In a bid for its second consecutive CIF-SS Inland Division championship, No. 1 seed Corona Centennial pays a visit to Rancho Cucamonga, which didn't exit the playoffs until double overtime of the semifinals last season.

The juggernaut: Corona Centennial is the football program by which all others in the Inland Empire are measured. The Huskies have the numbers to prove it every season and this one is no different.

Centennial, whose only loss was a season-opening two-point defeat by Ventura St. Bonaventure, is averaging 46.8 points per game and 489 yards per game. The Big VIII League champions, who list 116 players on their roster, haven't scored less than 45 points since a 28-20 win over Santa Ana Mater Dei in the second week of the season.

"We respect the heck out of them," Rancho Cucamonga coach Nick Baiz said. "But we're not going to bow down and hope to keep it close. We want to beat them. I don't think you can come into the semifinals in awe of your opponent."

It might not have been quite as good a race as they had hoped, but it was still very good.
The Rancho Cucamonga High boys cross country team finished third in Division 1 at the CIF State Championships on Saturday in Fresno, the best finish in school history.
Later on Saturday, coach Terry Tierney was informed that the Cougars got one of four bids from the state to run next week at prestigious Nike Nationals in Portland, Oregon.
"We had a better team time than the Division 2 champion," Tierney said. "After the power merge, we were behind them, but we both got to go."
The event, including travel expenses, is paid for by Nike.
It's a complicated process to earn a bid to Nationals that goes beyond team time or team score.
After all the divisions run Saturday, they take many of the top teams and "merge" the times together. Then they take the top few teams after that merge and merge them again, and find the top four teams. California gets two automatically, but there are also two at-large berths and California got those as well.
The top three teams in Division 1 got to go (Rancho Cucamonga, Mission Viejo Trabuco Hills and Arcadia) as did the top team in Division 2 (Santa Clarita Golden Valley).

The Baseline League has experienced an intraleague CIF championship game twice in the last three years. Of course, both of those occurrences were in a Central Division devoid of Corona Centennial and Vista Murrieta, among others.

This season, Baseline League champion Upland and second-place Rancho Cucamonga, whose only loss this season came to Upland, find themselves one win away from playing each other for a title in the Inland Division.

Third-seeded Upland, which demolished Sierra League champion Charter Oak, 51-13, in the quarterfinals, faces off with No. 2 seed Vista Murrieta on Friday. Rancho Cucamonga, which took Vista Murrieta to double overtime in last year's semifinal, faces top-seeded Corona Centennial in the other semifinal following a 9-6 defeat of fourth-seeded Redlands East Valley.

The CIF State Championships for cross country take place on Saturday at Woodward Park in Fresno. Unlike previous years, I will not be there. Ace reporter J.P. Hoornstra will be there instead.

Here is a look at the Inland Valley teams/individuals that will be competing:
Division 1 boys, 12:20 p.m.
Rancho Cucamonga

The Cougars were ranked No. 1 in the state last week before finishing second at CIF-SS Finals. As well as Arcadia ran last week, it will take a vast improvement by Rancho Cucamonga and a drop off by Arcadia to win, but second place would still be impressive. This is the fourth straight year at state for the team, and for seniors Luis Gutierrez and Calvin Davis, who were on the varsity as freshmen. Senior Jon Dileva is also one of the team's top runners.
Division 2 boys, 11:15 a.m.
Ayala

For the longest time, Ayala's girls had the better reputation, but this is the third time in the last five years the boys are going. The boys finished fourth last week and will have to run well to maintain that position.
Division 2 girls, 12:50 p.m.
Colony

The Colony girls have had Xochitl Navarrete and Valerie Mares go as individuals before, but never had their team go. The Titans are happy to be there after finishing seventh and grabbing the last qualifying spot, so just running a solid race is a good goal.
Division 3 boys, 1:25 p.m.
Damien

The Spartans were a contender for state last year, but came up short. Now, they're back for the first time since 2003. Three seniors are among the Spartans' top 5, but junior Doug Negrete was the top runner last week, taking 19th at CIF-SS Finals
Division 3 girls, 11:45 a.m.
Bonita

This is the third straight trip to state for junior Marissa Scott, but the first with teammates around her. Scott was 25th last year after taking 42nd as a freshman. Coach Lonny Carr wasn't altogether pleased initially with finishing 7th at CIF-SS Finals, but also relieved the team qualified for the first time since 2005.

Nick Baiz was assuredly not the only one praying.

Trailing by five points with 6.6 seconds remaining in a CIF-SS Inland Division first-round playoff game, the Rancho Cucamonga High School football coach had his request answered when Marcus Bratton hauled in a Hail Mary to breathe life back into the Cougars season with a 39-38 win over Chino Hills on Friday night.

Rancho Cucamonga (10-1) drove 70 yards in the final 26 seconds, punctuating the game-winning drive when Bratton hauled in the 38-yard jump ball a yard inside the back of the end zone to complete an 11-point comeback in the final five minutes.

"All I saw was the ball hit my hands," Bratton said. "I looked up, tried to spot it. I just squeezed it. It's indescribable."

These two teams reached the semifinals in the CIF-SS Inland Division last season, but haven't played since a first-round playoff game in 2005. This pair of second-place teams is sporting plenty of playoff experience that could carry the winner of tonight's game a long way.

