Aaron Jamieson has been approved as the new head football coach at Pomona High School, according to athletic director Joe Biagioni. Jamieson was an assistant at Pomona the last two years under Anthony Rice, who resigned Jan. 13.

"Aaron is a good coach with a lot of energy," Biagioni said. "He is also a very good teacher as well. He has the background and experience and is ready to be a head coach. The fact that Aaron has been a part of the staff and foundation that Anthony Rice has established will help make the transition smoother."

Jamieson was an assistant at Carter from 2005-2007 before joining Rice's staff at Colony in 2008 to coach defensive backs and running backs. In addition to coaching the Red Devils, Jamieson has been a teacher at Pomona the last two years.

There wasn't a field goal in the last two minutes and 41 seconds of the Etiwanda High School girls basketball team's playoff game against top-seeded Long Beach Poly, but there was plenty of action.

Etiwanda committed four turnovers and gave up three offensive rebounds during the furious final stretch as Long Beach Poly grinded out a 53-48 victory over the eighth-seeded Eagles in the CIF-SS Division 1AA quarterfinals.

Junior Keyla Morgan hoisted the Jackrabbits (27-2) on her back, scoring all of her team-high 15 points in the second half, including a 3-pointer with 3:10 to play that pulled her team within one. Her steal on the ensuing Etiwanda possession led to a breaking lay-up that gave Long Beach Poly a 49-48 lead with 2:42 remaining in the game.

The degree of difficulty alone makes it hard to believe anything about Aubrielle Camacho's game-winning goal was planned.

The easy part was running the designed play to get in position, but the Los Osos High School sophomore midfielder flawlessly executed the hard part, propelling a 30-yard laser of a shot into the top corner of the goal with three minutes remaining in the second overtime to give the Grizzlies girls soccer team a 2-1 win over Westlake in the CIF-SS Division 2 quarterfinals on Friday.

After giving up an early breakaway goal, No. 2 seed Los Osos, ranked the No.1 team in the country by MaxPreps.com, trailed until Ifeoma Onumonu's penalty kick tied the game in the 58th minute. Both teams had quality scoring chances down the stretch, but it wasn't until Camacho's heroics that Los Osos advanced to a semifinal meeting with Baseline League rival Upland after never having made it past the quarterfinals in school history.

Colony High School's Samaje Grant and Dontel James were issued scholarship offers from Arizona last weekend, less than three weeks after teammate Bryan Harper signed with the Wildcats. Grant was offered as a kick returner and slot receiver while James is being recruited as both a running back and linebacker, according to Colony head football coach Matt Bechtel. Grant is expected to receive an offer from UCLA at the Bruins' junior day on Sunday and Washington State is also close to offering.

James finished the year with 333 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Grant had 32 receptions for 381 yards and two touchdowns catching passes from Harper, who was recruited as an athlete but may play quarterback in Rich Rodriguez's spread-option offense at Arizona.

Joe Mathis is taking it as slow as he can, but that task gets more difficult by the day. The Upland High School four-star junior defensive end has received 11 scholarship offers in the last two weeks alone.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound Mathis figured he'd be a target on the West Coast, but what surprised him was when his status went national. It was Oklahoma and Oklahoma State offering last week, Michigan and Michigan State this week. Nebraska offered the same day as Oklahoma, joining names on his list more familiar to Mathis like USC, UCLA, Washington and Arizona State.

"I really didn't see that coming, all the national offers," Mathis said. "But I'm open to anybody. I'll go anywhere as long as I fit in."

Mathis has solidified three of his eventual official recruiting trips, none of which are on the West Coast. He'll visit Michigan, Oklahoma and Nebraska with two trips yet to be determined.

When the CIF-SS spring preseason polls were released this week, the Chino Hills High School softball team was ranked No. 3 in Division 3. Preseason rankings are seemingly based primarily on a team's appearance on paper, but if that were the case it would be hard to rank anybody ahead of the Huskies.

Seven of the nine Chino Hills players who take the field on opening day will be signed with or committed to Division I colleges - with the potential to add at least two more, according to coach Mike Southworth. A season after the Huskies were two wins from a CIF championship, the outlook isn't too shabby.

To add some perspective, freshman infielder Tannon Snow, who has verbally committed to Arizona State prior to her first high school season, is forced into the outfield due to an infield already filled with college-bound players. The same can be said for left fielder Patricia Parks, a sophomore committed to Arizona who will pitch when the circle is vacated by incumbent starter Nikki Innamorato (Cal Poly San Luis Obispo).

The top-seeded Los Osos High School girls water polo team set up a rematch of last year's CIF final courtesy of a 15-11 semifinal victory on Wednesday over Fullerton Troy. The Baseline League champions raced to a 14-4 lead before allowing the last seven goals of the game.

