Redlands player earns weekly honor

The University of Redlands men's basketball team made it twice in a row when senior forward Matt Dietrich was named the Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SCIAC) Male Athlete of the Week for his contributions during last week's victories.

Senior center Jordan Sanvictores garnered the award during the week of Jan. 17.

On Saturday, Dietrich led the Bulldogs to their first win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps since 2007 by scoring a season-high 17 points. He was perfect from the charity stripe, going 8-for-8, and nabbed six rebounds. He provided a critical three-pointer late in the first half to help Redlands secure a lead it held through the final whistle.

Dietrich also contributed 12 points and nine rebounds in the team's 64-55 victory over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges last Wednesday.

Freshman swimmer Haley Von Schottenstein of Whittier won the weekly honor for the women.

Redlands (9-10, 6-2 SCIAC) currently sits in a tie for second place in the conference standings. The Bulldogs look forward to hosting Caltech in a SCIAC doubleheader on Saturday, beginning with the women's game at 5 p.m. The men tip off at approximately 7 p.m. in Currier Gym.
