Ayala High School graduate and University of Texas soccer player Kylie Doniak is showing signs of improvement after being critically injured in a hit-and-run by a suspected drunk driver in downtown Austin early the morning of Feb. 3. Among her injuries are a broken leg, broken ribs and a broken collar bone but it is swelling in her brain that is the largest concern, according to a website maintained by the Doniak family. The 22-year-old has opened her eyes and moved her fingers, multiple outlets are reporting.

For updates on Doniak's condition from her family or to donate to a fund that has been created for her, click here. Doniak was the leading scorer on the Texas soccer team in 2009 and 2010 before playing her final season this year. Her older sister Alyssa played soccer at UC Santa Barbara. Her younger sister Makenzy, a senior at Ayala, is the reigning Inland Valley Player of the Year and will play at Virginia next season.

Nicholas Colunga, 22, was arrested on one count of intoxication assault and two counts of failure to stop and render aid. He was chased down by Sisto Perez, 47, who followed on a motorcycle until Colunga crashed, exited his vehicle and was tied up with a belt until police arrived.

No team in the Mt. Baldy League can claim to have been there before. Well, at least not in the last seven years.

The Colony High School boys basketball team didn't secure its seventh consecutive league championship until the regular season finale Thursday night but the Titans played like they had been there before, pulling away in the fourth quarter for a 69-55 victory over Montclair.

Junior Kennieth Barnes led the Titans (19-8, 11-1) with 19 points and 15 rebounds, but it was the seniors who took over down the stretch. Senior guard Miles Poullard scored five of his 12 points during a 17-3 fourth-quarter run, including a 3-pointer to give Colony a 62-53 lead with 2:43 to play. Senior small forward Marcus Magett scored four of his seven points during the decisive run that began with Colony trailing by two nearly two minutes into the final quarter.

Perhaps it was an appropriate way for the Titans to claim the league crown, seeing as this was the only of those seven seasons during which Colony spent time in second place. The Titans have lost just two league games in seven years, one of which was a two-point loss at Don Lugo Jan. 6.

"I think this one is sweeter because this is the first time we've had to chase it," Colony head coach Jerry De Fabiis said. "I knew it was going to be a close game but it was our senior leadership down the stretch. That's what it takes to make a playoff run and that's what it takes to win a league title."

Montclair's Devyn Sampson scored 20 of his 26 points in the first half and his put-back with 6:30 to play put the Cavaliers (21-3, 9-3) ahead, 51-49.

Colony's Everett Turner, who had 14 points and eight rebounds, began the 17-3 run the next trip down the court. Montclair employed a triangle-and-two defense in an attempt to shut off Turner and Poullard, frustrating Poullard into two first-quarter fouls. Both players, however, played a large role in the fourth quarter.

"To be honest their defense was working early on," Poullard said. "But you could see their legs go out from under them. No team in Southern California can run with us for 48 minutes."

Second-place Don Lugo split the season series with Colony but a forfeit to Montclair, due to ineligible players participating in a Jan. 9 game, cost the Conquistadores a share of the league championship. Montclair began the season with 12 consecutive wins and was in first place in league before Colony handed it a 31-point loss in their first meeting.

Most of the winter sports' league races have been decided, but there are a few with unfinished business heading into the final two days of the regular season.

After the Claremont girls soccer team's 2-0 victory over Ayala on Tuesday broke a tie for first place between the two, the Wolfpack needs to defeat West Covina South Hills tonight to secure an outright Sierra League championship.

The Ontario Christian boys basketball team will face Aquinas in a de facto Ambassador League championship game tonight in San Bernardino a year after the Knights broke a first-place tie with Aquinas with a win in the penultimate game of last year's regular season.

The Hacienda League girls soccer race took a turn on Tuesday when Diamond Bar's win over Bonita pulled the Brahmas into a first-place tie. Bonita needs a win over a struggling Rowland team to earn its share of the league title while Diamond Bar's road to at least a share of the league championship requires it to defeat a Los Altos team that won their first meeting, 3-2, on Jan. 23.

