Tiger tale

While the dog can claim to have coached 49ers backup QB Trent Dilfer (youth basketball), I agree Rim cross country coach Stephen Cook has me trumped in the name-dropping department.

As an assistant golf coach at Anaheim Western High School, Cook had a promising young player on his team named Tiger Woods.

"He was an excellent student of the game and he worked hard," Cook said. "Even when it would rain, he would watch video of golf. He worked at it seven days a week."

Cook said he had Tiger on the team for three years until Cook took a job in Idaho.

Now the 47-year-old former Humboldt State baseball player is guiding the Fighting Scot runners, and doing some running himself.

"Nobody wanted to coach the cross country team, so I knew it was either go into administration or keep coaching," Cook said. "I chose cross country and it's saved my life. Whatever the kids run, I run. I'm not very fast, but I go with them."
