FONTANA - A man who allegedly yelled a racist remark before trying to kill a pedestrian pleaded not guilty Tuesday in Fontana Superior Court.

Brian Keith Stowers, 39, of Fontana was charged with attempted murder, possession of marijuana for sale and a felony weapons charge.

He is suspected of stabbing a 37-year-old Fontana man about 2 a.m. Jan. 10 near Club Azteca, 17845 Foothill Blvd.

As the man walked down Laurel Avenue, south of Foothill, a car pulled up next to him, Fontana police Sgt. Jeff Decker said.

"The subject exited, made a racial remark and stabbed the victim three times," Decker said. "The subject then got back into his vehicle and fled on Foothill."

Police followed up on witness statements and suspect descriptions. They requested a search warrant for Stowers' residence in the 17800 block of Vine Street, which was about a quarter mile from the site.

Officers served the warrant and found marijuana as well as other evidence inside the home, Decker said.

Stowers was booked Jan. 13 at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga.

He is scheduled to appear back in court on Jan. 28.