Recent success: Both of these teams won their leagues last season before marching to the semifinals of a competitive Inland Division where they lost to the top two seeds. Chino Hills played top-seeded Corona Centennial its closest game to date in a 42-23 loss while Rancho Cucamonga went down in double-overtime to second-seeded Vista Murrieta.

"It's not like we're just happy to be in the playoffs," Rancho Cucamonga coach Nick Baiz said. "We expect to win some games. We've been here before and they have too."

Summit High School isn't the new kid on the block anymore.

One season after reaching the CIF championship game, in its sixth season of existence the SkyHawks achieved arguably the most significant regular season feat possible for a football team in San Bernardino County.

Summit's 21-7 win over Kaiser Friday night at Miller High School halted the Cats' streak at 10 consecutive Sunkist League championships. The loss was just Kaiser's second in league play since the run began in 2001.

Kaiser (7-3, 4-1) was on its way to a sixth straight league title during Summit's humble beginnings, an 0-10 campaign in its first varsity season. After losing by an average of 44 points per game in 2006, the SkyHawks (9-1, 5-0) are the No. 1 team in their league and the CIF-SS Eastern Division.

Aram Tolegian of the San Gabriel Valley Tribune is reporting that Charter Oak quarterback Travis Santiago sprained his ankle when he stepped on his helmet prior to practice yesterday and is unlikely to play tonight against Chino Hills for the Sierra League championship. By all accounts Santiago is the driving force behind the Chargers' push for a league title that is vitally important to a program that struggled last season in its debut in the Sierra League and CIF-SS Inland Division. The senior who has thrown for 2,336 yards with 19 TDs and three interceptions was placed in a walking boot and given crutches, but there is still a chance he will play.

The Chino Hills High School football team provides the perfect proving ground for Covina Charter Oak when the two teams meet tonight for the Sierra League championship. Charter Oak (8-1, 4-0) will have a chance to defeat the reigning power in the league, a three time defending champion that reached the semifinals of the CIF-SS Inland Division playoffs last season.

The Chargers, conversely, finished third last season and exited the playoffs in the first round via a 21-point loss. Charter Oak's first season in both the Sierra League and the Inland Division is indeed a small sample size, but that's not stopping the doubters from proclaiming that the program's success in a lower division simply won't translate.

There was ample hype when a program fresh off consecutive CIF-SS Southeast Division championships joined one of the toughest divisions in Southern California last season.
Was 2010 just a down season for Charter Oak? Was Chino Hills peaking last year? Those questions can go a long way toward being answered tonight.

"We know how much this game means to them," Chino Hills coach Derek Bub said. "We know that we're pretty talented and we've won the league championship three years in a row. We know the league championship goes through Chino Hills and we have a target on our backs."

Final week football playoff scenarios

SUNKIST LEAGUE
Unlike its college counterpart, given the absence of super conferences in high school football the opportunity for true league championship games isn't often presented.
With one week remaining in the regular season, two such games have fallen into place.

Kaiser (7-2, 4-0) has twice as many consecutive Sunkist League championships as Summit does years of existence as a football program, but Summit (8-1, 4-0) is the team ranked No. 1 in the CIF-SS Eastern Division heading into Friday's showdown with its rival. Kaiser has recovered from two lopsided losses early in the season to win six consecutive games and now sits a win away from an 11th straight league championship. In fact the Cats have lost just one league game during their incomparable run.

Summit, however, has plenty of reasons to believe it will beat Kaiser for the first time in the six-year history of the program and secure its first ever league championship. In fact, Summit outlasted Kaiser in the playoffs last season when the Cats were the No. 1 seed but Summit reached the CIF-SS Eastern Division championship game where it lost a 21-7 game to Wildomar Elsinore. During a two-month stretch in which it was won eight games in a row, Summit has scored at least 35 points each game and allowed an average of 4.1 points per game.

The battle for sole possession of first place in the Baseline League pits Upland (8-0, 3-0), the No. 3 team in the CIF-SS Inland Division, against Los Osos (6-2, 3-0).

Game of the Year: These two teams played the game of the year last season when Upland twice came back from two-touchdown deficits to win, 41-38, on a late field goal. The victory awarded Upland second place and dropped Los Osos out of the playoffs for the first time the school's first varsity season in 2003.

Los Osos won at least a share of the Baseline League title four of the last five years before finishing fourth last season. The Grizzlies lost two-touchdown leads on both Upland and Etiwanda last season and lost to league champion Rancho Cucamonga by one in overtime.

Diamond Ranch's Chris Miller verbally committed to Oregon State on Monday after receiving a written scholarship offer from Beavers head football coach Mike Riley, according to Diamond Ranch coach Roddy Layton. Miller, a 6-foot-1, 195-pound athlete, plays both running back and safety for Diamond Ranch. Washington, who has also shown interest in Miller, was coming on strong around the same time Oregon State made the senior his first offer.

Small school football doesn't present coaches with many options. Ontario Christian's Scott Hurst uses all of his.

There are 27 players on the roster. None play offense and defense.

"When you have a guy play both ways there is someone behind him who may be a little bit of a drop- off," Hurst said. "But if you let one guy play each position, he really takes ownership of it. And you don't have to worry about the fatigue."

Whatever Hurst is doing in his first season at Ontario Christian, a school with an enrollment of 510 students, it's working.
