Hearing set for man charged in fatal shooting of ex-girlfriend in Rialto
Carlos Silva Bernal is scheduled to appear in court Thursday for a preliminary hearing in the shooting death of his ex-girlfriend, 22-year-old Stephanie Ann Lenczyk, in January 2007.
The hearing for Bernal, 26, will be heard in Fontana Superior Court, according to court records.
At a preliminary hearing, prosecutors present some of the evidence and testimony in support of the charges. The judge will then decide whether sufficient evidence exists to hold over the defendant for trial.

Witnesses reported to Rialto Police that Lenczyk, of Yucaipa, was visiting a friend on Jan. 31, 2007 in the 500 block of West Cornell Drive when Bernal called her. He later showed up at the residence, and when Lenczyk began walking toward him, Bernal pulled out a handgun and shot her twice, according to police.
Lenczyk fell to the ground, and Bernal left. Shot in the chest and abdomen, the victim later died at Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton.
Police described Bernal as a documented gang member from Chula Vista. And while police painted Lenczyk as a gang associate, who was hanging out with a rival gang after breaking up with Bernal, her family disagreed.
Lenczyk's mother previously told The Sun that she believed her daughter's death stemmed from domestic problems with the defendant: Lenczyk had broken up with Bernal and he couldn't handle it, she said.
Bernal faces charges of murder and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Carlos Bernal was and still is the best friend I have ever had in this fucked up world and I find it very hard to believe that he could have done this! He had a different girlfriend almost everytime I saw him. He would never be upset with any of them if they decided the relationship was over. In fact 98% of the time he would break up with them! And the 2% that did decide it was over, he just rolled it off his back like it was nothing. It was amazing even to me how much he didn't care if they left him and believe me I've witnessed at least 3 times where this has happened. He would never physically hurt a woman! "Never!" It would have been beneath him to do so. He was a great man and a great friend! Personally I feel very sorry for the lose that Stephanie's mother has endured. I believe I even met Stephanie once. She seemed like a very nice girl and she even played with my daughter. I really can't be to sure tho like I said before Carlos had a different girl every week and that is no joke. The world may take one look at his picture and say that he's just another gang member but that is far from the truth. He never really chose to be a gangster, he had no choice coming from this city in which we live... I would have given my life for this man!
