Opening statements begin today in a 16-year-old case of a husband accused of stabbing his wife to death in their Sugarloaf home.

On Aug. 10, 1992, Gustavo Perez called 9-1-1 and said he'd just came home and found his 26-year-old wife, Gina Perez, dead in the bathtub. She had been stabbed to death.

It took San Bernardino County sheriff's investigators 14 years to arrest Perez, which they did in 2006.

No motive has been offered in the killing.

The cold case was reopened in 2006 and investigators served a search warrant on the Sugarloaf home although Perez no longer lived there. Deputies combed the house and yard with a metal detector looking for evidence.

Gina Perez's mother, Patricia Sepulveda, said she always suspected her daughter's husband in the slaying.

The statements start at 1:30 p.m. today in Barstow Superior Court.
