ONTARIO - The irony wasn't lost on anybody.

Colony turned the ball over seven times Thursday night. With Ayala driving for its second touchdown of the last six minutes - and of the game - it was a turnover Colony received that sealed the Titans' 14-9 victory over the Bulldogs.

"This was the ugliest football game you'll ever witness on any level," Bechtel said. "We preach the little things. We preach ball security. And none of that happened."

Colony (2-0) fumbled a grand total of nine times. It lost six of them in addition to a muffed punt that led to Ayala's only points until the game's final seven minutes.

Not that it's much consolation, but Chino Hills did something no team had done to Corona Centennial all season. It lost by only 19 points.

Centennial, the No. 1 seed in the CIF-SS Inland Division, led a game fourth-seeded Chino Hills squad by just five points in the fourth quarter Friday night but pulled away for a 42-23 win to advance to next week's CIF final. The previous smallest margin of victory this season for Centennial (13-0), ranked sixth in the country by Maxpreps.com, was 29 points.

A Centennial team averaging over 55 points per game didn't compile its usual outlandish offensive totals but 6-foot-5 quarterback Michael Eubank threw for 205 yards and a score and rushed for 122 and a touchdown. After a 300-yard day in the second round, running back Barrinton Collins had 64 yards and three touchdowns on 14 carries.

Ayala is 2-0 after taking advantage of six Colony turnovers and running away with a competitive game with 14 fourth-quarter points. Ayala first-year starting QB Caleb Carillo ran for 84 yards and a TD on 13 carries and threw for 90 yards on 8 of 16 passing with a TD and no interceptions. The story of this one was missed opportunities for Colony, which fumbled away its first three possessions, two inside the Ayala 15-yard line. Trailing just 11-0 at the half, Colony gained just 45 yards in the second half and threw two costly fourth-quarter interceptions that led to 14 Ayala points.

Pomona 13, Montclair 0
Demetrius Counts rushed for 206 yards on just 19 carries as Pomona scored its second victory in as many games under head coach Anthony Rice despite three turnovers and several costly penalties. The Pomona defense shut down a winless Montclair team that has scored just 12 points in two games and got a 1-yard touchdown run from QB Tavia Cobbs on a key fourth-and-goal play in the second quarter before Counts scored on a 20-yard run late in the third.

Los Angeles Carson 40, Miller 27
Miller scored 20 consecutive points to take a 27-20 lead entering the fourth quarter against a Carson team that defeated Mater Dei in its season opener, but Carson scored the decisive TD with 5:22 left before taking advantage of a Miller fumble to seal the game. Miller senior QB Eric Shufford ran for 85 yards and threw for 126 yards on 15-of-31 passing but the Rebels gave up 372 yards and four TDs through the air.

After this Thursday night loss knocked them into fourth place in the Sierra League, Ayala's only avenue to the playoffs is the Central Division's one at-large bid, for which it will have stiff competition. The Bulldogs' only hope is for Claremont to knock off Upland in the Baseline League's fourth-place game tonight, giving Ayala and Claremont identical 6-4 records and an equal shot at the bid. If Upland wins, it will have an 8-2 record and easily be the at-large team.

Etiwanda 27, Rancho Cucamonga 24 (OT)
Folloiwing a Rancho Cucamonga field goal on its overtime possession, Etiwanda QB Angel Santiago hit Gary Ayala with a 25-yard touchdown pass on the Eagles first play of OT to earn the Eagles at least a share of the Baseline League title. All Los Osos needs for a co-league championship and the No. 1 seed in the league is a win tonight over winless Alta Loma.

Don Lugo 42, Garey 28
The Conquistadores won the third-place game in the Mt. Baldy League thanks to 291 yards and four touchdowns from running back Steven Bethley. Don Lugo claimed the last playoff spot in the league behind Colony, who clinched the league title with a 39-13 win over Montclair Thursday and second-place Chaffey which beat Ontario, 42-21.

Baseline League play begins tomorrow. Here is my guess at how it will end:

Rancho Cucamonga: 4-1
Upland: 4-1
Etiwanda: 4-1
Los Osos: 2-3
Claremont: 1-4
Alta Loma: 0-5

An outright champion in this league is a rarity. To find an example, one has to look as far back as... well, last season. This begs the question: How in the WORLD did Rancho Cucamonga go unscathed despite the presence of an eventual CIF finalist (Upland), a semifinalist (Los Osos), and a team (Etiwanda) that lost a one-point playoff game to the other semifinalist?!? I mean, the guy quarterbacking Los Osos last season played against Oregon on Saturday!

WIth Sierra League play beginning tomorrow, here's how I think it'll play out:

Chino Hills: 4-1
Glendora: 4-1
Ayala: 3-2
Damien: 3-2
Diamond Bar: 1-4
Chino: 0-5

In all seriousness, quad-champions (if that's even a real term) aren't out of the question this year. Tri-champs were fun enough last season, but a revamped Damien team is added to the mix of contenders in 2009. If a team wins this league outright, I'll be shocked.

