A preliminary gang injunction barring more than 50 members of the Colton City Crips from gathering together at the Arbor Terrace apartments was approved in San Bernardino Superior Court this morning.
Judge Donald Alvarez signed the injunction, which will provide "immediate relief" to residents who live in the 128-unit complex at 2170 N. Rancho Ave. nicknamed "The Zoo." A hearing to make the injunction permanent was not scheduled today.
In the lawsuit filed by the District Attorney's Office, Colton City Crip gang members are "banished" from the safety zone, which encompasses Arbor Terrace and stretches out to Rancho Avenue and Mill Street.
Most gang members do not live in the apartment complex but hang out there during the day, selling drugs, authorities have said.
One of the more prominent members, Lawrence White, retained two attorneys Tuesday who argued that White was never served with the injunction. Authorities acknowledged that White was not physically served because they didn't know where he lived, but said he was aware of the injunction because sections have been posted on his Myspace page.
A judge allowed him to be temporarily withdrawn from the injunction until his attorneys read the case file.
White, whose moniker is "40 Glocc," has gained notoriety through his rap music. He is signed to 50 Cent's G-Unit records.
Police said today that crime has severely dropped in the safety zone area.
