Prosecution remains suspended in Montclair slayings

The prosecution against a Montclair man accused of murdering his parents remains suspended because of questions surrounding his mental competence, a prosecutor said this morning.

Adrian Marvin Bonadie, 33, remains hospitalized at Patton State Hospital in San Bernardino, where doctors are administering drugs to treat Bonadie's mental illness, said Deputy District Attorney Karen Schmauss.

Bonadie is accused of shooting and killing his parents -- Earl Bonadie, 63, and Angela Bonadie, 62 -- on Feb. 6 in the family's home in the 4800 block of Moreno Street.

Bonadie's sister told police following the killings that her brother was schizophrenic, and his behavior had become increasingly unusual. Bonadie reportedly believed his family was practicing witchcraft.

This morning in West Valley Superior Court, a judge reviewed medical reports completed by doctors at Patton following Bonadie's arrival there last month.

A progress report in Bonadie's case was set for Feb. 16, 2010, though criminal proceedings could be reinstated prior to that if doctors at Patton rule Bonadie is competent to stand trial, Schmauss said.
