Who should replace Rice as head coach at Colony?
Tossing around a few candidates for the recently vacated Colony High School head coaching position...
Matt Bechtel: As some of the comments have mentioned, Los Osos High School's offensive coordinator seems the hottest assistant coach in the Inland Valley. If he's not playing the role of Texas' Will Mushcmap to Los Osos head coach Tom Martinez's Mack Brown, Colony might be a good fit for a young up and coming coach like Bechtel. After a year at Chaffey College, the effect Bechtel had in his return to Los Osos last season was obvious. Having graduated three-year starting quarterback Richard Brehaut to UCLA and do-everything running back Arby Fields to Northwestern, Los Osos surged to the CIF championship game in no small part because of Bechtel.
Eric Martinez: The Upland defensive coordinator has not only been to four consecutive CIF-SS Central Division champioinship games (emerging on the winning side of three of them), he has gone twice as Colony's defensive coordinator. After winning titles with the Titans in 2006 and 2007, he coordinated the Upland defense that carried the Highlanders to the 2009 CIF title. His ties to Colony coupled with his uncanny run of success seem to make him an obvious candidate.
John Kuslieka: The former Alta Loma head coach whose name staff writer Pete Marshall brought up is famaliar with the area. In eight years at Alta Loma before resigning last season, Kuslieka compiled a 36-37-1 record, the last seven seasons of which were in the ultra-competitive Baseline League. Kuslieka seems to have the right mix of a hard-line attitude and motivational approach that might work well at Colony.

Clay Fowler has been covering high school sports for six years in California and Texas. He was born in Dallas, attended the University of Texas and worked in Central Texas before joining the Daily Bulletin staff in 2006.

Bechtel - No experience. As an HC or with South School kids.
Martinez - No job they are laying off teachers.
Kusleika - No Success.
There is a dark horse who has way more success with similar kids. Not even going to say who it is.
Kuslieka would be a horrible fit,the guy doesn't even have a winninng record compiled up. Theres a huge difference in coaching the kids down south then up north. Matt bechtel would be a good fit. He's a young coach, with the fire that is needed in a program. He has a great offensive mind, he has great discipline for him and his program, and he has the kids working hard in the weight room and he knows what it takes to win. I think kids would be very willing to play for a coach like bechtel especially with the attitude and demeanor he coaches with. Id say bechtel fits in well @ colony and it wouldn't be a bad matchup for him and colony. And now for coach martinez, he's a decent coach. He coached were there was always talent. Both cif colony teams had tremendous talent and were in a weak division, and this past upland team had talent. I hear it wasn't even his defense it was tom salters defense that was being ran. The only thing that coach martinez has working for him is that he's a young coach, eager to continue to learn, with some fire. And I think he can coach well around the kids down south. So I think the matchup is between bechtel and martinez and ill let administration figure that one out, but good luck to both gentlemen! Hey upland how's the recruiting coming along, any suprise transfers coming in.
Hey Clay
It is nice to see such a credible reporter. Just kiddin!! Pretty sad when someone like yourself becomes an evaluator of coaches. I have yet to see you or hear about you visiting staff meetings or watching practices, etc. Yet, you use the "power of the pen" to declare your candidates.
Seems so odd that you do not have stories like:
How did former Alta Loma running back end up at Upland?
Why did so many players transfer from Colony before Rice resigned?
Martinez is the best choice. When Rice leaves can he please take his girlfriend and Sandoval with him.
They make the school look bad, real bad!
please offer to Eric Martinez. We would like to win a championship again.
Gonna say it again the district is going to lay off teachers and many are going to be Social Studies people. How can they bring in Martinez? No shot. He teaches Social Studies. I don't think Bechtel is a shoe in either. There are other people who are more qualified but I am not saying he is a bad choice either. Although personally I think I would rather be in his position as the #2 guy with a huge amount of pull and responsibility at the most talented school in the district, than the head coach at Colony.
I agree with you on Kusleika. Alta Loma is tough but he also had the negative interaction with the Admin up there as well which led to his resignation. Regardless of who was right in that situation it still puts a strike against him.
