Man gets 2 years for fatal Pomona hit-and-run
A 25-year-old man accused of killing a 19-year-old Ontario woman in an August hit-and-run accident will be sentenced to two years in prison after pleading no contest to criminal charges.
Jose Mariscal pleaded no contest Wednesday in Pomona Superior Court to one count of felony hit-and-run and one count of misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter, said Deputy District Attorney Stefan Mrakich, the prosecutor.
Liliana Martinez was struck by Mariscal's car about 11 p.m. Aug. 15 as she crossed an unmarked area of Temple Avenue near Scoreboards sports bar in Pomona, prosecutors said. Mariscal did not stop after he hit the woman.
Martinez died from her injuries on Aug. 27.
Mariscal agreed to a two-year prison sentence as part of a plea offer from prosecutors. Prosecutors agreed to drop a misdemeanor charge against Mariscal for driving without a valid driver's license.
At a preliminary hearing in October, a judge reduced the manslaughter charge against Mariscal to a misdemeanor. Prosecutors had filed the charge as a felony.
Mariscal is set to be sentenced on Feb. 5. He will likely be deported to Mexico after he serves his prison term, Mrakich said.
