Gone are the days when the San Dimas High School football team won its Valle Vista League games by an average of 34 points. Though it was only two years ago when the Saints mowed down their first three league opponents by a combined score of 126-0 on the way to the schools' first CIF football championship, much changed last season.

San Dimas didn't just lose out on the league title, it finished third in 2010. After dropping a dramatic game to Baldwin Park, the Saints had a chance to earn a share of the league title but fell to Covina, the same team that happens to be currently ranked one spot ahead of them entering Valle Vista League play tonight.

Fresh off a victory over defending CIF-SS Mid-Valley champion Monrovia, San Dimas (3-1) has risen to No. 3 in the CIF rankings, but league foe Covina (3-1) is resting comfortably at No. 2.

"Covina is looking to be a league champion and a CIF champion as well," San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow said. "They're very good and their program has been doing well at the lower levels too."

Only two teams from the CIF-SS Southeast Division played 14 games last season. They both hail from the Hacienda League.

Bonita and West Covina played twice in 2010, once for the Hacienda League championship and once for the CIF title. West Covina walked away with all the hardware, though it took a late drive to earn a 37-33 win in the Southeast Division championship game.

With Hacienda League play beginning this week, West (3-1) Covina again sits atop the Southeast Division rankings, but the difference this season is Bonita is the league's only other team to grace the top 10. Six squads from the seven-team league formed last year spent time in the 2010 rankings.

One of the best nonleague games of the season pits Los Angeles Loyola (4-0), the seventh-ranked team in the CIF-SS Pac-5 Division, against an Upland (4-0) team ranked third in the Inland Division.

Rematch: Loyola emerged a 30-13 winner when these two teams met last year and Upland coach Tim Salter is convinced Loyola is better than it was last year. Of course, Upland is clearly improved from the team that finished second in the Baseline League last year and exited the playoffs in the quarterfinals.

Loyola lost to Newport Harbor and Bellflower St. John Bosco last year. Already this season the Cubs have shutout Newport Harbor and won a 28-14 game over St. John Bosco, the No. 8 team in the Pac-5 Division.

Matt Bechtel can recall the date without hesitation, yet another thing that hasn't changed since the beginning of high school football season.

Oct. 28, the Colony High School football coach said, is when he expects the Mt. Baldy League race to be decided. That happens to be when defending league champion Chino pays a visit to Colony.

Chino and Colony entered the season as the league favorites. As league play begins tonight, nothing has changed.

"Chino is the defending league champion so they've got to be the team to beat," Bechtel said. "We're pleased with where we are and honestly I think we'll play Chino for the league championship."

Rivals D-Ranch, D-Bar upping the stakes

The high school football game between Diamond Ranch and Diamond Bar on Oct. 7 will have more at stake this season than just a Hacienda League victory. The city of Diamond Bar is introducing the inaugural Mayor's Cup, a trophy that will be awarded to the winner of the matchup at Diamond Bar High School next week, with Mayor Steve Tye doing the honors.

The schools played each other last year -- a 41-0 Diamond Ranch victory -- for the first time since Diamond Ranch coach Roddy Layton took over six years ago. Layton, whose team hails from Pomona, attempted to schedule the Brahmas to no avail until they landed in the Hacienda League last season.

"Sports, particularly when they involve youth, have a way of bringing the community together," Tye said. "The Mayor's Cup is a means for celebrating that togetherness."

Now the Alta Loma High School football team can act like it's been here before.
Following its first win in two years and 21 games, a 38-0 victory over Montclair on Sept. 9, Alta Loma head coach Joe Szczepanski noted that his players were a little unsure of how to react. Go crazy? Take it in stride?

It was understandably odd that following two winless seasons the Braves ended the losing streak with such little drama that by the end of the blowout the celebratory vibe had somewhat subsided.

Friday night the Braves (2-2) did it again and this time they knew exactly how to react. Alta Loma handily defeated Ontario, 37-12, and will attempt to push its record above .500 when it takes on Granite Hills Friday at Chaffey High School.

"We had a few goals coming into the season and now we've won a game," Szczepanski said. "We won another one to show it's not a fluke. Now we want to go after a winning record. I told the players we got this monkey off our back and now we have to move forward."

The Diamond Ranch High School football team took efficiency to unprecedented levels Thursday night. Without a single possession in the game's first 19 minutes, the Panthers managed to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish in a 29-6 victory over Chaffey.

