It's not easy when the playoffs roll around and you haven't been challenged during league play.
Aquinas softball coach Chris Ybarra won't use that as an excuse after his team, seeded No. 1 in the division, was knocked out of the Division 4 playoffs with a 7-4 loss at home to San Dimas on Tuesday.
"I won't say anything bad about the other teams in our league," he said.
Although San Dimas starter Bethie Celaya wasn't overpowering, she was likely the best pitcher Aquinas had seen in quite a while. Celaya allowed nine hits and four runs, but also had a stretch in which she retired 9 in a row and 11 of 12. Aquinas scored all of its runs in the first and seventh innings, two apiece.
Aquinas won't have an easy time replacing senior co-captains Danielle Vega, Chelsea Casas, Ybarra admits. But those who said in years past that Aquinas would struggle after losing certain seniors, were wrong.
"We've still got seven starters returning," Ybarra said. "I expect we'll challenge for the league title again."

Having been beaten nearly single-handedly by Marci Valenzuela's five RBI's in a 6-1 loss to Colton in their first meeting, Cajon softball coach Jerry Tivey new he wasn't going to let Valenzuela beat him.
So in the rematch on Thursday, Tivey didn't just pitch around Valenzuela, he
The score will show that Colton downed Cajon 6-1 to take over first place in the San Andreas League, but it won't show that both teams had opportunities.

Got an e-mail last night from Cajon coach Jerry Tivey detailing the exploits of former Cowgirls Ashley Maroda and Breja'e Washington. Maroda, a 2007 graduate, led New Mexico State to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in school history this year and went 3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs in the Aggies' 9-0 win over Texas Tech in the NCAA regionals Friday night. A senior, Maroda is in the top 5 of 10 different categories of New Mexico State's record book.
Washington, a freshman at Texas, tied the school single-season record with 35 stolen bases this year and will likely break it this weekend, as the Longhorns are also playing in an NCAA regional this weekend. Not a bad first year by any means.
Also, Rialto graduate Bree Evans is playing right now for Michigan in the NCAA regional in Ann Arbor. Evans, an outfielder and leadoff hitter, will likely see her season end fairly soon however, as the Wolverines are down 8-3 in the sixth inning to Notre Dame in an elimination game.
Rim of the World juniors Sarah Tribe and Taylor Tribe and Chaffey graduate and current University of La Verne softball player Laura Olson will represent USA Athletes International in Australia this summer, as they will join 11 other players from across the country at the Blacktown Softball Challenge June 16-19 in Sydney. Along with playing international squads, the three players will travel across the Gold Coast region of Australia. They were selected based off recommendations from coaches, fellow athletes and athletic professionals.
Ashley Simmons, who would've been one of the pitchers used by Cajon softball coach Jerry Tivey this season, now won't be. That's because Simmons has transferred to San Gorgonio.
Simmons was with Cajon just before the season started but has since transferred to San Gorgonio. Her transfer was approved by the CIF-Southern Section on Friday. She has not yet played varsity softball and I believe she is a senior.
Interestingly enough, Cajon opens league play on Tuesday -- you guessed it -- at home against San Gorgonio.
Cajon, meanwhile, finished play in the Hemet Tournament on Friday night, beating Palm Desert 19-8 in four innings to capture seventh place. Although she didn't pitch her best, Sharon Estrada had a record-breaking day at the plate. Estrada went 4-for-4 with two home runs and a school-record nine RBIs to lead the Cowgirls.
The Fall Signing Period for sports such as basketball, volleyball, baseball, softball and water polo starts next Wednesday and lasts through November 17. A few county athletes have set up their signings already.
Ontario Christian gymnast Kaitlyn Clark will be signing a letter of intent to the University of Alabama at Precision Gymnastics in Rancho Cucamonga at 6 p.m. Alabama is one of the top programs in the nation for women's gymnastics.
Rim of the World has also announced a signing ceremony for Nov. 16 at the school. Signing on that day will be softball player Elizabeth Caporuscio, who will be attending Arizona State. Caporuscio, a star pitcher for the Fighting Scots, verbally committed to play for the Sun Devils during her sophomore year.
All coaches and schools which will be having players sign during the Fall Signing Period should e-mail The Sun at sports@inlandnewspapers.com or tj.berka@inlandnewspapers.com or call (909) 483-9305.

Just received a call from Eisenhower softball highlighting their 2-1 victory over Redlands this afternoon, the Terriers' first loss in the Citrus Belt League in nearly four years. Sarah Pineda pitched a five-strikeout, five-hit complete game for the Eagles while April Fultz's two-run second-inning double drove in both runs for Eagles (8-8 overall, 3-2 league). Ike hadn't beaten the Redlands since the 2005 season.
Redlands' last loss in league came on May 3, 2007, when the Terriers lost 1-0 at Yucaipa. Redlands (12-4, 4-1) will host Yucaipa, which is now all of a sudden in first place, at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
The division shifts in football got most of the attention by the CIF-Southern Section on Monday, but several other powerful local teams in other sports were impacted by the changes.
One of the teams most impacted was the Redlands East Valley girls volleyball team. The three-time defending CIF-SS champions are being bumped up a class from Division 2-AA to 1-A. The Baseline and Citrus Belt leagues were bumped up in softball from Division 2 to Division 1 and the Citrus Belt was bumped up from Division 2 to Division 1 in girls soccer.
The High Desert also saw its soccer prowess recognized as two-time defending Division 4 girls champion Sultana moves into Division 3, along with CIF-State Southern California Division II regional champion Granite Hills. The boys soccer teams got a bump too, with the Mojave River League moving up to Division 4 and the Desert Sky League going to Division 5.
Pretty heavy action in Division 2, where defending champion Etiwanda is ranked No. 1, with Redlands, Los Osos and Yucaipa closely behind.
Division 2
1. Etiwanda
2. Vista Murrieta
3. Redlands
4. Los Osos
5. Beckman
6. Yucaipa
7. Lakewood
8. Canyon Springs

