Phelan good

Phelan's Jean Golla, the mother of Serrano grad and Bakersfield High coach Paul Golla, called the Prep-dog on Thursday morning. Jean wanted to know about Sun reports on Paul's exploits. So I had to get Jean hip to the dog, the place to look for updates on her son and the Drillers.

The Drillers (4-0) weren't overwhelming last week in a 23-13 win over Clovis Buchanan, but still moved to a No. 10 calhisports.com state ranking. This week Bakersfield meets crosstown rival Centennial, and the Gollas - Jean and Gunter - will be there.

"The team is doing great and Paul has been working so hard," Jean said.

"We're going to drive up (Highway) 58 tomorrow. Fortunately, our Nissan gets about 30 mpg. It's a pretty long drive."
