The 19th annual Inland Valley High School All-Star baseball game presented by the Daily Bulletin is scheduled for June 15 at the Epicenter. Seats are $5 and the first pitch will be at 6:30 p.m. after the gates open at 5:30. The game featuring the top seniors from the area will pit North against South with Interstate 10 providing the barrier between the two teams.
"I would like to thank both the City of Rancho Cucamonga and our administrative staff at the Daily Bulletin for making the game possible," game director and Daily Bulletin sports editor Louis Brewster said. "With resources being trimmed on both sides and the tough economic period, we are also grateful to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes for their continued support of one of the best-attended games of its kind in Southern California."

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Jackie Macy, Setter, St. Lucy's, Senior
The St. Lucy's setter finished her high school career by leading the Regents to a second consecutive CIF championship. Macy, who will play at Colgate next season, collected 1,103 assists on the season, led the Sierra League champions with 59 aces and had 251 digs. A rock for St. Lucy's for the second year in a row, Macy was instrumental in a second consecutive Sierra League title and another dramatic playoff run.
COACH OF THE YEAR
Sean Douglas, St. Lucy's
Douglas coached the Regents to a CIF championship just as he did last year and while the result was the same, everything else was different. Gone was his top hitter and middle blocker from last season, but Douglas utilized a junior and sophomore in prominant roles this season. St. Lucy's felt the weight of defending its title as evidenced by twice being swept in league play, but Douglas helped the Regents regroup in time to win an outright Sierra League championship before surging to the CIF title.

There were plenty of debatable names left on and off the All-CIF football teams released this week. Here are three players who didn't make the cut in the Central Division who left the debate behind about four months ago.
- Don Lugo defensive lineman George Uko, who scout.com rates the No. 2 player at his position in the country somehow didn't make the All-CIF team in his own division. The best defensive lineman in Southern California, who played for a playoff team, wasn't deemed a top 8 defensive lineman in the Central Division. USC's probably going to take the 6-foot-4, 300-pound senior, who was the most highly recruited player in the Inland Valley, anyway.
- Chaffey running back Ronald Douglas had the third-most rushing yards in California when his season ended on Nov. 27 but somehow missed the cut for All-CIF in the Central Division. Douglas rolled up 2,671 yards and 24 TDs on 343 carries, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. His Chaffey team nearly defeated eventual Central Division runner-up Los Osos in a 28-26 quarterfinal playoff game. Chaffey coach Chris Brown wasn't pleased with the snub of the player that would have set Chaffey's all-time rushing record had he not been on the bench for a few second halves. "I know I'm venting a little bit but what they did is just flat out wrong," Brown said. "If you look at this team it just doesn't make sense."
- Garey's 6-foot-3 junior receiver Dominique Williams had 45 receptions for 1,213 yards and 10 TDs for a Garey team that passed for just 1,800 yards 17 TDs - and Williams threw one of those TDs! - but was a less attractive option than a receiver in his own league with 600 less yards, five less catches and four less TDs? As for the argument that Williams' Garey team wasn't relevant, the Vikings were one win away from the school's first playoff appearance since 2000.

A team of San Bernardino County all-stars, many of whose names you'll recognize, will try to avenge two straight defeats at the hands of the Riverside County all-stars Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Corona High School.
I'll be there and will provide some thoughts on the players, many of whom are making one last push for a scholarship before national signing day on Feb. 3. Click the link below and take a look at the rosters for both teams.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR:
Anthony Brown, Senior running back/defensive back, Kaiser High School
The USC-bound Brown missed two games this season but still compiled 1,681 yards and 18 touchdowns on 198 carries in leading the Cats to their ninth consecutive Sunkist League championship and the semifinals of the CIF-SS Eastern Division. Brown, who is talented enough on both sides of the ball that USC hasn't yet determined what position he'll play in college, had 55 tackles and an interception as a cornerback.
COACH OF THE YEAR:
Tim Salter, Upland High School
A season after graduating four players with a collective total of circa 50 scholarship offers, Salter led Upland to its first CIF championship since 2000. With members of an offense that averaged more than 35 points per game gone to Stanford, Northwestern and Arizona State, Salter rode a defense that held opponents under 11 points per game to his third CIF championship at Upland.
San Dimas' Bill Zernickow finished a close second after guiding the Saints to their first ever CIF championship this season. After taking Diamond Ranch from its second consecutive 1-6 start to a second consecutive CIF championship game appearance, Roddy Layton was under consideration along with Los Osos' Tom Martinez, who led the Grizzlies to the school's first-ever CIF championship game after losing 38 seniors.