Recovering an errant punt snap in Chaffey's end zone was the only positive play for Diamond Ranch (1-3) of the game's first 32. Having taken the field for the first time with 3:39 left in the first half, its safe to say the Panthers offense will be well rested heading into its Hacienda League opener against Bonita.

Diamond Ranch secured its first win of the season at the expense of a Chaffey that has lost three strait asit heads into Mt. Baldy League play next week.

"They're a good football team who could have beaten Damien, could have beaten Elsinore last week," Chaffey coach Chris Brown said of Diamond Ranch, which has lost its last two games by seven points. "But our offense was good tonight. We were able to control the ball a little bit."

San Dimas won't let its season be smudged

Imagine beginning the season with a playoff game. Imagine losing that game. Season's over, right?

That's probably what it felt like for the San Dimas High School football team after losing to Bonita Sept. 1 in the annual Smudge Pot game, arguably the most meaningful on the schedule prior to December. Scheduled for Week 0 this year, the rivalry game not only went in favor of Bonita, the Bearcats gave a rude awakening to a San Dimas team with championship aspirations, 40-20.

"With the emotion involved in that type of game, a lot of guys could have thrown in the towel," San Dimas coach Bill Zernickow said. "But there was no complaining, no moping. They just said, `Let's clean this up."'

The Etiwanda High School football team dropped below .500 Friday night, but that may be the only bad thing that's happened in its first three games. The Eagles came up short against another Inland Division titan, a 42-36 loss to Norco at Colony High School, but nobody had anything negative to say about either team.

"They're a semifinal team in our division," Norco coach Todd Gerhart said of Etiwanda. "I just hope they're not on our side of the bracket. They gave Vista Murrieta two touchdowns last week, a blocked punt and a fumble, and still barely lost."

Etiwanda (1-2) opened the season by blowing out a Summit team ranked No. 1 in the Eastern Division, followed with a 31-28 loss to Vista Murrieta on a last-second field goal and led Norco 30-28 at the half before coming up short in a dramatic game against a team that has won multiple CIF-SS Inland Division titles the last five years.

The Damien and Chaffey High School football teams both played a diverse lineup Thursday night in an effort to evaluate talent early in the season. They just did it under entirely different circumstances.

Damien scored on each of its eight possessions in a 52-6 win at Chaffey that featured touchdowns by five different players and scoring passes by two different quarterbacks. More importantly, a Spartans team head coach Greg Gano labeled the best of his three-year tenure before the season played the way he would have liked a week ago in a season-opening 13-6 win over Diamond Ranch.

"We needed to put somebody away because they weren't sure of themselves," Gano said. "We needed to play tougher going into next week."

These schools will clash for the fourth consecutive season as Serrano looks to avenge three straight losses to the Highlanders. Upland, ranked third in the CIF-SS Inland Division after a 2-0 start, again looks formidable. As usual Serrano (2-0) is fielding a championship-caliber team as the Diamondbacks are ranked No. 4 in the Eastern Division.

Testing the discipline: Though Serrano would prefer to see as little of it as possible, the most compelling matchup of tonight's game figures to be Upland's talented offense opposite Serrano's disciplined defense.

The Highlanders feature one of the best receivers in California in Kenny Lawler, who has 10 receptions for 211 yards in two games. Dual-threat junior quarterback Nate Romine has completed 72 percent of his passes for 307 yards and four touchdowns without an interception.

Upland Christian is partnering with Bishop Amat to form an ice hockey team that will compete in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.

This week the 19-member team, made up roughly half Upland Christian players and half Bishop Amat players, will begin a 14-game schedule played on Saturdays in a league that began with one team in 2008 and added three members in the offseason to grow to a combined total of 11 varsity and junior varsity teams.

Upland Christian/Bishop Amat will compete in the junior varsity division this season beginning with Saturday's season opener against Anaheim Servite. Damien, which joined last season, is the only other team in the ADHSHL from the Inland Empire.

Free concussion testing and education software for high schools, middle schools and youth athletic associations is being offered through Dick's Sporting Goods.

Software for ImPACT, the most-widely used computerized concussion evaluation system, will be provided for schools that sign up through the Dick's Sporting Goods Website. Visit
www.DicksSportingGoods.com/PACE and enter your school's information under the Submit Your School tab on the left side of the screen.

A 20-minute baseline test is to be administered prior to play in order for comparison later if a concussion is suspected.

Claremont receiver Andrei Tarankow pushes off Bonita's Garrett Horine (23) during the second quarter of Claremont's 18-15 win.

When a backup quarterback scores a team's first offensive touchdown in the fourth quarter, it's usually a sign that the outcome has long since been decided.

