A second look - Week 1

| | Comments (0)

It was a riveting Week 1 of prep football, so let's take a second glance at some of the key matchups that went down and the results:

Hesperia 34, San Gorgonio 17
A nice debut for the Scorpions, who should battle Serrano for the Mojave River League title again.

Granite Hills 42, Rubidoux 0
A laugher such as this has been unknown in Cougars' history ... dandy start for new coach Justin Price's boys.

Kaiser 42, Apple Valley 3
Looks like the Cats are geared-up for Dick Bruich's farewell season. Kudos to Apple Valley for ambitious scheduling.

Barstow 21, Rialto 0
The Aztecs (2-0) are rolling behind first-year coach Jose Rubio. Impressive for a school that doesn't normally start well.

Chino 43, Pacific 6
Kenneth Chapple is a standout for the Pirates, but they will be undermanned all season. New coach Oscar Torres has his heart in the right place must figure a way to get more potential student-athletes eligible.

Clovis East 21, Redlands 13
Redlands' Dodge Stadium is impressive, but is must have paled in comparision to the site of Clovis East's previous game - Texas Stadium, where the Timberwolves lost to Heritage of Texas.

Banning 44, Fontana 20
As it did last season, the Broncos have some playmakers. And Fohi made too many mistakes to win.

San Bernardino 26, Jurupa Valley 13
The only thing easy to predict about the Cardinals (1-1) is that running back/special teams threat Aarein Booker is a threat every time he touches the ball.

Bloomington 14, Ontario 7
There will be some growing pains for the Bruins as they adjust to new coach Tom Conner and try to gain some traction during the non-league season.

Rancho Cucamonga 30, Canyon Springs 0
A strong offensive line and running back Seteki Finau boost hopes for the quick-starting Cougars (2-0).

Los Osos 20, Cajon 7
Judging by the BYU game, UCLA could use Los Osos recruit Richard Brehaut right now. Meantime, this game will make the Cowboys stronger when it counts.

Redlands East Valley 24, North 16
The Wildcats always seem to win the close games under coach Kurt Bruich.

Riverside Notre Dame 16, Twentynine Palms 14
As with Cajon, a tough game early for the Wildcats will only make them stronger for the league season.

Ontario Christian 20, Bishop Union 10
The Knights saw plenty of Highway 395 and more than enough of the end zone.

Victor Valley 12, Eastside 12
The Jackrabbits - winless in 21 consecutive outings - took this tie hard. That's a good sign for a team with high hopes.

Vista Murrieta 15, Colton 14
No stunner here. Vista Murrieta has won 22 consecutive regular-season games and Colton is young. The Yellowjackets are still SAL favorites.
