The last two CIF-SS Central Division champions are the only remaining teams undefeated in the Baseline League, so much is on the line when CIF-SS Inland Division No. 3 Rancho Cucamonga (6-1, 2-0) takes on No. 7 Upland (5-2, 2-0) tonight at Los Osos High School.
Champions gala: Rancho Cucamonga went undefeated on its way to the 2008 CIF-SS Central Division title. Upland rode one of the best defensive units in the recent history of the Inland Valley to the 2009 CIF title.
Thus, there will be plenty of rings flashing under the Friday night lights but both of these teams are missing many of the players instrumental in bringing home those championships.
"The winner of this game is 3-0 and that's about it," Rancho Cucamonga coach Nick Baiz said. "That's all this game means."

The Los Osos High School football team has graduated 80 seniors combined in the last two seasons, several of which are playing on Saturdays. Their quarterback of two seasons ago, for example, started for UCLA Thursday night.
But without Richard Brehaut last season the Grizzlies earned a share of their fourth Baseline League title in the last five years and marched to the first CIF championship game appearance in school history. Having lost 38 more seniors last year from the most decorated team in Los Osos eight-year history, the Grizzlies don't appear to have dropped of much, if at all.
Los Osos is 4-3 with two of its three losses coming in overtime and all three to teams ranked in the top 10 of the CIF-SS Inland Division.
"We've made too many mistakes and I chalk that up to inexperience," Los Osos coach Tom Martinez said. "We're two overtime wins away from a much better record but I think the kids know what we're capable of."

Chino High School running back Xavier Browne (5) rushed for 85 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 62-yard TD pass.
The Chino High School football team's record included a zero at this time last year, but on the opposite side of the dash.
After a winless 2009, the Cowboys' improbable run continued Friday night with a 49-20 win over a Colony team that has won the Mt. Baldy League championship three of the last four years.
A Chino team that finished last in the Sierra League last season likely has cleared its biggest hurdle on the way to the Mt. Baldy League championship. And with three games left in the regular season, the Cowboys (7-0, 3-0) may have paved the way to go from 0-10 to 10-0.

When Chino hosts Colony tonight, it won't technically be the Mt. Baldy League championship game considering there are two games left in the season, but this battle between undefeated Chino and a Colony team that has won three of the last four league championships has significant implications.
Last year is long gone: You would never know Chino went 0-10 last year by the way the Cowboys (6-0, 2-0) are playing this season. After scoring 84 points all of last season, Chino has eclipsed the 40-point mark in each of its games this year, achieving an average margin of victory of 28.4 points.

Given that its league began play two games earlier this season, Diamond Ranch had to begin its annual turnaround a little earlier in 2010. No longer in the five-team Miramonte League, rather the seven-team Hacienda League, the Panthers have adjusted their schedule accordingly.
Despite an 0-3 start to the season - the Panthers began 2008 and 2009 with 1-6 records but finished each season with a CIF championship game appearance - Diamond Ranch has won its first three league games to position itself nicely for a stretch run at the Hacienda League title. Diamond Ranch trailed Walnut 21-0 at halftime but pulled off a 35-28 win in overtime Oct. 8 before exploding for 21 fourth-quarter points in a 35-14 victory over Rowland on Saturday.

With Glendora moving from the Sierra League to the Baseline League and Claremont from the Baseline to the Sierra, one would think the two schools can relate. Apparently that's not the case.
"This isn't the Sierra League Glendora was in," Claremont coach Mike Collins said. "It's a different league without Chino and Diamond Bar and with Charter Oak and South Hills."
In other words, an emerging Claremont team wasn't the only new addition to the new-look Sierra League. Gone are Chino and Diamond Bar, who are improved but posted a 1-19 combined record a season ago. Taking their place are Covina Charter Oak and West Covina South Hills programs who have six football CIF championships between them the last six years.
Those titles, however, were won in divisions lower than ones in which the Sierra League has been competing, begging the question, how will these storied programs measure up?

Defense meets offense in the Sierra League opener when Chino Hills (4-1), the No. 2 team in the CIF-SS Inland Division, travels to Claremont (4-1), an emerging team which sports one of the top passing offenses in Southern California.
The immovable object: Chino Hills' defense doesn't appear to have a weakness -- ask Rancho Santa Margarita Tesoro, Redlands East Valley, Pomona and Lakewood Mayfair. Against one of the most difficult nonleague schedules in the area, Chino Hills allowed just 13.4 points per game.
The Huskies secondary features two Division I recruits in Ifo Ekpre-Olomu and Nate Harris in addition to Scott Calles, who coach Derek Bub labeled vastly underrated. Wreaking havoc up front is 240-pound nose guard Auston Johnson.
Glendora entered the Baseline League this season with the proper requirements, which is to say they have a college-committed Division I quarterback. San Diego State-bound Chad Jeffries and the Tartans may be a year or two late meeting that qualification, but if the nonleague performance of the league's six teams is any indication the level of play still is up to par.
UCLA's Richard Brehaut and Stanford's Josh Nunes are two years removed from quarterbacking Los Osos and Upland, respectively, while Rancho Cucamonga graduate Greg Watson is a freshman at Fresno State and Etiwanda's Angel Santiago a freshman at Army.
Without their marquee quarterbacks, it's safe to say their programs are doing just fine.
Diamond Ranch running back Chase Price compiled 388 total yards and four touchdowns in a 35-28 double-overtime win over Walnut on Friday. The senior committed to San Diego State carried 35 times for 320 yards and a pair of touchdowns and added 68 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions, including a 47-yard TD catch that tied the game at 21 after the Panthers trailed 21-0 at the half.

