Upland Christian forming ice hockey team
Upland Christian is partnering with Bishop Amat to form an ice hockey team that will compete in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.
This week the 19-member team, made up roughly half Upland Christian players and half Bishop Amat players, will begin a 14-game schedule played on Saturdays in a league that began with one team in 2008 and added three members in the offseason to grow to a combined total of 11 varsity and junior varsity teams.
Upland Christian/Bishop Amat will compete in the junior varsity division this season beginning with Saturday's season opener against Anaheim Servite. Damien, which joined last season, is the only other team in the ADHSHL from the Inland Empire.
"It's going to be a high school experience as opposed to a club experience," Upland Christian athletic director Mark Edgemon said. "The band will be there. The cheerleaders will be there. We want it to be like a Friday night football or basketball game."
The team's formation can be credited to a group of parents from Upland Christian and Bishop Amat who were connected by their children's club hockey teams, according to Edgemon. Through their efforts the two schools had come to an agreement to create the joint team by the spring of 2011. Jerseys will be presented to the players in a ceremony today. The home jerseys will feature the Bishop Amat logo and the away jerseys the Upland Christian logo.
