Judge Grants Gang Injunction
San Bernardino, CA - This morning, San Bernardino County Superior Court Judge Donald Alvarez granted the San Bernardino County District Attorney's request for a preliminary injunction against the Colton City Crips criminal street gang. The court found "by clear and convincing evidence" that the gang was the cause of a public nuisance afflicting Arbor Terrace Apartments in Colton.
The preliminary injunction will provide immediate relief to the residents of Arbor Terrace, and to the businesses and residents in the surrounding area. Once served with the
order, non-resident gang members will be forbidden from visiting Arbor Terrace Apartment complex, and from loitering together in the immediate, surrounding area.
The purpose of a preliminary injunction is to provide temporary relief during the pendency of a lawsuit. As the lawsuit against Colton City Crips proceeds, the District Attorney will seek to replace the preliminary injunction with a permanent one. The District Attorney's Office believes that the strong evidence gathered by the Colton Police
over the years will be the catalyst for this permanent relief.
Already, residents of Arbor Terrace have seen a decline in illegal drug sales and other gang crimes because of the District Attorney's action in partnership with Colton Police Department.
District Attorney Michael A. Ramos stated, "We are pleased that Judge Alvarez concurs with our assertions that the Colton City Crips are responsible for much of the crime that has occurred in and around Arbor Terrace Apartments. We hope to continue working with Chief Bob Miller and the Colton Police Department to rid the City of these 'local
terrorists.'"
