It was not a huge surprise that Cajon defeated Etiwanda on Friday in the championship game of the Ayala Best of the West Tournament.
After all, Cajon (16-0) is undefeated for a reason. How they did it was another matter.
Trailing 18-4 in the first quarter and 34-17 in the second, the Cowgirls figured out Etiwanda's press and rallied, eventually taking a 63-60 victory at Ayala High School.
"We wanted to finish this year undefeated," Cajon coach Mark Lehman said on New Year's Eve. "Now we want to go undefeated next year."
After Etiwanda (11-2) closed to within 63-60 on a Jada Blackwell (15 points) 3-pointer with about 20 seconds to play, Etiwanda had two more possessions. One resulted in a turnover, the other in a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer that missed everything.
Shannon Moore was impressive in the rally for Cajon, scoring 10 of her team-high 14 points in the second half. Kori Walker had 10 of her 12 in the second half, Angelica Guardado scored 12 and Sophia Bhasin scored all 10 of her points in the second half.
Etiwanda led 52-49 on a basket by Met Onogomuho (game-high 16 points) with 4:54 to play, but a 14-5 run by the Cowgirls gave them the upper hand.
Etiwanda's efforts were hurt at the point guard position. Rachel Williams got in early foul trouble and was not as effective as usual. The other point guard, senior Angelique Bailey, suffered a partially torn meniscus in the first game of the tournament and is expected to miss another week.

Damien water polo coach Gates retires

Andrew Gates listened with a keen ear to University of Florida head football coach Urban Meyer's retirement announcement Dec. 8. For nearly identical reasons Gates made a retirement announcement of his own the previous night, stepping down as Damien's water polo coach after 13 years.

"It was funny the next day hearing (Meyer) say he had two daughters that played Division I volleyball and he had never neen them play," Gates said. "My kids are eight and 10. Coaching year round is a big commitment. It's tough to leave the team but I need to be the man at home with my own kids."

It took the Wildomar Elsinore High School football team 83 seasons and five trips to the title game to secure its first CIF championship. Summit will have to wait until its sixth season for another shot at its first.

Summit ran just 13 offensive plays in the second half as Elsinore's ground game milked the clock on the way to securing a 21-7 win over the SkyHawks Saturday night in the CIF-SS Eastern Division championship game.

Summit (10-3-1) was only outgained by 49 yards but a first-half fake punt gone bad and an interception in the end zone that ended the SkyHawks final fourth-quarter drive were too much to overcome given Elsinore's glaring advantage in time of possession.

"We needed some more offense to stay on the field," Summit coach Tony Barile said. "You give them the opportunity to pound the ball, the opportunity to run the clock, they're going to hurt you."

It's less than 2 weeks into the wrestling season, but there are already individual wrestling rankings out for the state.
According to www.thecaliforniawrestler.com, here are the Inland Valley's current wrestlers ranked in the top 20 in the state:
103: Anthony Soto, Colony (No. 20).
119: Tim Maldonado, Los Osos (No. 16)
160: Jonathan Solano, Los Osos (No. 17)
Heavyweight: Brian Ryu, Diamond Bar (No. 8).

Corona Centennial quaterback Micahel Eubank (18) is brought down short of the goalline by Chino Hills' Ifo Ekpre-Olomu (rear), Steven Smith (15) and Adrian Brunson (32) during the first quarter Friday night in Chino Hills.

Not that it's much consolation, but Chino Hills did something no team had done to Corona Centennial all season. It lost by only 19 points.

Centennial, the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Inland Division, led a game fourth-seeded Chino Hills squad by just five points in the fourth quarter Friday night but pulled away for a 42-23 win to advance to next week's CIF final. The previous smallest margin of victory this season for Centennial (13-0), ranked sixth in the country by Maxpreps.com, was 29 points.

A Centennial team averaging over 55 points per game didn't compile its usual outlandish offensive totals but 6-foot-5 quarterback Michael Eubank threw for 205 yards and a score and rushed for 122 and a touchdown. After a 300-yard day in the second round, running back Barrinton Collins had 64 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.

