Opening remarks and testimony began Monday in the trial for two men suspected in the car-to-car shooting death of 19-year-old Heather Marie Montoya on Citrus Avenue in August 2006.

Prosecutor Simon Umschied and defense lawyers Dan Mangan, who represents Sergio Moreno, and Daniel Faulhaber, who represents Salvador Gonzalez, presented their opening remarks to the jury Monday in Fontana Superior Court.

Witness testimony began afterward, according to court records.

Both men are charged in the deadly shooting of Heather Marie Montoya and the wounding of then 18-year-old Paul Martinez as the pair traveled in an Acura Integra south on Citrus Avenue, in Fontana.

The defendants and a woman, Jacque Louisa Long, who has taken a plea bargain in the case, are suspected of pulling up alongside the Integra in an allegedly stolen Chevrolet Malibu and fired shots into the Integra about 5:57 a.m., according to police.

Fontana Police said, at the time of the shooting, that the suspects appeared to target Martinez and were aquainted with the boyfriend of the female victim. Montoya was pronounced dead at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana.

Long, 27, pleaded guilty to one count of manslaughter under the terms of a plea bargain during court proceedings in January 2007.