Damien is the perfect example of why this league is shrouded in mystery. The Spartans, who won three games last season, are 1-4 but absolutely deserving of league title consideration - for crying out loud, they lost to a defending CIF champ by 3 two weeks ago.

With Miramonte League play beginning Friday, here's how I think it will turn out:

Charter Oak: 3-1
Diamond Ranch: 3-1
Bonita: 3-1
H.H. Los Altos: 1-3
H.H.Wilson: 0-4

Defending CIF and Miramonte League champion Charter Oak not only has all the hardware but its current 5-1 record is a stark contrast to Diamond Ranch and Bonita's 1-5 and 1-4 respective marks. This league's title appears a forgone conclusion, right?

Wrong... Charter Oak is not the juggernaut it was a season ago. Both Diamond Ranch and Bonita played better nonleague schedules. While DR and Bonita were dropping winnable games to Glendora, Chino Hills, Claremont, and San Diego Westview, Charter Oak was eeking out a 3-point victory over an unproven Damien team and putting together a miraculous comeback win over Etiwanda. But the biggest difference was the two gimmies on the defending champ's slate - Bonita and DR didn't have those luxuries.

Here is my guess at how the Valle Vista League will look at the end of league play:

San Dimas: 5-0
Covina: 4-1
Baldwin Park: 3-2
Pomona: 2-3
Covina Northview: 1-4
Ganesha: 0-5

It was a one-point loss to Northview that cost San Dimas the Valle Vista League championship last season. Judging by Northview's nonleague performance, that surely won't happen again.

I think San Dimas (4-1) actually had a better team last season, but the rest of the league hasn been far from impressive thus far. Covina (2-3) played Walnut close but that's about the only thing on its nonleague resume worth mention. Pomona (4-1) and Baldwin Park (4-1) played such soft nonleague schedules that they're difficult to gauge. Although both of their losses came to below average teams.

After considerable progress last season, Ganesha (0-5) has fallen off again. And Northview (1-4), last season's undefeated league champ, has only a victory over hapless Nogales through five games.

With Mt. Baldy League play getting underway on Friday, here is how I think the league standings will look after Nov. 12:

Colony 5-0
Chaffey 4-1
Don Lugo 3-2
Garey 2-3
Montclair 1-4
Ontario 0-5

At its lowest point during the Anthony Rice era, Colony still took Chaffey to overtime last season in a 20-14 loss. Chaffey went on to win the Mt. Baldy League title for the first time since 2005 and Colony dropped to third with a loss to Ontario.

The two years prior, Colony didn't lose a single game in the Mt. Baldy League (or the playoffs, for that matter). After a nonleague showing nothing short of shockingly good, the Titans (4-1) appear to have returned to their CIF title form. Whether or not they are equipped to win a championship in a revamped Central Division is another matter, but Colony appears poised for another run to a league title.

Chaffey is more dynamic this season, allowing QB Jacob Ahmad to throw it a little more, particularly to 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end Christian Sanders. And the Tigers' clock-killing style is always dangerous if they get a lead. But Colony's defense is as big and physical as ever.

Entering league play on a three-game winning streak, Don Lugo is hoping to make some noise in league. The Conquistadores' wins, however, have come at the expense of less than stellar teams, leaving Don Lugo much to prove.

Yes, Norte Vista (5-0) enters league play undefeated while Kaiser (2-3) and Summit (2-3) sport losing records, but I think the Cats will and take home their 9th straight league title. In this smash-mouth league controlled by defense and the running game, USC-bound running back Anthony Brown and a historically stingy defense have Kaiser the best equipped in both.

A couple of Kaiser's losses were easily more impressive than Norte Vista's biggest win, a 28-21 season-opening victory over Riverside La Sierra. Kaiser lost tight games to Colony and Colton, two legit contenders for the CIF-SS Central Division title both better than La Sierra.

Summit is more of a threat to Kaiser than Norte Vista. With a beefed up nonleague schedule, Summit was a last-minute drive and last-second field goal from defeating Etiwanda and Redlands, each of whom outclass La Sierra in my book.

Will REV and Norco meet in the playoffs for the second consecutive season? Here is an educated guess at how the rugged Inland Division might play out...

Here is my humble opinion of how the CIF-SS Central Division will play out.

Keep in mind only the top four teams are seeded by CIF. The seeds I've attached to each team correspond to where each landed in the bracket but would likely be different if not drastically effected by CIF rules. CIF rules like, for example, two teams from the same league can't have a potential second-round matchup. With four Baseline League teams in the 16-team Central Division bracket, CIF is faced with a delicate operation.

Without further ado...

Someone from this league is going to win the CIF title.

The flip side of that coin? A CIF-champion caliber squad will MISS the playoffs. There are esentially five playoff teams in the Baseline League vying for three spots.

Don't take my word for it, voters have five Baseline League teams ranked in the CIF-SS Central Division top 10. That's ONE league occupying half the rankings.

Each year we eagerly await a slip-up from Colony so we can declare the two-time defending CIF-SS Central Division champs' run over.

Three straight losses to begin this season was finally it... or not.

After a co-championship last year, I think this is the year San Dimas will emerge as the clear class of this league... and with the Saints' move to the Mid-Valley Division, maybe as the class of that too.

