Two miniature horses killed in freeway accident

Two miniature horses died Saturday after they apparently fell out of a vehicle at the interchange of the 15 and 10 freeways.

Witnesses told authorities that the driver of the vehicle fled the scene, leaving investigators with few clues into the cause of the incident.

"I would like to know exactly what they were doing, and why they didn't want to take responsibility for their animals," said Beth Les, investigator for the Inland Valley Humane Society.

"And if they have other animals on their property, we'd want to see them," she added.

At about 8:30 p.m. Saturday, the California Highway Patrol received a call about two miniature horses loose on the overpass connecting the southbound 15 to the eastbound 10.

One of the horses was struck by a car and killed. The other suffered a broken shoulder bone and was euthanized, Les said.

Investigators suspect the vehicle carrying the horses may have lacked safety features needed to legally transport animals.

"No one is quite sure," Les said. "We don't have a lot of eye-witnesses."

People with information on the incident are urged to contact Les at (909) 623-9777, ext. 695.

Les said tipsters can remain anonymous.
