Trial gets underway for two men in death of Jerry Ramirez
A trial for two men charged in the beating and death of 22-year-old Jerry Ramirez is underway in San Bernardino Superior Court.
The trial for Edward Hernandez, 50, and his 28-year-old son, Edward Vincent Hernandez, was re-assigned to Dept. S12 under Judge Brian McCarville during court proceedings Tuesday, according to Superior Court records. The trial is estimated to last 15 days.
A panel of prospective jurors was scheduled to the court room for Thursday, records state. No information was immediately available about when opening statements might occur.
This is the second trial for Edward Hernandez who was acquitted of a conspiracy charge, while jurors deadlocked on a murder charge, against him on July 25. This will be the first trial on the charges for the younger Hernandez.
Prosecutors believe the pair of defendants and two other relatives, who have since been convicted, are responsible for Ramirez' death. Ramirez was in a relationship with Edward Hernandez' now 18-year-old niece Tina Lopez.
Ramirez was taken to a carport at an East Pumalo Street residence, in San Bernardino, and beaten multiple times with a shovel about mid-day on Nov. 18, 2005, according to prosecutors.
The victim's body was found two days later dumped in Waterman Canyon with several gunshot wounds to the head.