It's the old versus the new as mainstay Serrano (11-1), the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Division, hosts a CIF-SS semifinal against up-and-coming Summit (9-2-1), which that finished second in the Sunkist League to No. 1 seed Kaiser.

Clash of styles: Serrano and Summit have one thing in common - they'll both be on the football field tonight. That is practically where it ends. Serrano plays an old school brand of disciplined, physical football evidenced right down to the large group of players that hardly ever leave the field seeing as they play offense, defense and special teams.

"They're the most disciplined team I've seen in a long time," Summit head coach Tony Barile said. "They're always in the right place. I guess that only helps me out in that I know where they're going to be. They're the type of team that will manufacture a few scores and get out with a 14-7 win against most teams"

The seeds have held true to form as No. 3 seed Rancho Cucamonga has advanced to Saturday's CIF-SS Inland Division semifinals to face a second-seeded Vista Murrieta team looking to make a second consecutive appearance in the CIF championship game.

Championship aspirations: There is plenty of playoff experience in this game as Rancho Cucamonga is two years removed from a CIF-SS Central Division championship while Vista Murrieta reached the Inland Division title game last season only to lose a tight game to Southwestern League foe Chaparral.

Baseline League champ Rancho Cucamonga went undefeated en route to a 2008 CIF championship before losing to Los Osos in the semifinals last season. The Cougars graduated their quarterback, running back and most of their defense from last season but a young 2010 squad has been up to the challenge at every turn this season.

Juggernaut Corona Centennial (12-0), the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Inland Division, will take on fourth-seeded Chino Hills (10-2) tonight for the right to play in next week's CIF-SS INland Division finals. In the semifinals for the second season in a row - albeit in the much tougher Inland Division as opposed to last year's Central Division - Chino Hills will host a Centennial team that hasn't played a game decided by less than 29 points all season.

55.9 is not a misprint: Yes, Corona Centennial is averaging 55.9 points per game, a total that dropped last week after a 52-23 win over an Upland team that allowed 10.7 points per game on its way to last season's CIF-SS Central Division championship. Centennial has yet to be held under 44 points this season behind the duo of quarterback Michael Eubank and running back Barrinton Collins.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Eubank, who has thrown for 2,300 yards and 20 touchdowns, was intercepted for just the second time this season against Upland. He is 28 yards shy of 1,000 rushing yards with 17 touchdowns. The 5-foot-9, 185-pound Collins has 1,929 yards and a whopping 34 touchdowns on the ground. They combined for 646 total yards last week.

The brackets for the Inland Empire Invitational boys basketball tournament Dec. 13-18 have been released and the event hosted by Upland, Colony, Rancho Cucamonga and Miller High Schools will feature a 16-team field including four defending league champions, seven teams that reached the quarterfinals and three that reached the semifinals of last season's CIF-SS playoffs.

Etiwanda, which lost a three-point game to Santa Ana Mater Dei in the CIF-SS Division 1AA finals last season returns most of its team to the I.E. Invitational. In a pool with the defending Baseline League champs will be Miller, Perris and Vista Murrieta.

Garey wide receiver Dominique Williams has not verbally committed to Washington State as reported by rivals.com and scout.com, according to Garey head football coach Leonard Hudson. The 6-foot-4 senior is strongly considering Washington State after his initial recruiting trip to Pullman Wash., in early October but Utah and Fresno State are also high on his list, according to Hudson.

"Those three are the ones we talked about a few days ago," Husdon said. "Nebraska came in but I don't know if he wants to go there. There are some other Big 12 schools he's interested in and some Pac-10s too so he's playing the waiting game a little bit."

Williams was hampered the last half of the season by a an strained plantar fascia, a tendon that runs under the ball of his foot, but still managed 18 touchdowns in leading Garey to its first playoff appearance in 10 years. After a junior season in which he had 45 receptions for 1,213 yards and 10 touchdowns, Williams began pulling in enough scholarship offers that Hudson has lost count.
