Resident: Firefighters doing a "hell of a job"

| | Comments (0)

Resident John Vanderelst evacuated his home after the City of Yucaipa called and asked him to leave because of the Pendleton Fire, he said. He later returned when he believed the fire didn't look that bad.

"We were ready to go," Vanderelst said. "We're probably going to stay until it gets real bad."

Vanderelst, who lives in the foothills on Poplar Street, complimented firefighters' efforts.

"These guys are doing a hell of a job," he said.

The Pendleton Fire in Yucaipa has burned about 640 acres and is 25 percent contained as of this morning.

Authorities have evacuated about 1,100 homes in the Wildwood Canyon area. Law enforcement officers have been knocking on doors and asking people to leave. A piece of yellow caution tape has been tied to fixtures at homes where families have left.

Fire officials warn residents who do not leave, after being ordered to evacuate, that they will not receive fire services if they later call 9-1-1.
