Charity (_______) Tournaments.

I do not play golf.

I'm past the point in my life where I believe I can "pick up" golf and expect to enjoy it (let alone be good at it) for the rest of my life.

I write about golf. That's fun.

I also write about hockey. I notice there are a number of NHL players hosting or participating in charity golf tournaments this summer. It's sort of an annual tradition to raise money for charities of the players' choice. Great idea, no doubt.

But then I got to thinking about the overhead involved in playing golf - greens fees, clubs, and whatnot - and thought, wouldn't it be much more beneficial to the charity (as well as the player's own pocket) to hold a fundraiser surrounding a much CHEAPER sport?

It's not like golf is the only sport rich people play, after all. The rich play darts. The rich enjoy ping-pong. The rich can enjoy a game of H-O-R-S-E, right?

I went go-karting with Casey Mears yesterday at California Speedway as part of a media event, and that was a blast. Perhaps the "J.P. Hoornstra Charity Go-Karting Classic" is in order?
