Statement from owner of Rebel the dog who died in vehicle theft

Here's the complete statement from Mary Michael, owner of Rebel the dog. Rebel died when car thieves stole Michael's Ford Excursion, with Rebel inside, and then left her inside the vehicle with the windows rolled up. Michael read the statement during a short press conference Tuesday, the same day one of three suspects in the case was being arraigned, outside Riverside Superior Court.

To get up to speed on the story, read our blog posting here and the story from today's Sun newspaper here.

Michael's statement:

"First, we would like to thank you all for coming today. And we would also like to say a big thank you to all the Riverside Sheriff's Officers of Perris, Hemet, Norco and the Corona Police Department.

A very special thank you must go to Corporal Porrazzo in the Perris department. Without the cooperation of these agencies, these career criminals would not be in custody where they need to be. And we must also thank you, the media, for raising awareness of this terrible crime.

And also to thank the many, many strangers sending cards and messages of sympathy and offers of help, it has really meant a lot to know that so many people care so much what happened to Rebel. If they knew her, they would know just how very special she was.

We are here today to speak on behalf of Rebel, it won't bring her back or lessen the pain she suffered and pain we are now feeling.

We are hoping that Verizon and other cell phone companies will work with us together to change their policies so that our own personal cell phones can be tracked in times of emergencies. If this had been done, Rebel would not have had to suffer and we would not be going through the pain of losing her in this terrible way.

We are hoping that these cowardly and heartless people will get the maximum penalty allowed by the law, and that Rebel will get justice for all that she needlessly went through."
