RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- A 23-year-old Ontario man who was accused of trying to run over two police officers will be sent to state prison after accepting a plea deal from prosecutors on Friday.

Steven Michael Martin, 23, was arrested on attempted murder charges in January after a high-speed chase in Ontario.

At a Euclid Avenue onramp to the 60 Freeway, Martin tried run over two police officers who had pulled him over for a traffic violation, police said at the time of his arrest.

The officers opened fire, striking Martin once in the upper body. Despite the wound, Martin managed to drive on to the eastbound 60.

He was arrested on Grove Avenue after he exited the freeway and crashed his car.

On Friday at West Valley Superior Court, Martin agreed to plead guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and resisting a police officer, said Deputy District Attorney Mike Dowd.

Martin was sentenced to three years in state prison, but he will only serve an additional 7 to 8 months because he has been jailed since January, Dowd said.

Additional charges filed against Martin, including two counts of attempted murder, were dismissed as part of the plea agreement, Dowd said.