Upland head coach Tim Salter celebrates the Highlanders' 19-7 win over Los Osos in the CIF-SS Central Division championship game on Dec. 11.
Juston Winrow, who fittingly sealed San Dimas' first ever football CIF championship on Saturday by leveling Monrovia QB Nick Bueno in the end zone for a safety, was named the Valle Vista League's lineman of the year.
The 6-foot, 205-pound outside linebacker had 70 tackles and 18.5 sacks, including, of course, the one that punctuated San Dimas' rain-soaked 12-7 win over top-seeded Monrovia in the CIF-SS Mid-Valley Division final. As a tight end, Winrow was the Valle VIsta League champions' leading receiver with 20 receptions for 531 yards and four touchdowns.
Perhaps due in part to the evenly distributed carries in San Dimas' Wing-T offense, Baldwin Park senior Christian Lazaro was named the back of the year.

Chino Hills all-everything junior Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was named the Sierra League's athlete of the year when the all-Sierra League team was released this week. He was the Sierra League tri-champions' leading receiver with 40 receptions for 694 yards and seven touchdowns. He was the second-leading rusher with 498 yards and 12 touchdowns and may have done his best work at safety, where he intercepted three passes despite teams throwing away from him following his school-record eight interceptions as a sophomore.
Phillip Sainz (above), running back for Sierra League tri-champion Damien, was a co-league offensive MVP after rushing for 1,252 yards and 12 touchdowns. Glendora quarterback Chad Jeffries was a co-offensive MVP while teammate Michael Gonzales was the league's defensive MVP. Chino Hills' Wes Feer was named the league's place kicking specialist and Damien's Jake Capraro was the punting specialist.
Not surprisingly, repeat CIF-SS Southeast Division champion Charter Oak dominated the awards. Wide Receiver/defensive back A.J. Powell was named the Miramonte League's player of the year with numbers (26 receptions, 390 yards, 58 tackles, 4 interceptions) that must not have told the whole story. Teammate Adam Muema (1,938 yards, 23 TDs) claimed offensive MVP for his exploits at running back and linebacker Keith Smith (132 tackles) defensive MVP.
In all, Charter Oak, which didn't allow a sinlge point to Miramonte League team this season, including its second meeting with Diamond Ranch, a 21-0 win in the CIF championship game on Friday, landed a league-high 12 people on the All-Miramonte League first team followed by Diamond Ranch's 10.
In addition to Baseline League defensive MVP Tony Washington, Los Osos landed a league-high 10 players on the first team. Upland, which tied with Rancho Cucamonga with seven first-team members, matched Los Osos with five on the defensive first team.
After throwing for 2,459 yards with 18 TDs and 10 interceptions in addition to rushing for 916 yards and 17 TDs, Etiwanda quarterback Angel Santiago was named the league's offensive MVP. Etiwanda landed five on the first team, including Santiago's favorite target, reciever Bobby Ratliff.

