Three deny murder charges in Pomona Motel 6 killing
Three Pomona residents pleaded not guilty today to murder and other charges filed following a fatal shooting in February at a Garey Avenue motel.
Albert Martinez, 24, Florencio Reyes, 17, and Cesar Sierra, 31, each pleaded not guilty in Pomona Superior Court to three counts -- murder, attempted murder and robbery.
Prosecutors accuse the group of ambushing Nelssa Tovar and Jorge Sandoval on Feb. 28 at a Motel 6 on Garey Avenue immediately north of the 60 Freeway.
Martinez and Reyes opened fire on Tovar and Sandoval with handguns, and Tovar, 31, of Montclair was shot once in the upper body. She died from the injury.
In addition to counts of murder, attempted murder and robbery, the defendants face allegations that they committed the crime to benefit a street gang.
A preliminary hearing for the defendants was set today for July 21.
Martinez and Sierra remain jailed without the possibility of bail at the Pitchess Detention Center in Castaic.
Information on whether Reyes remains in custody is unavailable because he is a minor.
