Court hearing postponed in Chino shootout case

RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- A preliminary hearing was postponed this afternoon for two alleged robbers charged with murder for engaging in a shootout with Chino police that ended in the death of a bystander.

The hearing, at which numerous witnesses were set to testify, was postponed because one of the alleged robbers -- Edward Ramon Cisneros -- was dissatisfied with his defense attorney.

Cisneros successfully lobbied today to have the attorney removed from the case, and a public defender was appointed to represent him.

Cisneros and Joel Anthony Jaquez, both 28, are next due to appear in West Valley Superior Court on Dec. 9.

They are charged with murder and numerous other felonies for the Feb. 1 incident, which began when the men attempted to rob a Papa John's restaurant on Central Avenue in Chino.

When police arrived in the midst of the robbery, Cisneros and Jaquez exchanged gunfire with authorities before they were arrested. Both men were shot numerous times, and a Chino police officer was also shot.