It won't be an all-Baseline League final in Division 4 after unseeded Upland succumbed in overtime to No. 2 seed North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake, which will attempt to defend its championship against Los Osos on Saturday at Irvine High School.

Despite a 4-0 lead in its semifinal, St. Lucy's couldn't earn a return trip to the Division 3 final. The No. 2 seed lost a nail-biter to third-seeded Arroyo Grande, 7-6.

Azusa Pacific is hosting a junior day Saturday for prospective football players, its first since making the jump from NAIA to Division II. As the only Division II program in the Los Angeles area, Azusa Pacific is hoping the move from NAIA will boost recruiting, beginning with a large turnout of high school juniors on Saturday.

Check-in for juniors and guests is at 5:30 p.m. in front of the Hall of Champions. Players can RSVP for junior day by calling the Azusa Pacific football office at (626) 815-3211. Azusa Pacific finished last season ranked 15th in NAIA with a 6-4 record. The program has made seven playoff appearances since 1998 and won one NAIA championship.

Lou Randall was hired on Tuesday as the new head football coach at Don Lugo, according to Don Lugo athletic director Joe Marcos. Randall won three CIF championships during a tenure at Riverside North, his last stop as a head coach, that ended in 2007. He was an assistant coach at Chino Hills last season.

Randall was interviewed Friday along with six other candidates from the Chino Valley Unified School district. He was officially notified of his selection on Tuesday.

"With Lou, it was his experience that stood out," Marcos said. "He has won in several places. He has a great resume. I've known about him for a long time. There were a lot of good candidates even though it was all in house, so it wasn't an easy decision."

Seven Inland Valley boys basketball teams were eliminated from the playoffs in Tuesday's second round/quarterfinals, several of which were unexpected. Division 3AAA top seed Damien went down inthe quarters, as did all three Sierra League representatives. Sixth-seeded Summit, Don Lugo and Ayala each lost nail-biters while two-time defending state champion La Verne Lutheran won a tight one. Three teams remain in Division 1AA as Etiwanda, Eisenhower and Upland moved on, but no more than one team is still alive in any other single division.

Leonard Hudson has been fired after three seasons as Garey High School's head football coach, the last of which was an 0-9 campaign during which the average margin of defeat was more than 30 points. The subpar 2011 season came one year after Hudson led the Vikings to the playoffs for the first time in 10 years courtesy of a 5-6 overall mark and a fourth-place finish in the Mt. Baldy League.

Hudson made public comments during the 2011 season that he wasn't pleased with the level of support for the football team from the administration, but he was judicious in his departure.

"They said they had their direction and I had my direction and they wanted to go in their direction more," Hudson said. "It was totally unexpected and I don't know where this came from. But there were some personal issues between me and the administration."

Four girls water polo teams entered Saturday's quarterfinals and four emerged victorious. St. Lucy's, the No. 2 seed in Division 3, cruised past Rio Mesa by a score of 15-8 to move one step closer to a return trip to the CIF final. Waiting for the Regents' in Wednesday's 1:45 p.m. semifinal at Heritage Park in Irvine is third-seeded Arroyo Grande, an 11-8 winner over Vista Murrieta on Saturday.

Both of the Baseline League teams advanced in Division 4 as top-seeded Los Osos ran away from Buena Park in a 14-4 win and Upland grinded out a 5-3 victory over Dana Hills. Upland will need to get past second-seeded Harvard-Westlake at 1:45 on Wednesday to set up a potential all-Baseline League final. In the other semifinal Los Osos will face No. 4 seed Troy at 3 p.m. on Wednesday at Heritage Park in Irvine.

Division 5 No. 1 seed Bonita, who defeated Los Osos, St. Lucy's and Upland during the regualr season, looked the part of a top seed in a comfortable 13-5 victory over Pasadena. At 7:30 Wednesday night at Mt. SAC, the Bearcats will take on fourth-seeded Redlands East Valley, a 10-5 winner over Burbank Burroughs in the quarterfinals.

Chili's in Chino Hills is participating in a fund raiser on Thursday for Ayala High School graduate Kylie Doniak, a University of Texas senior soccer player who is in critical condition after an auto-pedestrian accident in Austin, Texas on Feb. 3. Anybody who notifies their server they are there for Doniak will have 15 percent of their bill donated to her fund. Chili's is located at 3670 Grand Avenue in Chino Hills.

According to the family's website, Doniak had successful surgery today on her broken tibia and clavicle. Perhaps the best news is that the pressure in her brain stabilized enough for her to be a candidate for surgery.

