Vista Murrieta, Yucaipa crack state's Top 20

| | Comments (0)

Vista Murrieta is second and Yucaipa 19th in the calhisports.com state baseball rankings.

Long Beach Wilson claimed the top spot and San Mateo Serra checks in at No. 3.

Defending CIF-SS D2 champ Vista Murrieta returns all-state underclassman shortstop Derek Legg, along with ace pitcher Brian Valenzuela (10-1, 1.23) and two more standout pitchers in Tyler Simmons and Taylor Garrison.

Aptos, loaded with players off the Little League team that won the West Region in San Bernardino several years ago, is 12th. Kevin Eichhorn and Kyle Anderson lead the Mariners.

Yucaipa is paced by Matt Davidson, the calhisports.com state Freshman of the Year and Sun Player of the Year as a ninth grader (before he was even on the Yucaipa campus). Davidson had a 9-2 record and 1.20 earned run average along with six home runs for the Thunderbirds last season. Future NCAA DI pitchers Scott Snodgress (Stanford) and Adam Miller (BYU) round out a solid staff.

Look for Los Gatos, off to a quick start, to easily crack next week's list - though that will be up to calhisports.
