carter on a transition layup that has Ike up 52-44 with 1:38 left in the third. The Eagles are on a 17-5 run, with two Bock 3-pointers helping that burst.

39-35 Loyola, 5:53 left in 3rd

Bernard Ireland has continued his hot play, scoring six quick points for the Eagles. Loyola scored four points in the first 16 seconds of the period, but Ike seems to have weathered that storm. Coming back from a timeout after a nice hustle rebound by Ike's Alex Varner

Loyola up 4 at half

Loyola's size has been a factor, as 6-9 senior Carl Hoffman scored 10 points and pulled down 4 rebounds against the much-smaller Eagles to help stake Loyola to the 33-29 lead. Ike star point guard Andrew Bock has been very quiet, scoring two points and adding three assists, but the Eagles have gotten a shot in the arm from Bernard Ireland - who has eight points - and Kirby Gardner, who has six points off the bench.

25-23 Loyola, 4:41 left in 2nd

Right after Bernard Ireland hit a 3 in transition to tie the game for the Eagles, Loyola got a transition bucket of its own from Carl Hoffman on a layup. Ireland leads Ike with 8 points right now.

It's about to go down

Ike and Loyola have just been introduced and we are ready to rumble. And yes, I just ripped off Michael Buffer.

The OC double dip

Today I get a unique treat - two CIF title games, two genders, two arenas and one county. Yes I'm doing the double-dip of high school basketball fun today, as I am currently on press row of Honda Center waiting for the Division II-A final between Eisenhower and Los Angeles Loyola to start - which should be in about 15-20 minutes. I'll also be back at Mater Dei - site of Cajon's historic 52-44 win over Long Beach Poly last night - to see Colony face Moreno Valley Canyon Springs in the Division I-A girls final at 6:30 tonight.

What I'll do in between games is up for debate, but what is not is the roster contrasts between No. 1-seeded Ike and No. 3 seed Loyola. The Eagles, led by Creighton-bound point guard Andrew Bock, runs small, with their tallest player being 6-foot-4 and most players running in the 6-0 to 6-1 range. The Eagles like to play at a frenetic pace and average nearly 80 points per game.

Loyola, on the other hand, has a Twin Towers situation - boasting 6-10 junior Tony Wroblicky and 6-9 senior Carl Hoffman. Even junior guard Miles Cartwright - the Cubs' leading scorer - runs 6-3.

It'll be an interesting contrast of personnel. Warmups are going on and tipoff will be in roughly 12 minutes.

Cajon wins

Darshae Burnside wrapped up Cajon's second straight CIF title in fitting fashion, nailing two free throws and blocking her sixth shot of the game at the end of the 52-44 victory. The victory breaks Poly's 34-game playoff winning streak. Cajon was led by Layshia Clarendon's 28 points.

More to come.

Cajon up 39-27 after 3

The Cowgirls are continuing to roll, forcing the Jackrabbits to shoot unsuccessfully from the outside en route to the 12-point lead. Layshia Clarendon has 23 points now, including a runner with 8.6 seconds left that put Cajon up 39-27.

Darshae Burnside now has 15 points and four blocked shots to go with her six points, but she committed her fourth foul late in the third. Poly, after starting the quarter strong, didn't score for the final 4:21 of the period.

The Jackrabbits have come out of halftime inspired, closing Cajon's lead to 30-25 with 5:37 left in the third. Thaddesia Southall has scored four of the points for Poly. Cajon called a timeout after Poly's last basket, got a 3-pointer from Maya Darby, which caused Poly to use its own 30-second timeout.

33-25 Cajon, 5:20 left in the third.

30-19 Cajon at the half

The Cowboys played about as well in the first half as could have been expected, taking an 11-point lead at halftime despite playing all five of its starters for all but 11.9 seconds of the first half.
i
Layshia Clarendon has 19 points and three rebounds unofficially while Darshae Burnside has four points, nine rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. Poly's offense is coming from Ta'Nitra Byrd, who has 14 of Poly's 19 points. Turnovers have been an issue for the Jackrabbits, who have 11.

Stay tuned to see if this upset continues.

Cajon up 8, 2:37 till halftime

The Cowboy defense has successfully harassed the Jackrabbits, forcing them into 10 turnovers at this juncture. Darshae Burnside also has three blocked shots.

Offensively, Clarendon has 14 points, including a gutty 3-point play at the 4:03 mark that gave Cajon its current 23-15 lead.

Clarendon nails 3 at buzzer

however, Cajon is up 6-0 with 5:07 left in the first quarter and Poly has called timeout.

And the opening tip

almost kills my computer. Obviously the game has started.

Live from Mater Dei

I'm here live at the Division I-AA final between Cajon and Long Beach Poly. It was a bit of a harrowing journey and I wouldn't be surprised if my car ends up towed, but I'm here.

6 minutes and counting until game time so I'll be brief. Basically, Poly is Goliath and Cajon is David - if David had two sweet Division I players in guard Layshia Clarendon and center Darshae Burnside in his arsenal. Poly has won three straight large-school state titles, four straight CIF titles (off the top of my head) and 34 playoff games in a row. They boast a McDonald's All-American in 6-foot-3 Monique Oliver.

However, Cajon has won its four playoff games by an average of 34.2 points per game and is playing as well as it has all season. And its no stranger to playoff pressure, having won the Division II-A CIF title a year ago.

I'll keep you updated as the game rolls on.

Party time in Rancho Cucamonga

Jereme Schumacher intercepted Josh Nunes at the goal line for the 4th interception of the game for the Cougars, clinching a 21-7 victory. Rancho Cucamonga finished 13-0-1, its first undefeated season in school history, and wins its first CIF title since 1999. Upland finishes 11-3.

