Garey running back Sothia Bun (6) is brought down by Montclair's Rudy Aguilar during the first quarter of Garey's 49-10 win Thursday night in its Mt. Baldy League opener. Bun rushed for 210 yards and 3 touchdowns on just 16 carries.

Based on what he had to say afterward, Montclair's Rick Ward can't be accused of taking Garey lightly in Thursday night's Mt. Baldy League opener. After the Vikings rolled up 42 first-half points in a 49-10 win over Montclair at Ganesha High, the Cavaliers head football coach more than included Garey in the conversation of Mt. Baldy League champion.

"A lot of people are going to see them coming in with 'Vikings' on the front of their jerseys and take them lightly," Ward said, "when they might be the best team in this league."

After compiling 188 yards on the ground last week, Garey's Sothia Bun ran for 210 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries. The senior likely was aided by the attention the Montclair defense paid to highly recruited receiver Dominique Williams. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound senior with scholarship offers from Boise State, Utah and Washington State to name a few still found the end zone twice, hauling in three receptions for 81 yards and a touchdown and running for a score playing quarterback in the wildcat formation to give Garey a 35-10 lead with 4:10 remaining in the first half.

"We knew everybody would be out here watching us tonight," Garey head coach Leonard Hudson said. "We wanted to make a statement. We think the sky is the limit for us this year."

With four automatic playoff berths available, now that the addition of Chino has expanded the league to seven teams, Garey (4-1, 1-0) has reason to feel good about its chances of earning a postseason berth for the first time since 2000. The Vikings didn't waste any time taking the first step against a Montclair team that began the season with two disheartening losses but bounced back to carry a two-game winning streak into league play.

The Cavaliers (2-3, 0-1) took a 3-0 lead in the first quarter but trailed 14-3 less than five minutes later. After Bun scored his first touchdown to finish a two-play 63-yard drive, the mere presence of Williams as the deep safety caused a directional punt that traveled just 16 yards before going out of bounds. Set up on the Montclair 35-yard line, Garey needed just seven plays before senior quarterback Tomas Michel scrambled 23 yards for a score with 25 seconds to play in the first quarter.

The first-year starter completed 7 of 13 passes for 155 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran seven times for 69 yards to add to the 282 yards Garey gained on the ground.

"We knew they wanted to take away Dominique," Hudson said. "But if you take that away it's going to open up something else."

Montclair cut the deficit to 14-10 but after a 56-yard touchdown run by Bun, Garey sandwiched a Montclair fumble with touchdowns that swelled the lead from 11 points to 25 in a 36-second span.

"Some of that stuff was them making plays but some of it was just us not executing," Ward said. "We're not going to roll anybody. We're going to be in a fight every week and we can't make mistakes like that.
"We're capable of winning five games in this league."
