Yucaipa looking into championship rings

As soon as I posted a follow-up on the CIF-Masters swimming, the cell phone rang and it was Yucaipa athletic director Mark Anderson.

I asked Anderson if the Yucaipa swimmers are going to get CIF-SS championship rings. He said somebody was on it, researching the deal.

Anderson was the district athletic director in Odessa, Texas for the district that includes the famous Permian High School of Friday Night Lights' fame. I asked him how they handle championship rings in the Lone Star State and he said they have some strict rules on that due to the "shenanigans" that sometimes occur. I told him Cali has those same kinds of rules.

Anderson also said every kid in Texas who earns a letter gets a letterman's jacket for $60 and the school picks up the tab. Not bad.

"This is all new territory for me," Anderson said of the Thunderbirds winning CIF. "I'm going to have to call (former Yucaipa athletic director) Jim Taylor and see what they regulations are. We want to do everything above board."