Colony should not have to look to far for an individual that would bring great sportsmanship and the love of the game to their Friday Night Lights. With a current Assistant Head Coach "Coach Jason Smith" - as Colony's Asst. head Coach - run game coordinator and Offensive Line Coach. With 9yrs experience and 4 of them at Colony. Already a teacher there and heads another sports program so he works with administration already. Everyone needs to put their personal wants and desires for this position aside and look at the potential individual before them.
Politics within current athletic director may prevent this qualified individual from getting a chance at this position. All politics need to be set aside and do what is best for the school and this football program!
Very professional,Fowler use the power of the pen and influnce schools on who should be their coach. What did Bechtal do at Chaffey College that was so wonderful.Martinez has had great athletes, check his record when he had to coach regular kids...not very good. What did Kusielka do at Alta Loma... You should be more responsible then this. There are several winning coaches out there that are probably interested in the position. The problem is the district will probably not go outside to hire a coach.Coaching football at Montclair, Ontario, Chaffey and Colony are very challenging, they don't have all the newest equipment, unlike the nortern schools in the district; however, they are still expected to win. Is there any head coaches in that district that are interested in the job? Perhaps, the coaches from Monclair and Ontario. Both were sucessful at schools outside the district...rumor has it, they took those jobs to get into the district and would probably like to move up.After all look what happened to Baiz, he had a losing record every year when he was at Ontario, now he is a cif championship coach.
Lay off of Clay Fowler, He is a reporter who is doing his job REPORTING. His observation will have no effect on the Colony Administration.
Colony was 6-5 before Coach Rice. The talent was there and he won 2 CIF Championships. Coach Baiz went to Rancho and won CIF, the talent was there. Coach Salter stays @ Upland and wins CIF, the talent was there. Coach Martinez of Los Osos goes to CIF finals the talent was there.
One common denominator they all had talent. Here is a good way to evaluate coaching. Who won with less. Who put out the most D-1 recruits and couldn't get it done. Who maybe just made the playoffs or didn't with less example: Garey or Claremont. Maybe these coaches should be candidates. They do more with less. Just because you win CIF does not make you a great coach. In my Opinion it takes great talent and great coaching to achieve a CIF Ring.
So Lay off Clay and let's see what happens. If your honest and evaluate you will come to your own conclusions!
SMITH is the only smart choice, he in reality was O.C.& line coach, and he has a relationship with the kids,(in south Ontario it's all about the relationships with the kids,& trust from the parents). SMITH IS QUALITY !!!
Bechtel is not a south Ontario guy (we cant pay $400 for spirit packs)& he will not deal with the boosters, or parents.
Kuslieka & (I hear in the running) Randall (ont) can't win. (maybe you didn't notices we win @ Colony)
Martinez he left & we don't forget, and there is no teaching spot for him. (by the way Upland ran Tom Salters Defense)
So... in my mind if SMITH does not get the job... It would be a case of collusion and not in the best interest of the kids. ITS JUST THAT CLEAR CUT!
Hay, Football fan, you are 100% correct. if Smith does not get the job, its Politics. AD & Admin. do whats right, think of our kids. SMITH SMITH SMITH announce it soon, close the flood gates. get on with spring training.
Now, Now fan said, you sound like either a disgruntled mother of a son who who couldn't even be a water boy on those teams, or a wife of someone who you think should get the job or better yet a mother and a wife who knows absolutely nothing about football or the world of education but has always felt that others were responsible for the success at Colony in the past. I suggest first you learn the game of football, then i suggest you take the pecifier out of your kids mouth and lastly stop endorsing people who dont even want the job. As far as your insults its funny becuase I am sure others can really throw some trash out on you, lol. Know the truth before you make a total ass of yourself on these blogs and get back in the kitchen and bake a pie you crazy mom.
Hot Topic, Craig Shuster. Ex- Head Football coach at Azusa, laid the foundation. DC at San Dimas and Monrovia. Lives right there.
Head Coaching Experience
Same type of kids.
Great Choice
This must be the guy Will Be Non Of Them means
Why shouldn't Randall get the job at Colony. Look what he did at Ontario, he turned that whole program around. Maybe his record doesnt show it (13-26)but the Ontario kids arent out of this world football players the band is more important there then the dang football program. The really question is what Randall can do with REALLLL football players. When at Duarte Randall turned that program around and made them winner before he left despite the fact paid was crappy and gang violence everywhere in that city players getting into trouble getting killed shot stab whatever ever else and he went to the playoffs all 3 years there. Its funny how all this coaches everyone has talked about have never won CIF championships Randall has 2.