Ayala High School graduate and University of Texas soccer player Kylie Doniak is showing signs of improvement after being critically injured in a hit-and-run by a suspected drunk driver in downtown Austin early the morning of Feb. 3. Among her injuries are a broken leg, broken ribs and a broken collar bone but it is swelling in her brain that is the largest concern, according to a website maintained by the Doniak family. The 22-year-old has opened her eyes and moved her fingers, multiple outlets are reporting.

For updates on Doniak's condition from her family or to donate to a fund that has been created for her, click here. Doniak was the leading scorer on the Texas soccer team in 2009 and 2010 before playing her final season this year. Her older sister Alyssa played soccer at UC Santa Barbara. Her younger sister Makenzy, a senior at Ayala, is the reigning Inland Valley Player of the Year and will play at Virginia next season.

Nicholas Colunga, 22, was arrested on one count of intoxication assault and two counts of failure to stop and render aid. He was chased down by Sisto Perez, 47, who followed on a motorcycle until Colunga crashed, exited his vehicle and was tied up with a belt until police arrived.

Seven candidates have been selected from within the Chino Valley Unified School District to be interviewed Feb. 17 for the vacant Don Lugo head football coaching job, according to Don Lugo athletic director Joe Marcos. Rick Martin retired Jan. 26 after four years at the helm. Don Lugo is not required to choose one of the seven candidates.

"After the interviews, we'll see," Marcos said. "We opened (the job) up to the district and if we're not satisfied after the interviews, we'll open it up to the outside."

No team in the Mt. Baldy League can claim to have been there before. Well, at least not in the last seven years.

The Colony High School boys basketball team didn't secure its seventh consecutive league championship until the regular season finale Thursday night but the Titans played like they had been there before, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 69-55 victory over Montclair.

Junior Kennieth Barnes led the Titans (19-8, 11-1) with 19 points and 15 rebounds, but it was the seniors who took over down the stretch. Senior guard Miles Poullard scored five of his 12 points during a 17-3 fourth-quarter run, including a 3-pointer to give Colony a 62-53 lead with 2:43 to play. Senior small forward Marcus Magett scored four of his seven points during the decisive run that began with Colony trailing by two nearly two minutes into the final quarter.

La Verne Lutheran High School's Grant Jerrett was the only player from California to be selected to play in the McDonalds All-American game. The 6-foot-10, 230-pound center who has signed with Arizona is one of 12 members of the West team that will take on the East on March 28 at the United Center in Chicago.

Four players from Southern California were selected for the girls McDonalds All-American team, including Candice Agee of Silverado High School, who will play at Penn State. Jordan Adams and Nirra Fields of Santa Ana Mater Dei High and Imani Stafford of Los Angeles Windward are the other three.

Game of the week
Claremont at West Covina South Hills, Thursday, 5:30 p.m.
The Wolfpack attempts to complete an undefeated run through league.

Upland High School junior defensive end Joe Mathis received scholarship offers from Oregon State and Washington State on Wednesday, according to Upland assistant coach Mike Esquivel. Also on Wednesday, rivals.com released its top 100 recruits for the class of 2013 and the 6-foot-4, 250-pound Mathis was the only player from the Inland Valley to make the list.

Mathis has seven scholarship offers, according to rivals.com: Colorado, Indiana, Oregon State, San Diego State, UCLA, Washington and Washington State. Mathis committed to Washington on Oct. 25, but de-committed in early January.

Most of the winter sports' league races have been decided, but there are a few with unfinished business heading into the final two days of the regular season.

After the Claremont girls soccer team's 2-0 victory over Ayala on Tuesday broke a tie for first place between the two, the Wolfpack needs to defeat West Covina South Hills tonight to secure an outright Sierra League championship.

The Ontario Christian boys basketball team will face Aquinas in a de facto Ambassador League championship game tonight in San Bernardino a year after the Knights broke a first-place tie with Aquinas with a win in the penultimate game of last year's regular season.

The Hacienda League girls soccer race took a turn on Tuesday when Diamond Bar's win over Bonita pulled the Brahmas into a first-place tie. Bonita needs a win over a struggling Rowland team to earn its share of the league title while Diamond Bar's road to at least a share of the league championship requires it to defeat a Los Altos team that won their first meeting, 3-2, on Jan. 23.

Through it's 360 days away, the Rancho Cucamonga High School football team is getting an early jump on next National Signing Day. Junior defensive backs Chris Hawkins and Tahaan Goodman have already compiled 16 scholarship offers between them.

Hawkins, an all-CIF cornerback last season, has offers from Nebraska, Stanford, UCLA, Boise State, Cal, San Diego State, Northwestern, Washington and Washington State. Goodman, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound safety, has offers from Nebraska, Boise State, South Florida, UCLA, Cal, San Diego State and Washington State.