Webb senior Chris Sazo was named Division 6 player of the year on Monday and Tom MacKinlay, coach of Webb's 2008 CIF championship team, earned coach of the year honors. Two of Sazo's teammates - Chandler Talleur and Matt Abrams - were named first team all-CIF.
CIF-SS Division 5 finalist Los Osos landed three players on the first team: Sean Evans, Tyler Abbott and Dominic Vicino. On the Division 3 first team are Damien's David Purington and Eric Osterberg following the Spartans run to the semifinals.
It's no surprise that the Colony High School football team dominated the awards, producing both the offensive and defensive MVPs and landing a league-high 10 players in on the first team.
Offensive MVP: Jamil Austin, Colony, 12, RB
Austin racked up 1,826 rushing yards on just 170 carries (that's 10.7 yards per carry) and scored 22 TDs in leading Colony to a 10-2 record and an undefeated run through the Mt. Baldy league for the school's third league title in four years.
Defensive MVP: Edward Todd, Colony, 12, MLB
With a team-leading 94 tackles and four sacks, Todd was the leader of a stingy Colony defense that allowed just 13.4 points per game.
Kaiser High School linebacker Josh Shirley accepted a nomination on Monday to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, the premier high school all-star football game in the nation.
The 6-foot-3, 218-pound Shirley, rated the eighth-best outside linebacker in the country by rivals.com, is one of 90 players from across the country who will participate on Jan. 9 in San Antonio, Texas. In a few short months, Shirley will be playing in front of 35,000 at the Alamo Dome.
"It's all pretty overwhelming," Shirley said. "I just feel blessed to have been blessed with the ability to compete on this level. The talent there is going to be through the roof."
Shirley will make an announcement of his own at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, proclaiming at some point during NBC's national broadcast where he will play college football. The four-star recruit has narrowed the field to: USC, UCLA, Notre Dame, Miami, Cal, Tennessee, Washington and Arizona.
Inland Empire football should not only be proud it showed out in a 35-27 win over counterparts from L.A. County in the Southern California Fiesta Bowl on Saturday, it should be proud of the conversations going on around in L.A. County before the two All-Star teams set foot on the field.
L.A. Roosevelt High School football coach Javier Cid, coach of the L.A. County team, called the I.E. a "hotbed of football." He spoke of how his team just didn't have the selection of athletes available in the I.E. He labeled his team underdogs before it even took the field.
The I.E. proved him right. It clearly outclassed L.A. County across the board. Had Palmdale QB Brandon Mims, who will play at Iowa State next season, not been a member of the L.A. County team, the scored would have been much more lopsided. Granted there were only a handful of Division-I college players among the 129 graduated high school seniors (so, take this representation for what its worth - on both sides) but within this sample, the I.E. had the better crop.
Here are some stats from the game:
Total yards: I.E. 301 (rushing 247, passing 54), L.A. 264 (rushing 107, passing 157)
RUSHING
I.E. - A.J. Johnson (Chino Hills) 15-105, Jonathan Norton (Moreno Valley) 8-62 2TD, Lyle Negron (Vista Murrieta) 7-54 TD.
L.A. - Brandon Mims (Palmdale) 9-89
PASSING
I.E. - Negron 3-for-3 14 yards TD, Eric Johnson (Bloomington) 3-for-4 40 yards.
L.A. - Mims 5-for-8 83 yards TD, INT.
RECEIVING
I.E. - Alex Jefferies (Eisenhower) 4-48 TD.
L.A. - Dayvon Ross (Manual Arts) 3-77 TD.
Sorry for the delay...
Offensive MVP - Ronald Douglas, RB, Jr., Chaffey
Offensive MVP - Herman Huezo, QB, Sr., Ontario
Defensive MVP - Deveion Bauman, S, Sr., Chaffey
Football season isn't over yet for a couple of area quarterbacks.
Los Osos High School's Richard Brehaut and Upland's Josh Nunes will play in the Under Armour All-America Game Sunday night in Orlando, Fla. The all-star game featuring some of the top high school juniors and seniors in the country will air on ESPN at 5 p.m.
Here is a link to the player profiles.
The Baseline League cleaned house at the All-CIF football meeting Wednesday, claiming 19 of the 40 first-team selections.
To nobody's surpirse, Rancho Cucamonga's nine were the most from any single team. The Central Division champion Cougars also produced both the offensive and defensive MVPs.
Offensive MVP: Greg Watson, Jr., QB
Defensive MVP: Daniel Fonua, Sr., LB
Offensive MVP - Greg Watson, QB, Jr., Rancho Cucamonga
Defensive co-MVP - Ibeakalem Nduka, DE, Sr., Etiwanda
Defensive co-MVP - Jesse Gonzales, LB, Sr., Los Osos
Defensive co-MVP - Daniel Fonua, LB, Sr., Rancho Cucamonga

Offensive MVP - A.J. Johnson, RB, Chino Hills (above)
Defensive Co-MVP - Lawrence Larivee, LB, Sr., Ayala
Defensive Co-MVP - Chad Young, LB, Sr., Glendora
Athlete of the Year - David Quiroga, WR/DB, Sr., Ayala
I followed Baseline League boys basketball more closely than any other league in any other winter sport, thus, I feel knowledgeable enough to comment on the selections. Take a look:
BOYS BASKETBALL
MVP
Erick Ellis Etiwanda 12 G
1st Team
J.J. O'Brien Alta Loma 10 G
Chris Confair Claremont 12 G
Rome Draper Etiwanda 11 G
Kendall Williams Los Osos 10 G
Nick Bennett Rancho 12 G
Rashad Bowie Rancho 12 G
Kevin Bradshaw Upland 12 F
Danny Redmon Upland 12 G
Player of the year: A.J. Springer, Miller QB
Over 2,200 passing yards, over 1,700 rushing yards, 45 combined touchdowns, a completion percentage of 71. His team went 10-2, would have made the semifinals if the D hadn't given up a devastating last-minute touchdown drive. This was an easy choice.
Coach of the year: Tom Inglima, Ayala
0-10 in 2006 to 7-4 in 2007. From last place to second place in the Sierra League and a playoff berth in his second year at Ayala. This one was easier.
Best game of the year: Chaffey 30, La Quinta 28 (Week 4)
Keep in mind, this was the best game that I personally witnessed, not necessarily the best game of the year. Deveion Bauman (4 TD's - two receiving, one kickoff return, one interception return) dueled with La Quinta RB Kamani Harper (223 yards, 3 TD's), eventually catching the winning touchdown over Harper as time expired. Doesn't get a whole lot better than this.
Play of the year: Diamond Ranch QB Joe Carrillo's 83-yard touchdown pass to Brandon Sermons with 26 seconds left to give the Panthers a 28-24 win over Los Altos. Sermons, a 6-foot-4 speedy cornerback rarely plays offense. He was only needed for one play in this game, the only play of Diamond Ranch's final possession. He ran a go route down the right sideline, made a leaping catch over double coverage and ran the final 40 yards into the end zone.
Most clutch performance: Colony QB Jeff Ginolfi's 16-for-21, 326-yard, 5 TD performance in the CIF-SS Central Division championship game, a 41-14 Colony win. This was extra sweet for the senior considering he was the second option on a team that ran the ball 66 precent of the time.
