Man gets one year in jail for arranging sex with girl, 13
RANCHO CUCAMONGA -- A San Diego man accused of arranging to meet an underage girl for sex in Ontario will spend a year in jail after accepting a plea bargain from prosecutors.
Hsiang Jen Pan, 20, pleaded guilty to a felony count of assault with a deadly weapon on Thursday in West Valley Superior Court, said Deputy District Attorney Jason Anderson.
In addition to his jail term -- which he will begin when he is sentenced Dec. 14 -- Pan will be required to register as a sex offender for the duration of his five-year probation period, Anderson said.
Pan was initially charged with two felony sex crimes following his Dec. 29, 2008 arrest at LA/Ontario International Airport. He was accused of arranging to meet a 13-year-old Oregon girl there who he met on the social networking Web site MySpace.com.
The girl's parents notified Ontario police of Pan's contact, and police met him at the airport, where he arrived expecting to meet the girl for a sexual encounter.

Man arrested Tuesday on suspicion of lewd acts

ONTARIO - A 20-year-old San Diego man was arrested Tuesday after authorities found out he planned to engage in sexual activity with an underaged girl from Oregon.
Hsiang Jen Pan allegedly bought the 13-year-old girl a plane ticket and arranged to pick her up at L.A./Ontario International Airport before going to a nearby hotel, authorities said.
Pan was arrested at the airport on suspicion of lewd acts involving children and booked at West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.
On Tuesday, detectives with the Washington County, Ore., Sheriff's Department talked with the girl's mother who had recently learned her daughter had received an airline ticket from an unknown man, according to a San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department news release.
"The mother acted appropriately," sheriff's spokeswoman Arden Wiltshire said. "As soon as she found out, she alerted authorities."
After an investigation, detectives discovered Pan and the girl had become friends through the popular social-networking Web site MySpace.
Pan convinced the girl to come to Southern California where he planned to rent a hotel room and have sex with her, according to the news release.
Oregon sheriff's detectives asked the San Bernardino County sheriff's Crimes Against Children Detail to help.
Members of the Crimes Against Children Detail, the Specialized Enforcement Team and the Los Angeles Airport Police surveyed the Ontario airport and took Pan into custody when he arrived to meet the girl.
Wiltshire said there are a few things parents can do to reduce the chances of this happening to their own children.
"The strongest thing we recommend is that the child's computer not be in a private place, such a a bedroom," she said. "We recommend that computers be in a family-oriented place where they can be supervised."
She also suggested parents put a time limit on children's computer use, monitor who they talk to online and set up parental controls.
"Be involved with your children and their activities," Arden said.