Hey Jd check your facts, Ontario beat Colony last season (25-14) with less talent. If your a smith fan, that's cool, but don't be putting other coaches down. How many games have you coached....none? You guys are amazing, this is what's wrong with society and sports today, people like you, who think you have it all figured out. Some of you need to get a life, these bloggs are a joke.I am sure the school will pick the person they feel is the right coach for Colony. Good luck to coach Smith, if he is the right choice.
Schuster? Nice try go fishing in someone elses pond. Schuster is out of district. How do you justify hiring himto the teachers who will be getting laid off?
Smith is a good coach and should be given more responsibility by the next coach. However, I think someone with head football coaching experience should get the job. Smith should have applied for Montclair a few years ago or Alta Loma and cut his teeth first. Just an opinion. I have been very wrong many times and won't be shocked if wrong again.
Dear football fans/critics:
All of you have opinions about who should be the next head coach at Colony. Everyone just looks at the the win/loss record. You do not see what happens behing the scenes. The past is brought up. Look at the whole picture, don't ignore the truth. For exampleSmith helped coach 14 scholarship players this year. That is GREAT!. But Colony did not win the title. Bechtal is a successful assitant at Los Osos, but was he a winner at Ontario? NO! To Clay Fowler, quit using your pen to popularize people. Why don't you let the record speak for the coaches themselves. To all the coaches applying for the job, good luck. Remember sports writers for high school football are critics, not coaches.
Hey Anonymous, I have coached & trained football players for more then 25 years in orange,LA. and in the I.E. and I Volunteer more hours then most people work. So if I'm "what's wrong with society and sports today" I'm sorry. I'm sure you feel real good about your self, but at least i put my jd on blogs and not Anonymuos.
I'm sure all the candidates applying are good men!
Smith is in house, knows the kids+has there trust, the kids know his O & his coaching style, and is a HC on campus, and is a very good man. Logical Choice!!!
I always love the guys that have to post their credentials/unexperience. I been volunteering/coaching for 25 years. Blah blah blah. It might actually make you look more foolish.
"Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience."
JD,
You do volunteer your time and I also believe Jason Smith would be a great choice. But, all you really were was Rice's parent pet. He had one or two every year he was there. Martinez left because Rice's ego was too big to share the spotlight. You, Albert, Mike, and Anthony all need to stay off of all of these blogs. Go follow you son to college and just sit in the stands they won't have any "gopher" jobs for you.
To the Colony/Pomona coaching staff and professional bloggers... the Rock and disgruntled parents might be blogging, but I am here to let the whole world know that the world is rejoicing that you guys are leaving. The only people that are sad to see you go are following you. I am glad to see all of your athletes getting the opportunity to go to college. Lets see how many actually show up to school. Good luck to all. Just do us all a favor and quit acting like you have isolated enemies... we all know that you all have a lot less supporters that enemies.
BTW... Rice had a 4-7 record against the Sierra and Baseline leagues during his tenure at Colony... and that was with all 1,743 Division I scholarship athletes.
While I am at it... Rice's record at Colony
Overall- 39-12
Mt. Baldy League- 18-2 (Don Lugo, Ontario, Montclair, Garey, Chaffey)
vs. Jurupa Valley, Fontana & Granite Hills- 5-0
vs. everyone else- 16-10
vs. the JV Central Division Playoffs- 8-0
vs. the Upgraded Central Division- 2-2
vs. the Baseline League- 3-5
vs. the Sierra League- 1-2
Rice is a MUCH better recruiter that he is a coach.
Coach Smith gets my vote. I wish the colony admin would ask the parents what they think about coach smith. Smith is a great coach. He gets my vote.
JD thanks for all you do, you helped my son very much, and alot of kids, don't listen to any BS.
You ran a great summer program.
Dear Colony parents,
You don't realize parents don't get to choose the next coach at Colony. You NEVER will. If parents had their way their son would be starting. I am so tired of Colony parents spouting off, just sit in the stands and support your team. If yoou are going to mad, be angry with Coach Rice. Fourteen scholarship athletes and Colony can't win a Title this year. Oh by the way, I believe the next coach is not going to put up with your complaining. The past comment is not directed all the parents of Colony, only to the ones that think they are coaches!
