Motive for former cop's bank robberies? Unknown to this reporter

FrankHolder.jpgI got a voicemail message from a reader this morning who wondered why the motive for Frank Holder's bank robberies wasn't addressed in this morning's story on his guilty pleas.

The short answer to that question is I don't know Holder's motive.

The federal prosecutor who handled the former Pomona police sergeant's case declined to comment on Holder's motive yesterday, and a woman in the federal public defender's office -- which provided Holder's defense -- told me that the office doesn't comment to the press.

I couldn't find a phone number for Holder yesterday so I couldn't reach him to ask him his motive.

Holder waived his Miranda rights and granted an interview with an FBI agent when he was arrested in October. Holder admitted robbing four Southern California banks, but it's not stated in the agent's complaint whether Holder told the agent what his motive was.

Holder's motive is the most interesting unanswered question about the case, and I think it might be addressed by attorneys during Holder's sentencing hearing -- now scheduled for Nov. 30.
