Alleged accessory to Pomona barbershop murder sentenced to 5 years in prison
A man charged as an accessory to a July murder at a barbershop was sentenced to 5 years in state prison today for violating his probation from a 2003 conviction.
Prosecutors accused Rasheed Ali, 25, of planning to dispose of the weapon allegedly used by his brother to shoot and kill Ontario barber Larry Trevon Hammett.
Hammett was killed in the course of a robbery on July 27 at Groom Time All Star Barbers in Pomona.
On Aug. 5, Ali and his mother went to a Pomona jail to visit Ali's brother, Omari Ali, who was in custody awaiting trial for murder.
During the visit, Rasheed Ali assured his brother that he would dispose of the alleged murder weapon, prosecutors said.
He was taken into custody by police that day, and on Aug. 29 was ordered by a judge to stand trial on the charges.
The judge's Aug. 29 order constituted a violation of the terms of Ali's probation from a 2003 conviction for transporting narcotics for sale.
Ali was assigned to 5 years of probation for the conviction, and was told in 2003 he would be sent to prison for 5 years if he violated probation.
Judge Daniel Buckley sentenced Ali to 5 years in prison today.
After the sentencing, Deputy District Attorney Vanessa Robles-Avnaim agreed to dismiss the accessory charge.
Ali was credited for 177 days in custody, ordered to pay about $300 in fines, and was told by the judge he must submit a DNA sample.
Omari Ali and two other people charged with murder in connection to the July shooting are next scheduled to appear in court Nov. 17.