San Dimas' nonleague schedule isn't particularly revealing. The Saints rolled over inferior opponents with the possible exception of a good Bonita team than only lost by 17. But then, there are plenty of good teams capable of being blown out by San Dimas; it didn't schedule giants, but it handled inferior teams the way it should have.

While this league is more competitive than most, it has a fairly clear top tier to me: Chino Hills (5-0), Ayala (4-1) and defending champ Glendora (3-2).

As for the lower tier... Damien (1-4), a playoff team last year and the champ two years ago, isn't exactly easy to get a handle on. The Spartans' four losses are to teams who have lost ONE game between them. But Damien wasn't competitive in any of those, averaging a 24.7-point margin of defeat.

Chino (2-3) appears headed in the right direction under new coach Greg Setlich, but the Cowboys aren't easy to figure having played one game closer than 31 points.

And Diamond Bar (3-2) has the same nonleague record it did last year before going winless in league. Although this is the Brahmas' second season under coach John Martin, thus progress is very possible.

It's too bad my top two teams in this league will settle their score in seemingly anticlimactic fashion. Charter Oak and Diamond Ranch meet in their Miramonte League openers Friday night in what many perceive as a lopsided matchup.

Diamond Ranch won all of one game on its nonleague schedule while Charter Oak went undefeated. No contest right?

Wrong.

The possibility exists that Canyon Springs could win a CIF championship simply because it rained in Southern California - twice.

The Cougars (8-4) won a 13-0 semifinal game over a more talented Colton team mostly because Colton fumbled on its first possession. Neither team could move the ball playing in the lake that formed over the Moreno Valley High School football field. The game was 7-0 for nearly its entirety.

Colony, however, won its semifinal 29-13 on that same Moreno Valley field a day later. The conditions weren't nearly as bad, but they were far from optimal.

Since most of the rain came Thursday and only a little Friday morning, Colony's field should be in similar condition to the Moreno Valley field the day the Titans (11-2) played their semifinal. Plus Colony just seems to have some magic on its side. The defending champs will repeat in a sloppy, mud-caked game.

Predicted score: Colony 14, Canyon Springs 6

The Daily Bulletin area football teams took a beating in the first round of the playoffs.
There are only five area teams still alive and it ain't gettin' any easier.

Last week: 9-3
Overall: 90-39-1

I'm going undefeated this week. Yeah, I said it. This will be my grand finale (and my last realistic chance to proclaim somthing as absurd as going undefeated before I flop in the playoffs).

Week 9: 16-3
Overall: 74-31-1

Turns out I was a couple weeks early on the proclamation I'd pick at least 80 percent.

Week 8: 12-2
Overall: 58-28-1

If the Southern California firefighters could somehow bottle the cold emanating from my prep football picks last week, it would be a devastating fire retardant.

Week 7: 8-7
Overall: 46-26-1

Making bold predictions is a win-win situation as far as I'm concerned. If I happen to live up to said prediction, well, I'm a genius. On the off chance I don't, I get to make fun of myself (not quite as fun as being a genius, but close).
So, hypothetically, if I declared I would pick 80 percent last week, hypothetically, I could make fun of myself for it.

Week 6: 10-5
Overall: 38-19-1

Time for another bold prediction: I'll pick at least 80 percent this week.
Week 5: 8-4-1
Overall: 28-14-1

Admit it, you thought that I either (a) forgot about the Miramonte League, or (b) thought I'd let the fact that I hardly know anything about three of the five teams stop me from making a prediction. Turns out you were wrong on both accounts. Apology accepted.

To add a little perspective on the Baseline League (and potentially save me some embarrassment), entering the final week of the regular season last year, five of the six teams were still in contention for three playoff spots.
It doesn't get much closer than that, but that won't stop the Baseline from trying to tighten up the race this season.

Interestingly, the week before Mt. Baldy League play got underway last season, Colony lost to an Upland team that didn't even crack the playoff field. Then Colony ripped off nine wins in a row to take not only the Mt. Baldy League title, but the CIF-SS Central Division championship. So, guess what happened Friday? Colony lost to Upland...

It'd be a lot easier to wait five more weeks to do this, but with high school football league play set to begin Friday, I figured I'd take a stab at how the leagues will play out. Beginning with the Sierra League...

I delivered on my promise yet again. Only last week I boldly declared I'd improve on a losing record. Please hold your applause, you're embarrassing me.

Week 4: 8-4
Season record: 20-10

As promised, my winning percentage plummeted last week.
Week 3: 4-5
Season record: 12-6

This week, however, I'm guaranteeing improvement (but not really).

No. 1 Colony (3-0) at Serrano (4-0)
Serrano brings a pretty record to this matchup. Colony, conversely, is coming off an ugly 9-7 win. Serrano's schedule is looking less and less difficult, making its record a little deceiving. Colony, despite not bursting from the gates with blowout's the likes of Serrano's, is the real deal. They'll prove it Friday night, breaking the three-week trend of Daily Bulletin No. 1 teams losing.

I somehow managed to go 8-1 last week, so prepare for my winning percentage to dip precipitously.