The Ontario High School football team used to reward players for good games with helmet stickers. But that was eliminated this year as the Jaguars entered the 2010 season trying to reverse a nine-game losing streak.
"We don't do that anymore. We just play with the `O' on our helmets," Ontario coach Steve Randall said. "We had to make a lot of changes after last year."
The 'O' is the only thing associated with Ontario resembling a zero, though many anticipated one occupying the victory column for some time. The Jaguars were expected to struggle again this season. Their only victory last season came in the opener against a La Verne Lutheran team playing 11-man football for the first time. La Verne Lutheran abandoned its varsity schedule two games after Ontario's seven-point victory.

For the first time since 2003, Ontario downed Chaffey to capture the Cat Bowl.
It started with an 88-yard kickoff return touchdown by Joseph Davis and went on to be a 38-14 dominating victory on Thursday night.
The last time Ontario downed Chaffey to capture the Cat Bowl trophy it was Week 9 in 2003 and the Jaguars won 21-20 in overtime, also at Chaffey High. That year, Ontario's win enabled the Jaguars to finish the regular season in a three-way tie for the Mt. Baldy League title with Chaffey and Don Lugo.
That year, there was only one more week left in the regular season. This year, in the expanded seven-team league, this was just the league opener for Ontario. Garey (Week 8), Chino (Week 9) and Colony (Week 10) appear to be the biggest hurdles for the Jaguars to earn their first league title since -- you guessed it -- 2003.

Last season San Dimas and Baldwin Park met in the final game of the regular season to determine the Valle Vista League champion, with San Dimas emerging to not only take the league title but the CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division championship as well. The two teams play a little earlier this season and with records not as shiny as the 8-1 mark with which each entered last season's clash, but a league championship could be on the line just the same when they meet Friday at San Dimas.
Schedule changes: San Dimas (3-2) and Baldwin Park (1-4) may not win any beauty contests at this point but difficult nonleague schedules in 2010 may have each playing better than last season.

When surveying the numbers of the Claremont High School football team, it's easy to get distracted by those other than in the win column.
After enduring a two-year stretch during which it won a total of two games, the Wolfpack has started its second consecutive season with four wins in its first five games. It's the statistics compiled by quarterback Daniel Kessler and his receiving tandem of Tanner Kuramata and Aaron Dockery, however, that are much more fun to talk about.
Kessler, a three-year starter, is the second leading passer in a CIF-Southern Section that consists of 567 schools. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound senior has thrown for 1,513 yards -- three less than Cerritos Gahr's D.J. Lopez, according to maxpreps.com.
Kuramata and Dockery rank No. 1 and 2 in the Inland Valley in receiving yardage at 120 and 103 yards per game, respectively.

Diamond Ranch QB Cesar Carillo (8) only had to throw six passes thanks to the running back duo of Chase Price (25 carries, 215 yards, 3 TDs) and Jacoby Carter (8-146, TD) who carried the Panthers to a 41-0 win over Diamond Bar Friday night.
Historically, when games matter most the Diamond Ranch High School football team is at its best. Friday night's game didn't provide the typical postseason motivation that has driven the Panthers to back to back CIF championship game appearances, rather, it was a specific opponent that raised the stakes. For the first time since Diamond Ranch opened in 1997, the Panthers lined up on a football field across from neighboring Diamond Bar. The Panthers made it count, emerging with a 41-0 win in the Hacienda League opener for both teams at Ganesha High.
After a typical slow start for Diamond Ranch (2-3, 1-0) this year and an atypical fast start for Diamond Bar (4-1, 0-1), which went 1-9 last season, the combination of pride, playoff position and 23 year-old itch made for quite the atmosphere Friday night.
"We wanted to win like this," Diamond Ranch Roddy Layton said. "This game wasn't about the rest of our league, it was just about Diamond Bar High. Now the hard part is convincing the team they've got to wake up tomorrow and play a game next week that matters just as much as this one."

The Hacienda League is doing its best to indicate how the multitude of contenders in its possession stack up prior to the opening of league play tonight. It's using the CIF-SS Southeast Division rankings as its own personal leaderboard.
Though it's just one of four leagues populating the division, the newly formed Hacienda League occupied five of the top 10 spots in the latest CIF rankings, including three of the top four. In other words, league play may not be the only time this group will face each other this season.
Coincidentally, up to five teams from the league could make the playoffs, given the four automatic playoff berths provided by the seven-team Hacienda League and the one at-large berth afforded by the Southeast Division.
In a potential playoff preview, Redlands East Valley (3-0), the fourth-ranked team in the CIF-SS Inland Division, takes on No. 5 Chino Hills (3-1) tonight.
Star power: Chino Hills possesses the most marquee players in this matchup, but Redlands East Valley may have the most evenly spread talent.
Chino Hills' Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is the headliner in this matchup. The senior with scholarship offers from nearly all of the Pac-10 was moved from slot receiver to running back this season in an effort to get the ball in his hands as much as possible. The opposition in 2010 has accordingly made some adjustments.