With Bonita, the No. 2 team in the CIF-SS Southeast Division, taking on a Claremont team that graduated 18 starters from last year's team, it looked as if plenty had decided the winner before Friday night's game began. But thanks to a gritty effort by its defense and some late field position, it was Claremont that emerged with an 18-15 victory over Bonita.
The Wolfpack (2-0) gained just 191 yards, 73 of which came on a reception that preceded a blocked field goal.

Dylan Kegans connected on two field goals and Claremont's two touchdowns consisted of an 87-yard interception return by Stan Reeder late in the first half and a 13-yard scamper by shifty backup quarterback Paul Manus for the go-ahead touchdown with 7:02 to play.

Ayala's Jared McNeely, center, is tackled by Colony defense during the Titans' 14-9 victory Thursday night.

ONTARIO - The irony wasn't lost on anybody.

Colony turned the ball over seven times Thursday night. With Ayala driving for its second touchdown of the last six minutes - and of the game - it was a turnover Colony received that sealed the Titans' 14-9 victory over the Bulldogs.

"This was the ugliest football game you'll ever witness on any level," Bechtel said. "We preach the little things. We preach ball security. And none of that happened."

Colony (2-0) fumbled a grand total of nine times. It lost six of them in addition to a muffed punt that led to Ayala's only points until the game's final seven minutes.

Coming off fantastic 2010 seasons, Bonita (1-0) and Claremont (1-0) began 2011 with a step toward proving they have ample replacements for their departed stars. Bonita, the No. 2 team in the CIF-SS Southeast Division, rolled to a 20-point victory over San Dimas while Claremont rallied for a win over La Palma Kennedy.

Not looking back at quarterback: The biggest shoes to fill at both schools are at quarterback after the departure of Claremont 3,500-yard passer Daniel Kessler and Bonita's Garrett Pendleton, who led the Bearcats to the CIF-SS Southeast Division championship game and threw for 2,000 yards despite missing the first four games of the season.

Claremont's Gabe Schaper wasn't expecting to be the starter until junior Matt Simko transferred in July. The senior's first pass attempt as a starter was a 76-yard touchdown and his last an 18-yard go-ahead touchdown pass with 1:54 remaining in the 24-20 victory.

Alta Loma's new baseball coach, Tim Burton, was approved by the school board Tuesday night and officially took over the program this week after Ted Persell, who coached the Braves for the last eight seasons, resigned in May.

Burton's coaching experience has been primarily in the collegiate ranks with stints at USC, Riverside Community College and, most recently, Cal Poly Pomona, where he has spent a total of six years as an assistant. He hopes to step into the deep Baseline League and maintain a quality program at Alta Loma.

"I think there's a good enough mix of returning players and newcomers that we'll be competitive here," Burton, 37, said. "This is a rich league we're in, but I'm excited about what we've got."

We probably didn't need a press release to discover that there is no shortage of transfers in the CIF-Southern Section. In August alone, there were 517 documented transfers, according to the press release, 325 valid changes of residence. There were 74 foreign student transfers and 61 hardships with another 47 pending. The grand total adds up to 1,024 in one month. Just to add a little context, there are 581 schools in the CIF-SS.

Though August would seem a natural month to transfer seeing as it's when most schools begin classes, things don't appear to be slowing down in September. In the first two days of the month, there were a total of 191 transfers in the CIF-SS.

There was no lockout that prevented high school football players from readying themselves for the 2011 season that opened for many Friday night. As their coaches attested to after the game, the Summit and Etiwanda football teams weren't exactly in midseason form, but it made for plenty of fireworks as Etiwanda took home a 49-36 win over Summit, the top- ranked team in the CIF-SS Eastern Division.

The victory was about the only thing Etiwanda coach Steve Bryce was pleased with.

"We made every mistake in the book," Bryce said, "but I'll take this win over a very talented team. Summit is loaded with talent and they're a good football team, especially in their division, but this is not the effort we wanted."

Bonita has a lot to live up to after last season's run to the CIF-SS Southeast Division championship game. With 190 players out for football, the most in coach Eric Podley's 12-year tenure, the Bearcats may do it. They'll have to deal with the loss of quarterback Garrett Pendleton, who threw for 2,000 yards, 22 touchdowns and five interceptions despite missing the first four games of the season.

In all Bonita is replacing 16 departed starters but the most interesting battle for a starting job is at quarterback between talented sophomore Tanner Diebold and the experienced senior Aaron Burgett.
