First cabin

Yucaipa baseball star Matt Davidson came home from Venezuela a winner. The slugging junior earned a gold medal Saturday for helping the U.S. win the World Youth Baseball Championships in Barquisemeto, Venezuela.

Team USA defeated Brazil 8-2 to earn the large first-place trophy, plus gold medals for all team members.
Davidson had one official at-bat in the game and lined out. However, he played in every game during the tourney and went 3-for-5 in a key semifinal victory against Cuba.

Glen Davidson, Matt's father, attended the event and relayed some details.

"The boys won this trophy that was about four feet high," he said. "It was like the Stanley Cup. On the flight back the boys rode in coach and they put the trophy in first class."

No word on whether the trophy demanded Grey Poupon.

As for Matt, Glen said he had fun bartering in the dormitory with players from other countries, including swapping a pair of sunglasses for an aluminum bat with Japanese writing. Meantime, the Team USA coaches evidently did a little bartering of their own.

"I think one of them came home with about 12 Cuban cigars," Glen said.
