Of three former Colony football players who transferred to Pomona, one is ineligible for his senior season

Three players who were part of Colony High School's Mt. Baldy League championship football team last season have transferred to Pomona High School but one of them isn't eligible to play his senior season, according to the CIF Web site. Anthony Rice, who coached the Colony football team to two CIF championships during his four-year tenure that ended last season, took over as Pomona head coach in May but CIF rules prevent players from transferring to the same school as their coach.

Demetrius Counts, the second-leading rusher for Colony last season, transferred to Pomona June 14, per the CIF Web site, which states that he is denied eligibility in all sports for his final year of high school. Counts was also a starting guard for the prolific Colony basketball team. Rice was unavailable for comment.

Before transferring to Pomona, Makale McCobb, a second-team all Mt. Baldy League receiver as a junior at Colony last season, transferred to Ontario Christian in April or May, according to Colony athletic director Jaime Sandoval. The 6-foot-1, 170-pound senior-to-be is eligible for the upcoming season, according to the CIF Web site, due to a valid change of address and perhaps because McCobb didn't transfer directly from Colony to Pomona.

Jared Kough, a second-team all-Mt. Baldy League defensive back as a junior last season, transferred from Colony to Pomona Feb. 5. Rice resigned from Colony Feb. 3 but didn't officially become Pomona's head coach until May. Kough, who had a valid change of address, according to the CIF Web site, is eligible for the upcoming season.

"(The CIF rule) spells out that if an athlete winds up where their previous coach was, supposedly they're ineligible for a year," Sandoval said. "What they're saying is that the athlete has to prove otherwise, why the athlete winds up at the coach's new school. The bottom line is that it's precieved that they moved because of their coach."

CIF Bluebook Rule 207 C (4):
A student at any grade level who transfers to a new school within one calendar year of the relocation of his/her high school coach to that school with or without a corresponding change in residence shall be considered prima facie evidence ("sufficient evidence") of undue influence/recruiting by the school to which the student transfers or may be considered prima facie evidence ("sufficient evidence") that the student enrolled in that school in whole or in part for athletic reasons. The student shall not be eligible to participate in interscholastic competition for one calendar year from the date of enrollment in the new school in all sports in which the student participated at the former school.

When a prima facie case ("sufficient evidence") of undue influence/recruiting exists, the student shall be ineligible to represent the new school in interscholastic athletic competition for a period of one calendar year from the date of the student's enrollment in the new school in all sports in which the student participated at the former school unless sufficient proof is presented to the satisfaction of the Section Commissioner that rebuts or disproves the evidence of undue influence/recruiting for athletic reasons.

All those kids that transferred should be ruled inelgible. Rice recruited a majority of those kids. As he is now, from what I hear he is constantly recruiting other kids from different schools. Once a snake always a snake. He makes false promises to players stating that he will get them recruited or guarantees the kids scholarships. From what I knw coaches don't get players scholarships, the individual athelete gets himself a scholarship through hard work on the field and off the field in the classroom. I heard froma parent at colony that rice told those kids that transferred to go to different schools and then eventually end up at pomona, and that's what they all did. The only way rice wins at pomona is if he recruits!

You sound like an idiot ananymous, or a disgruntled parent of a glorified water boy, or better yet an assistant coach who feels like he cant get it done........... grow up, it is not only a player who gets themselves scholorships, talk to any succesful coach who gets kids out and you will see all the work it takes on coaches part. Last I heard, Colony had a huge number of players who have recieved scholorships in the last 4 years, sorry your kid wasnt one of them. All you rice haters, pomona haters, colony haters, etc. need to grow up and leave it alone finally, these involve kids, yes I said Kids....... you are a sefish person who obviously has personal beef against this and you honestly sound quite childish. GROW UP, by the eay I also personally know that athletes have followed other sports on colony's campus including the all knowing Jaimie Sandavol, c'mon sandavol if I were you I wouldnt recite rules considering you have violated some yourself. HMMM just a thought............... I would hate for all the dirty laundry to get out, especially since sports like track, basketball, etc. have more laundry that needs cleaning than football ever has......... Let me just give you one example, Mis-appropriation of funds, OH NO!!!!!!!!!!