Jeremy Hemsley and Isaiah McCullough are technically in their first year of high school, but it's about that time of the basketball season when they're no longer considered freshman.

With Damien High School center Chris Reyes commanding much of the attention, the youthful duo controlled significant portions of the Spartans' 48-38 win over Chino Hills Friday night. Hemsley scored a game-high 11 points and McCullough chipped in seven points while helping the 6-foot-7 Reyes control the paint for the top-ranked team in CIF-SS Division 3AAA.

With two games remaining in the regular season, Damien (22-2, 8-0) assured itself at least a share of the Sierra League championship while ending the title hopes of Chino Hills (15-9, 5-3), the No. 5 team in Division 1A.

The Huskies, who gave up 24 points to the St. Mary's-bound Reyes in a 63-55 loss Jan. 20, regularly sent double-teams at him in limiting his production to 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. The 6-1 Hemsley in particular took advantage of the attention commanded by his talented teammate.

"If (Reyes) is single-covered, he's going to score at an incredible rate," Chino Hills coach Steve Baik said. "There's always going to be a mismatch somewhere on the court when you're dealing with a player like Reyes. But I don't want to take anything away from Hemsley because he's a great player off the dribble."

Chino Hills took its only lead of the game early in the second quarter, but Hemsley led the resurgence by driving the lane to score Damien's next eight points. A put-back with two seconds remaining in the first half by Jon Prater, who had seven points, gave the Spartans a 25-21 lead.

It was McCullough's turn in the third quarter when the freshman led the decisive 13-4 run with five points, including a reverse lay-up to begin the charge and a put-back that gave Damien a 40-30 lead with 5:19 left in the game.

"They're both good players but I think what I'm most proud of is that the freshmen continue to get better and now they're more comfortable now with what we're doing," Damien coach Matt Dunn said. "I think they had the best matchups tonight for us."

Michael Navar, who was assigned the duty of defending Reyes, led Chino Hills with 10 points. His pair of free throws to begin the second-half scoring pulled the Huskies within two but that's as close as they would get. Damien held Chino Hills to six points in the third quarter, including just one field goal on a pretty spin move to the basket by Deion Page for two of his eight points.

Chino Hills has now lost three of its last four games, including two league losses to the two teams ahead of it in the standings. In order to fall into a tie for the league title with second-place Ayala, Damien would have to drop its Tuesday game to last-place West Covina Charter Oak the regular season finale to Ayala.

After a one-year hiatus, the Stevens family is back in charge of the football team at Ontario Christian High School. Chris Stevens, the Knights' head coach from 2005 to 2008, was promoted from offensive coordinator to head coach on Thursday following last week's departure of Scott Hurst, who led Ontario Christian to an Ambassador League championship in his lone season in charge.

Hurst took over for Chris' father Laing Stevens, who coached the Knights for two seasons following the end of his son's tenure in 2008 due to the birth of Chris' triplets. Hurst's departure was a mutual decision, according to Ontario Christian athletic director David Parkes, in part due to the great distance Hurst had to travel from his home to Ontario Christian. Stevens, who was the Knights' offensive coordinator the last two seasons, wasn't expecting the move but is happy to be back as the head coach.

"I'm a little shocked because I thought coach Hurst was going to be back," Stevens said. "But it just didn't work out because there were some philosophical differences and some financial issues that the school couldn't meet. To be honest there's been some confusion amongst the staff and the players the last few days.

"But I didn't have to have a long conversation with my wife after they asked me to take the job. I knew I wanted to be a head coach again and I'm just really happy it's at Ontario Christian."

Stevens coached the Knights to their last league championship when the team went 9-3 in 2006. His father took the team to a CIF-SS East Valley championship game appearance in 2009 before stepping down following the 2010 season. Now that his triplets are approaching 3-years-old, Chris Stevens feels confident he can devote the time required to be a head coach.

"His response before I could get the words out of my mouth was 'I'm ready,'" Parkes said. "We're thrilled. We feel good about the direction of the program and we're grateful for coach Hurst and the year he gave us. Chris coming back lessens that blow of him leaving."
