A hui hou, Dave

The dog isn't fluent in Hawaiian, but has attempted to say "until we meet again" to former Arroyo Valley swimming and water polo coach Dave Schiffner.

"He's in paradise," Arroyo Valley athletic director Matt Howell said. "He moved to Hawaii. I told him that if he gets tired of it over there, I'll take his place."

Schiffner's wife, Amy, might object to that. Amy is now a professor of dance at the University of Hawaii, which is close to the Schiffner's new abode in Oahu, about three miles from the Pacific Ocean.

After last school year the Schiffners sold their Redlands home at a tidy profit and made the move, Howell said. Dave doesn't have a job yet, but Howell doesn't anticipate that being a problem, noting the former Hawk coach has saved his money wisely and is well-qualified for either a college or high school job in the islands.

Asked if all this information was OK for publication, Howell said "Oh, yeah. I mean, who cares, he's in Hawaii." The dog pound wishes the Schiffners pomaika'i (luck).
