Operation Phoenix center manager appeared in court today

Former Operation Phoenix Center Manager Michael Miller made an appearance today for a status hearing on his alleged molestation case in San Bernardino Superior Court.

Miller is scheduled to return to court Nov. 4 for a pre-preliminary hearing and Nov. 6 for a preliminary hearing. Miller's lawyer, Deputy Public Defender Sam Knudsen could not confirm whether the preliminary hearing would actually take place on that date.

At a preliminary hearing, prosecutors present some of the evidence and testimony in support of the charges against the defendant. A judge then determines whether there is sufficient evidence to hold over the defendant for trial.

Operation Phoenix is the crime prevention program of Mayor Pat Morris.

Miller faces 23 counts of child molestation and one count of possession of child pornography, according to Superior Court records.

Former staffers at the Rudy G. Hernandez Community Center also alleged Miller snapped dozens of photos as a women bared body parts and posed while he, another parks employee and another woman looked on in mid-2007, according to earlier reports.

San Bernardino Police reportedly confiscated the photos after they arrested Miller on July 3.