Upland punts, up against it

The Highlanders still are struggling to get anything going, having to punt in a fourth-and-long situation from their own 40. They pinned Rancho inside its 10, but with 6:54 left and the Cougars up 21-7, time is running out on the Highlanders as they take over at the Cougars' 45 after a short Rancho punt.

Cougars extend the lead

Greg Watson hit Randal Telfer on a fade route for a 9-yard touchdown pass on the first play of the fourth quarter, putting the Cougars up 21-7 with 11:55 remaining in the game.

End 3rd, still 14-7

Rancho still up 14-7, facing a third-and-goal from the Upland 9. Oh yeah, they are counting the 50/50 money behind me. If I'm lucky and can finagle some cash, drinks are on me tonight. I'll keep you posted.

Fumble!!!

Upland fumbled on a dive play at its own 23, which sophomore linebacker Kiki Kauvaka recovered, giving the Cougars prime field position in an attempt to grab a two-score lead. Just over a minute left in the third now.

Upland stopped at midfield, Rancho ball

After a couple of first downs, the Highlanders were forced to punt, a punt that was partially blocked by junior defensive back Chayz Holt. Rancho now has the ball near midfield, up 14-7 with 7:30 left in the third.

Doing double duty

Rancho Cucamonga junior defensive tackle River Harris apparently also plays the trumpet as well as playing football. Harris, a 6-foot, 220-pounder, was in full uniform (except the helmet of course) marching and playing that trumpet with the rest of the Cougar band at halftime.

Also, Berwick's injury is a lower leg break, likely the fibia or tibia. Apparently Berwick is trying to tough it out and watch the rest of the game prior to going to the hospital.

Second half is about to start. Upland to receive.

Halftime stats

This is what I got from the people actually keeping track of this stuff:

Upland - 6 first downs, 139 total yards

Josh Nunes - 7 for 17, 63 yards, 2 INTs
Davion Fleming - 8 rushes, 64 yards, 1 TDs
Gianni Olivas - 2 catches, 20 yards

Rancho Cucamonga - 7 first downs, 168 total yards

Greg Watson - 6 of 9, 74 yards; 4 carries, 21 yards, 1 TD
Charles Saseun - 2 carries, 49 yards, 1 TD
Irshad Stolden - 2 catches, 42 yards

Also, junior center Gary Berwick apparently broke his leg in the second quarter, which obviously puts him out of commission for the rest of the game. Rancho has already had a couple of high center snaps in his absence, so its something that bears watching in the second half.

Halftime, Rancho still up 14-7

After a crazy first period, the second period was scoreless, leaving the Cougars with a 14-7 lead. I'll get some stats from Lou Brewster and post them in a bit.

Rancho PA guy getting cheeky

This game may be at Chaffey College, but there was no mistaking the loyalties of the PA guy. After Josh Nunes overthrew a receiver on 3rd-and-10 from the Rancho 37 on a miscommunication, the Rancho PA guy made a crack that Nunes' incomplete pass was intended for former coach Chris McEwen, who is apparently among the throng on the Cougar sideline.

4:30 left in the 2nd, still 14-7. Matt Calkins and John Murphy are drinking Diet Dr. Pepper out of a commemorative Indiana Jones cans. Awesome.

Man bites dog, or Nunes bites Rancho

After throwing his second interception of the night, a pass that Daniel Fonua bobbled before catching it at the Upland 45, Josh Nunes was Johnny on the spot, picking up Fonua's fumble at the end of the return and advancing it 14 yards to the Upland 47. We'll see if Upland takes advantage of this break with just over 7 minutes left in the second.

Still 14-7 Rancho.

First quarter over, Rancho up 14-7

Rancho Cucamonga junior center Gary Berwick just limped off the field with an injury as the first quarter concluded with the Cougars up 14-7. At this rate, my pregame prediction is really going to suck as far as the over/under is concerned. If you are in Vegas, bet high.

Fleming busts loose, Upland on board

Senior running back Davion Fleming gets the Highlanders back in business, breaking a 53-yard run up the middle to the Cougars 4-yard line. He was caught there, but finished it off with a 4-yard TD run off right tackle on the very next play. With Jake Van Ginkel's extra point, Upland is now down 14-7 with 1:23 left in the first.

And in other news, John Murphy's computer finally stopped beeping. The rest of the press box is thankful for that.

Lew picks it, Rancho scores again

After the Rancho score, defensive back Andrew Lew intercepted Josh Nunes at midfield. Greg Watson then found Irshad Stolden on a 44-yard reception to the Upland 3 two plays later. Immediately after that, Watson took the zone read keeper up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown.

3:38 left in the first, Upland needs help after falling behind 14-0.

Saseun takes it to the house

Just as I sent my last blog, Rancho senior WR Charles Saseun showed why he was second in state in the 100-yard dash. Saseun took at end around to the left side and sped down the sideline for a 51-yard touchdown, easily outracing the Upland pursuit. Josh Wolfer's extra point gives Rancho a 7-0 led with 5:31 left in the first.

upland wins toss, defers

Upland won the toss and deferred. Rancho Cucamonga got one first down on its opening possession, but Greg Watson got sacked by Tim Helton on a key 3rd and 8, causing the Cougars to punt.

Upland ball, 8:46 left in the first, no score.

Live from Chaffey College

I found the faintest possible signal ever here at Chaffey for Upland-Rancho Cucamonga, so we'll try to get this done. In the house are Clay Fowler, Louis Brewster, Matt Calkins and the artist formerly known as the Prep-dog from the P.E. and special guest Lance Pugmire from the L.A. Times.

Weather is nice - temperature in the upper 50s with light wind - and they've already made at least two annoucements for fans to squeeze into the Chaffey bleachers. So it might be better to be watching at home on the ol' blog.

National anthem now.
