Deliberations continue Monday in San Bernardino shovel beating
Jurors in the criminal trial for a man and his son charged with the beating and deadly shooting of 22-year-old Jerry Ramirez are scheduled to continue deliberations Monday in San Bernardino Superior Court.
Lawyers in the trial for Edward Hernandez and his son, Edward Vincent Hernandez, gave their closing arguments on Tuesday, and the court presented the case to the jury for deliberation. Jurors have deliberated already for three days.
Edward Hernandez, 50, and 28-year-old Edward Vincent Hernandez face murder charges in the death of Ramirez, whose body was found by authorities dumped in Waterman Canyon with several gunshot wounds to the head on Nov. 20, 2005.
Prosecutors allege Ramirez was beaten multiple times with a shovel in a carport at an East Pumalo Street residence about noon on Nov. 18, 2005. Witnesses reported hearing and seeing the beating to San Bernardino Police.
Still alive after the beating, Ramirez was rolled up in blankets, put into the trunk of a car and taken from the home, according to earlier court testimony.
In addition to one count of murder, Edward Vincent Hernandez also faces a count of conspiracy. The father, Edward Hernandez, was acquitted of the conspiracy charge in a trial in July. Jurors had deadlocked on the murder count.
Co-defendants Benjamin Hernandez, 52, and Alfred Ray Rodriguez, 21, were sentenced in August after being convicted by a jury for the roles in the murder of Ramirez.
Benjamin Hernandez, the brother of Edward Hernandez, was sentenced to 16 years to life in state prison, while Rodriguez got 15 years to life, according to Superior Court records.