Hawkins, a 6-0, 170-pound cornerback, had two interceptions and 32 tackles while Goodman had 45 tackles for a defense that allowed 16.3 points per game, the lowest in a Baseline League that advanced two teams to the CIF-SS Inland Division semifinals.

Jeremy Hemsley and Isaiah McCullough are technically in their first year of high school, but it's about that time of the basketball season when they're no longer considered freshman.

With Damien High School center Chris Reyes commanding much of the attention, the youthful duo controlled significant portions of the Spartans' 48-38 win over Chino Hills Friday night. Hemsley scored a game-high 11 points and McCullough chipped in seven points while helping the 6-foot-7 Reyes control the paint for the top-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 3AAA.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Damien (22-2, 8-0) assured itself at least a share of the Sierra League championship while ending the title hopes of Chino Hills (15-9, 5-3), the No. 5 team in Division 1A.

After a one-year hiatus, the Stevens family is back in charge of the football team at Ontario Christian High School. Chris Stevens, the Knights' head coach from 2005 to 2008, was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach on Thursday following last week's departure of Scott Hurst, who led Ontario Christian to an Ambassador League championship in his lone season in charge.

Hurst took over for Chris' father Laing Stevens, who coached the Knights for two seasons following the end of his son's tenure in 2008 due to the birth of Chris' triplets. Hurst's departure was a mutual decision, according to Ontario Christian athletic director David Parkes, in part due to the great distance Hurst had to travel from his home to Ontario Christian. Stevens, who was the Knights' offensive coordinator the last two seasons, wasn't expecting the move but is happy to be back as the head coach.

Upland High School four-star receiver Kenny Lawler chose Cal, albeit with a slight hesitation, when the senior announced his collegiate intentions live on Fox Sports West on national signing day. Upland teammate Christian Powell, rated the No. 3 fullback in the nation by scout.com, switched his commitment from UCLA to Colorado on Monday night and signed with the Buffaloes this morning. Upland offensive lineman Kenyatta Johnson picked up a late offer from Texas Southern and signed with the FCS school on Wednesday.

Lawler, who narrowed a list of 17 scholarship offers to finalists Cal, Oregon State and Washington State, was committed to Arizona State prior to the Sun Devils coaching change after the season. It has been a rollercoaster ride ever since.

"Some days I felt like I was with one school then I'd get a call from another coach and they can tell you some stuff that really gets in your head," Lawler said. "This whole process is crazy. It can be stressful, it can make you happy, it's just kind of all over the place."

Yesterday neither Bryan Harper nor Robert Wagner were even sure they were going to sign national letters of intent today. But both of the Colony High School football prospects' recruiting roller coasters came to rest on national signing day as Harper, a three-star athlete, signed with Arizona and Wagner, a three-star linebacker, signed with New Mexico State, according to Colony athletic director Jaime Sandoval.

Harper, who was committed to Washington prior to the December departure of defensive backs coach Demetrice Martin, among others, chose Arizona over offers from Oregon and UCLA, where Martin was hired. Arizona offered Harper prior to the firing of Mike Stoops and the new coaching staff was the final school to enter the sweepstakes. Primarily recruited as a cornerback, Arizona is entertaining the idea of Harper playing quarterback as he did part-time at Colony.

Wagner lost both of his Pac-12 offers due to coaching changes at Arizona State and Arizona, his top choice. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound linebacker, who had eight offers prior to the coaching changes, was offered by New Mexico State on Tuesday but as of this morning wasn't sure he would sign with anyone. Wagner's running mate, linebacker Eddie Martinez, will be close by after signing with Division II Western New Mexico.

Through the eyes of a teenager, football typically is viewed as the destination, not the vehicle. Football sometimes begets a free college education courtesy of the small number of lucrative scholarships, but in the case of the four captains of the Diamond Ranch High School football team, it's quite the opposite.

Whether it's congressmen or Ivy League school officials in the meeting room, game film never is a request, but football might be the most appealing extracurricular activity available. Jacob Ardron believes he likely wouldn't have been admitted to Columbia without the football prowess that made him an all-CIF middle linebacker. Andrew Fischer, a track-star receiver, was on the radar of Pacific-12 Conference schools but physics programs don't get much better than those he'll be in at Harvard next year. Blake Benjamin and Peter Neise will head off to Navy and Army, respectively, next year after completing rigorous application processes that required more time than they devoted to football.

Each of the four Diamond Ranch captains will sign with their respective schools Wednesday, national signing day, but their all-expenses paid educations are what they are most happy to be cementing. Each of the seniors maintain grade-point averages greater than 4.5 on a four-point scale, literally off the charts for your average high school student but fairly pedestrian in the Ivy League.