14 scholarships is a big deal by any stretch of the imsagination... As I see it, CIF rings/championships are more for coaches than they are for players. Ask the kids at Upland that standing around empty handed... A championship IS GREAT but I think a kid gets more mileage out a college education than a CIF championship... Wouldn't you agree?
FIND SOMETHING BETTER TO DO!!!!!!!!!.
Can someone explain to me why nobody has mentioned an indistrict employee by the name of "The Rock" (Rocky St Angelo)to replace Rice. Isn't he a teacher and coach at Rancho? Wasn't he on the Colony staff a year ago and a big reason they won 5 games that year? He still has a great relationship with the parents and the kids loved him. He probably has a long list of references from all the places he has coached at. Shouldn't he be in the running?
This message is for IE Fan/ AKA baseline coach, slash recruiter extradonar. i am addressing your assinine comments one by one. First off, JD your hard work is always appreciated whether or not you do have a son on the team. You always represented each athlete with the same respect but more importantly sincerity for their well beings. So Thank you!! Now For IE fan, when do you find the time to be a statistician while sitting in that trailer you live in with no running water. Oh i remember now, you are the guy who is on the sidelines who claims to get kids in college yet i;ve heard some of those kids didn't get to much help from you lately. Bottom line, did we at colony lose to one team throughout our 4 years there, yes it was upland and credit goes to them. However, i would have to argue your point on the JV Central division becuase the only league they brought in was yours. let me tell you why, becuase you couldnt compete in the last division going one and done every year. So ask yourself this, are you still proud of yourself? Are you poud that you stepped down supposedly in division and won more games? Wow, look at that stat. If i had the kind of time you do, i would research the baseline leagues record in playoff games before last year but quite honestly unlike you I have friends, I have a job, and I have a life. So my stats are limited to one question, before you came into this so called JV division, what games did you guys win in the post season. HUM! just a thought. As far as actually naming coaches and claiming that they feel insulted or that they are worried about who likes them or not. LET ME PERSONALLY ANSWER THIS QUESTION. As I am one of the people you mentioned, i can give a rats ass what anyone thinks of me. However in the baseline country aren't you guys all about what you like, what you have done, who you know? The coaches leaving colony are not concerned about peoples perception of them, our concern is about something more deeper than that. You sound a little upset when you comment about scholorship athletes, are you mad about this. Did you think you were the only show in town? Grow up, at least come on here and really say what your credentials are and who you really are, so that way people will actually believe you may know something about what your saying. Me personally am not hiding behind a fake name and anyone who knows me also knows that I dont mind putting my idenity out there. Do you have these same guts or do you feel that the name IE fan is enough of a cover. I am sure i know who you are, and I believe you know that I know who you are. You are not a real IE fan becuase if you were you would represent the whole Inland Empire and be happy for each kid who does make it. However, you are only worried about coaches and their reputaions. This blog i have written is only directed toward you, no one else.
Chino High will be the new dominant team in the Mt Baldy league.
Colony dad, thank you,I do not know who you are(I would like to though). Abslammy, a BIG THANK YOU, not only for your words, but for being a huge part of my sons life. You and Anthony went over and above for 4 years to mold my son in to a good man, as you did for every kid, on the team or not.
The Question posed:Who should replace Rice as head coach at Colony? I gave my opinion; no disrespect to anyone else, but Smith is the logical choice:
1. He is in house.(in a time of budget cuts)
2. He(& Rice) ran the "O"
3. Has a relationship with the kids & trust from Parents
4. Is a HC on campus
5. Etc...
Anthony & Co. will be missed.
That was really low!!!! This is a football blog.. Why would you say nonsense like that. I guarantee that you would not let him know who you are. But, you would rather hide behind this site and take cheap shots at people. Whats sad is that you are an employee of chaffey joint. You talk about being an example for kids!!!! Give me a break.. I really dont think that was appropriate .. WOW that was LOW...
I do not know any of the coaches past or present on a personal level. I hope Colony finds a new head coach soon. I will have a son competing for a spot. I want it to be fair and without politics.
P.S. Can't we all just get along.
