Sentencing tomorrow in fraudulent Colton signature-gathering case

A man who fraudulently collected signatures for a Colton voter initiative faces is scheduled to appear for sentencing Thursday in San Bernardino Superior Court.

Joon Il Kim, 30, pleaded no contest last month to charges of filing a false affidavit. He is expected to be sentenced to three months in jail.

Kim, a former Los Angeles resident, was alleged to have forged more than 300 signatures on a Colton petition that sought to limit locations for metal-shredding facilities, according to the District Attorney's Office.

The defendant was originally charged with 19 counts of perjury when he was arrested in February in Maryland. He was extradited to San Bernardino County to face the charges.

Kim, who lives in Maryland, will not have to serve the time until June so he can get his personal life in order, prosecutors said.

During the investigation, the county Registrar of Voters determined 63 percent of the voter signatures were invalid, including 352 signatures that did not match the voters' signatures on file. The petition did not qualify for a ballot.