Well it seems that Coach Rice is not the only one. Coach Salter at Upland has convinced CIF that all three Alta Loma running backs all move to Upland and Upland Coaches had nothing to do with it. These Coaches are punks and they are using these boys to further their careers with no though to what is best for the boys themselves. Funny how Salter is seemingly such a good coach, why is it that he needs to steal players from other schools?

LOL... I am currently a parent at Colony High School. If you knew Jamie Sandoval you would know that he is the true snake. He has a whole slew of kids that should be going to different schools and transferred them in. He also never said ANYTHING when kids transferred out when Rice was coaching. Not only that he treats and talks to kids as if they were adults that could defend themselves. If I had the opportunity to take my kid out of here I would do it as fast as I could (by the way I am looking to move). It is truly sad that just because Ssndoval doesn't like Rice he tries to tak it out on the kids. GET A LIFE SANDOVAL!!!

Well this article is very funny! Was this article available last year when 2 players transferred out of Colony to go to Los Osos (Becthel), or what about the 2 that transferred to Upland (Salters) or is this a coach Rice thing. Seems to me that those players got out of Colony very easy. Clay must not like coach Rice very much. As far as players earning scholarships it is true, but I believe it is a team effort. The proof is in the pudding, Colony 12 guys going to college, Upland with with a CIF Title and a butt load of talent no more than 5 (maybe). Not to knock Uplands coaching staff but they had talent last year what is the difference that makes Colony so heavily looked last year. Coach Rice must be good because last i checked Pomona had not won anything yet, usually articles like this don't come out until after you win, Clay and this anonymous person up top must forsee victory in Rice future. Well when my next son goes to high school I will be MOVING to Pomona! LOLOLOL Good Day People!

Just curious? Does this new article about pomona. rice, and colony have anything to do with phs beating up on colony at the claremont tourney and then again at santiago by phs lineman? It was obvious that the coaches and parents were pretty upset at claremont.

I think it is a shame that adults are acting like immature children. Who really gets hurt in the end(the child);or do you really care because of your own selfish actions. Put yourself or your child in the place of these young men. I'm sure they are looking out for their best interest. OMG..they must be some awesome players for grown folks to act like whinning babies or should I compare you to snakes in a barrel? Just remember what goes around, comes around and he without sin, let him cast the 1st stone. Grow up and go do something productive like mind your own business and take care of your school/child. Another thing (he said - she said - they said) is gossip....I'm sure there is something that busy bodies can do other than try and destroy a childs life. Go volunteer at the homeless shelters, I'm sure they could use your help!! IT'S ABOUT THE CHILDREN - NOT YOU...RIGHT!!

To Ur an idiot - the # of scholorships you are talking about from colony last year - differ from the amount of ones that were actually fulfilled. Sad thing is everyone celebrated a bit to early since most of those were taken back by the colleges after the fact - for a bunch of reasons.. and some noting information was not recieved from "Coach Rice" in a timely manner. It is these kids who had to do the footwork for themselves after the fact. No one appogized to them - but why do these numbers keep being a credit to Rice.
To Curious - alot of people turned out to that tournament to watch that match up and the sad thing was to know pomona still put their ineligible players out there and let the Coaches talk so much no wonder colony was a bit shell shocked. But why is then if pomona was so confident that they refused to play colony's offense at santiago? A bit scared maybe? Only Rice knows.. Kudos to Colony for saving face and playing with class at Bonita, Claremont and Osos...