Got an e-mail earlier today from REV athletic director Rhonda Fouch mentioning a couple more signings of REV athletes to scholarships. According to the e-mail, softball player Leanne Lopez signed with Cal State Northridge while girls basketball player Shelby Kaenel signed with Cal Baptist.
Just got a call from Redlands East Valley athletic director Rhonda Fouch notifying me of three REV athletes signing during the early signing period. Volleyball player Johnna Fouch will sign with San Diego State Friday at 7 p.m. in the REV ASB room, while softball player Amy Nece will sign with North Carolina early next week, as will baseball player Griffin Murphy with San Diego. Nece is going on an official visit to North Carolina this upcoming weekend according to Fouch.
Cajon High School will have two athletes signing Friday as part of the 2009 Fall Signing Period, with softball player Bre'jae Washington signing with the University of Texas and gymnast Henrietta Green signing with Iowa State. The signings will take place at 10 a.m. in room B-24 on the Cajon campus.
Kaiser pitcher Alyssia Palomino will sign a letter of intent to play softball at Auburn on Thursday, according to an e-mail sent a few minutes ago by Kaiser softball coach John Stevens. The signing will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the principal's conference room at the high school. Wednesday is the first day of the Fall National Signing Period.
Other softball players expected to sign Wednesday are Aquinas pitcher Stevie Goldstein (Loyola Marymount), Chino Hills second baseman Talee Snow (UCLA) and Ayala pitcher Jessica Hall (UCLA). E-mail me at tj.berka@inlandnewspapers.com or comment on this blog if you know of any other signings going down this week.
Bree Evans, a standout softball player at Rialto High School from 2005-08 and now a center fielder at the University of Michigan, was hospitalized Thursday evening in serious condition after being injured in a collison at home plate during an exhibition game with Michigan State according to an article released by annarbor.com.
Evans, a sophomore for the Wolverines, was transported by ambulance to the University of Michigan Hospital, where her condition was described as "acutely ill with questionable prognosis." The original story can be found here.
Evans started 59 games for Michigan as a freshman, batting .319 with eight doubles, two triples and 25 RBI. She also stole 16 bases.
Rim of the World sophomore shortstop Elizabeth Caporuscio, who helped lead the Fighting Scots to the Mojave River League title this past season, verbally committed to Arizona State according to an e-mail sent by Rim athletic director Josh Hill. Caporuscio was a first-team all-MRL selection for Rim, hitting .510 with three home runs, 26 RBIs and 10 doubles this season.
The Barstow High School softball team, which had lost to No. 1 seed Calvary Murrieta in the first round of the CIF-SS Division V playoffs Thursday, had its protest upheld by the CIF-SS offices and will advance according to a press release sent out by CIF Friday morning.
The Aztecs' protest was based on Calvary Murrieta taking illegal batting practice on the day of the game. The rule, listed below, was spelled out in the CIF's press release:
"Teams entered in the softball playoffs WILL NOT be permitted to take batting practice on the day of the scheduled contest. Batting practice will be construed as any type of pitching motion with ANY type of ball from in front of the batter (including pitching machines, underhand tossing, overhand throwing or pepper). THE ONLY ACCEPTABLE BATTING WARMUP WILL BE SIDE SOFT TOSS. The player who tosses the ball should be on a knee and to the side of the batter. The ball should be lifted, not pitched, to the batter. THE PENALTY FOR BATTING PRACTICE WITH WIFFLE BALL, SOFTBALL, BASEBALL, ETC. MAY BE FORFEITURE OF GAME."
With the win, which will go down in the books as a 7-0 Barstow victory, the Aztecs will advance to play at Anaheim Western at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Cajon softball coach Jerry Tivey was named the California Coaches Association's softball Coach of the Year late last week. Tivey will be honored at a banquet set to be held on June 13 in Irvine and will be in the running for the National Coach of the Year.
The Tivey-led Cowgirls have already clinched the San Andreas League title and are 20-4 overall and a perfect 12-0 in the SAL going into the final week of the season. They are No. 2 in the most recent Division III poll behind Westlake Village Oaks Christian and have been led by senior second baseman Brehanna Rodrigues (.569 batting average) and freshman pitcher Monique Wesley, who has thrown seven straight shutouts.

Pete Marshall first started covering prep sports for The Sun in 1991. Since then, he has covered high school sports in person in California as far south as Calexico and as far north as Stockton, but he favors the largest county in the country. He has been around for a while, but prefers being called experienced to being called old.
