Harville found guilty of murder in 2006 crash in San Bernardino
A jury found Kevin Harville guilty Friday in connection with a crash while chasing an ex-girlfriend on a local freeway, killing another motorist with his vehicle's battery in October 2006.
Harville's Ford Explorer rolled over several times on the southbound 215 Freeway, pitching its battery into opposing traffic where it struck and killed motorist 30-year-old Shawn Billings Kettlewell.
After one day's deliberation, the jury found Harville guilty of second-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon, according to San Bernardino Superior Court personnel.
Jurors also found true related special allegations. Harville was found not guilty of a fourth count of criminal threats.
He is set to be sentenced Jan. 9 in San Bernardino Superior Court. Lawyers in the case could not be reached for comment Friday afternoon.
Highway Patrol officers say Harville, 37, pulled alongside a Ford Expedition driven by his ex-girlfriend at Base Line and H streets, in San Bernardino. He yelled at the woman.
The two vehicles bumped multiple times as they got on the southbound 215 Freeway and continued south, witnesses told officers.
In his own court testimony, Harville said his ex-girlfriend Rolanda Hill's Expedition had struck his vehicle while he was parked on H Street and talked on a cell phone. He simply was trying to get his ex-girlfriend Rolanda Hill to pull over so they could talk about the collision, Harville testified.
However, Harville lost control, struck a guardrail near Mill Street and rolled over. The Explorer's battery slammed through the windshield of a northbound truck driven by Kettlewell.
The defendant claimed he lost control when a tire blew out on his Explorer on the freeway, he testified.