Facts Only Please!! said:

Let's cover the facts. According to the CIF rulebook a player cannot follow his/her coach for 1 year. It doesn't matter that kids left Colony to Osos or Colony to Upland. The kids that left didn't follow their head coach. You can say its about the kids but really its about the rules. Great programs do not need transfers they can coach and build their program from the lower levels up.
Second fact, when parents transfer their kid knowing the rules they run the risk of their son/daughter not being eligible. If you're gonna gamble be prepared to lose as well.
Third fact, passing league means absolutely nothing in regards to success in the season. Pomona beat Colony at the Claremont tourney and then couldn't win another meaningful game the rest of the day. Finished 4th out of 5 teams. Congrats Pomona you weren't even good enough to come back the 2nd day.
Fourth fact, Pomona proceded to get their asses kicked at the Osos tourney. Wow you beat Don Lugo! Rice and his staff are all great coaches. LOL
Fifth fact, how many of the 14 Colony signees from last year are really getting a football scholarship this fall??? (not financial aid or loans) Its no where near 14.
Get your facts straight before you write senseless stuff on this blog. Mr. Fowler works too hard at uncovering deceit to be disrespected by all your erroneous information.

Well according to the article 3 players from Colony are on PHS Football team. According to the article 1 is ineligable, so the other 2 did nothing wrong, they did not follow there coach, RIGHT!!!

None of the the top 10 teams in California ever receives transfers from other schools, wow I didn't know that. And in order to be a great program you have to not allow transfers, is that a fact or opinion? Well since I know that 6 of the top 10 schools in California have recieved transfers into their schools in the last 3 years that must be an opinion. But I thought it was facts only?

Then the "Facts only person" says that passing league "MEANS" absolutely nothing, is that a fact or opinion? Well if it is a fact I agree it means nothing, but what kind of makes me think it's an opinion is right after the comment it is stated "Colony didn't win another "meaningful" game." Then goes on to talk about more passing leagues. the defintion of meaningful is "full of meaning, significance, purpose, or value; purposeful; significant" make up your mind Mr./Miss Contradiction, meaningful or meaningless, it does matter or it doesn't matter, fact or opinion!!!

I strongly dislike people who got too much time on their hands. Why are yall worried about what Rice is doing? If you support Colony then support Colony and if you are Pomona be Pomona, stop worrying about what Rice has done, yall acting like he is Pete Carroll and he is leaving USC.

Coach Rice for so many people to dislike you and what you do lets me know that your doing something right. You are done coaching my son and I appreciate everything he has learned from you and your coaching staff. Keep your head up even though you got people who wish you bad, I hope you and your new team (and your 3 transfers who apparently make a world of difference to Colony supporters, LOLOL) have a very successful season!

To Colony Parent Last Year - "strongly dislike people who got too much time on their hands." Then why are you on here? Make up YOUR mind Mr./Miss Contradiction. I don'tthink anyone on her is truly worried about what Rice is doing. Maybe they are just tired of it.

Coaching kids is all about teaching them on and off the field. Not teaching them to take the high road when the fire under your feet gets hot. Teaching them accountability and teamwork. Teaching them that they win together not just on their own. I have never seen a running back or reciever win a game without a line or a quarterback to assist them. Teaching the kids ALL of the kids - not leaving them in limbo sitting on the sidelines during practice so you can work out what you feel is your special or I mean strong 4 or 5 players.

See you are an "ASSUMER" (to the Colony Parent this year) at no time did I say that Blogging or reading blogs means you have to much time on your hands. What is having to much time on your hands is knowing Pomona high school every passing league schedule and outcome and knowing the color of Coach Rice under pants and even worst being tired of Coach Rices "ANTICS". You are a Colony Parent, be that!!! If you hate Rice so much and he took 3 players with him, well that may be 2 excellent reasons for you celebrate, now your son may get some PT. Coach B is an awesome coach fous all this thought and energy toward helping him out, maybe you should join the coaching staff so you can see first and why your kid got limited playing time or why alot of kids don't get playing time no matter how much they are taught. High school is to prepare you for the real world and in the real world if you can;t cut it you eat last or don't eat at all. I guess what I'm trying to say is Rice is gone, long gone, no need to be tired of him, he is no longer apart of your life. We can't go back and reverse and not hire Rice to Colony and make the 3 kids go back to Colony. Let's move forward together. Let's Wish Rice and Pomona the best and Colony the best as well.

Coach Rice these people on here
